Comparison of Moog Little Phatty and Moog Subsequent 37.
I tried to balance the sound levels as much as possible.
Subsequent technically has a lot of advantages over Little Phatty, but I don't know if we can say the same for sound.
I would not say that it is a very entertaining video, but I believe it will help (or be more confused) to those who want to make a choice.
Enjoy watching

UPDATE: It's impossible to make FM sounds like Little Phatty. Subsequent's LFO's are digital so it can never handle modulation like Little Phatty. If you guys have Phatty keep it!

How is it sub37 digital vs lp which is analog i know that there’s no tubes in any moogs right it’s all transistors

Cannot begin to emphasize how much more of a "moog" the LP is vs the sub37. The Sub37 bored me to death. LP is pure energy and amazing sound. Simplistic sure but extremely rewarding.

I don’t know why they changed the architecture. May be they need to make components smaller to fit too many functions.

For me, the biggest difference is how they fit in a mix. The Sub37 is great on its own, or in some pure synth music. I found it hard to fit in a full mix of music. Too dominant. But the Slim/Little Phatty fits happily in any mix, whether synth music, a band, or whatever. It’s my keeper. In sold the 37.

What I'd jump at is a Little Phatty, but with more knobs like the Subsequent instead of the more button based layout. Something about more individual things to touch and play with just seems satisfying to my caveman brain.

The subsiquent models both SUCK. Plus, patching them is a pain in the ass. And if you’re messing around with hidden parameters you have to be real careful. It’s easy to get yourself stuck in a parameter that you can’t get out of, unless you recalibrate from start to finish manually And even then you also run the risk of locking up the entire unit due to your internet connection cutting out unexpectedly. I had this very thing happen to me. There’s not even a hard restart button

Fascinating comparison of the oscillators and filters. The modulation comparison is a bit skewed because you have some pre and post envelope distortion dialled in on the Sub 37. Inevitably that will make things grittier. Maybe using the external CV input for pitch in would be a better comparison? I've not tried feeding one of the SUB 37 oscillators back into that input but in theory that would allow FM without using an external oscillator.

Little Phatty and Slim Phatty are the best sounding non vintage Moogs. Shame the lack of knobs and capabilities but the sound is amazing. All mothern moogs sound gritty and saturated why is that? maybe because it´s not Bob Moog around anymore ..

I can tell you the subsiquent series is HIGHLY overrated. And I mean highly overrated. Just watch videos on here abs notice how damn near every one of them is using their SUB 25 or 37 as a MIDI controller more than anything This tells me that they’re getting their sounds from plugins and not the unit itself, and is a testament of the quality of those two models

Grandmother and matriarch sounds better IMO, more vintage and classic moog sound. But I cant replace my sub 37 with anything, even if I know also own a Matriarch. Different synths, different utilities and character.

Hi, I’m looking to get my first moog. I’m on the fence between LP, Sub25, and Boog D. Could you give any advice? Thank you. This is a great comparison

I didn't use Boog D. I can't say buy this or that. It's about what you want and your budget. Only thing that i can say is 25 keys synth is not my type. I really love to play the keys.

Sub 25 has more than double the midi CC's than LP. Boog has 0. I've got a Sub 25, Sub Phatty, Boog and Minitaur. I love them all. Boog is great, but not being able to save patches is a real bummer.

@@alexwestconsulting. How different are the sub 25 and sub phatty … ?!
@alexwestconsulting
@alexwestconsulting 4 месяца назад
@@kierenmoore3236 first (but not least) little phatty is bob’s last creation. Not to be overlooked. The line after that is all based on bob’s last model. That feels special having that in your hands. It sings and is warm. Sub phatty is undervalued these days, has a raw, gritty sound relatively. Boog is not as sweet as any real Moog, but so close, sounds more 70’s like a mini Moog than sub can get, closer to lp’s sound, but lp somehow doesn’t sound as 70’s. boog is a no-brainer to buy, sub phatty goes for twice as much used and is undervalued at the moment, lp is more a collector’s item where the Boog sounds close enough to most ears. Little phatty is undervalued because the sub 25 kind of obsoletes it in most people’s minds, but sub 25 sounds basically the same as sub phatty which looks cooler. I got a poly d since I wrote that and while it’s great, the distortion on it is terrible and it’s not as cutting as the Boog on bass. Sub phatty is the best bass machine of that lot. But Minotaur beats it although Minotaur needs distortion down the line since it doesn’t have sub pharty’s integrated drive. So sometimes I actually think that sub phatty is the best bass machine. Although sub 25 is basically the same as sub phatty on that, most people say the drive is better on sub 25, but for me sub phatty has the best drive. If you don’t have any, get a used Boog tomorrow. If there’s a cheap sub phatty, go for that. If you want midi control galore, sub 25.

@@alexwestconsulting Thanks for your opinion/advice! 🙏🏼 I think we have a similar impression of the differences … I like the 70s sound (too end buzz) and that warm singing sound (lp, and maybe voyager top) - very noticeably different to each other. I also really like the Minitaur for extreme bass. I prefer a warm/singing tone, that I can always overdrive externally, if/when I wish. I’m not so into the sound of the Subs, just based on MANY video comparisons - it seems to me they have a tendency towards grittier sounds, whilst lacking some of the heft of older models. I think a Minimoog, LP (or maybe Voyager?) and Minitaur (or Taurus 3, lol) would be my ideal spread of Moog sounds. I’ve been impressed with Boog/Minimoog comparisons … it is 80%++ the way there … the only B closer to the original is tge Pro-1, I think. Cheers! 😎👍🏼

One thing that bums us out is the single LFO only on the LP/SP There's a number of Hands Up/ Eurodance patches we'd like to make on it, that require 2 LFOs to pull off, and at best automating within a DAW could accomplish the end sound... but that kinda defeats the purpose of recreating classic patches on it for immediate use by other people

Yeah, using a MIDI interface and DAW takes away from it all. I fairly recently attempted that route. In fact, I was hoping to convert my entire bass guitar setup to MIDI… big fucking mistake I found the DAW and interface software to be EXTREMELY difficult to understand. I couldn’t even get it to where it was producing nor picking up sound The dude from sweetwater actually gave me a refund on the DAW, which was almost 500 dollars. 3 different technicians tried to get me moving and just couldn’t figure it out themselves The user manual was impossible to understand as well… LOADED with technical jargon that even its description needs deciphering

You can always send cv out to pitch or filter from another synth. I do this with a boog model D into my phatty. I also send noise out to its external audio input. Really opens up the Little Phatty

@@jansonrawlings8169 nice. Thanks for the response:… hahah and that it cracks me up when I see / hear someone refer to Behringer synths as “boog” haha… although, I’ve heard that they’re pretty good units, but to also expect certain thing to go bad on those quicker than the same issue in comparison to a moog… something like that The miniboog has an arpeggiator and they’re polyphonic too, aren’t they?
@jansonrawlings8169
@jansonrawlings8169 6 месяцев назад
@@MyVideos-fm7ug Haha, ya boog is pretty funny. The “Poly D” has an arpeggiator and sequencer and can play 4 note paraphony, but I have the regular monophonic model D which doesn’t have any of those. The Poly D has a keyboard and is full size, whereas the model D is a little module thing. I’ve had an original 1971 minimoog, and the behringer was spot on sound wise. Just feels cheaper. But surprisingly it’s held up for the 5 years I’ve owned it with no issues at all. You can pick one up for around 200 dollars used, so very low risk if you wanna try one out :-)
@MyVideos-fm7ug

@@jansonrawlings8169 get yourself another Poly D, and you’ll have yourself a “double boog-ie”… just like in golf 😆 I don’t know how true this is, but I read something where it’s suspected that there’s some sweatshop child labor involved in the production of each boog. That wouldn’t surprise me, unfortunately And if boog can create a miniboog that’s equipped with both a sequencer and an arpeggiator AND is a 4 voice polyphonic… why can’t moog create such a synth? I love have polyphonic capabilities. It’s such a necessity for me. I do use my cherry audio MIDI plug ins on my phatty, but out of all of the ones I have, I pretty much use what’s called the Elka synth and the analog strings presetting… and it is awesome. The GX-80 plug in is awesome as well. That’s the YAMAHA GX-89 simulator..my only thing with that one is it’s way too reverbish, even with reverb and delay turned off. But my god, there are id to late 70s GX-80s on reverb… STILL NEW AND IN THE BOXES… they go for between 100,000 and 126,000 each!!!!

LP; phatt and smooth oscillators, smooth wave shape transition, smooth filter (as you can see in the analyzer), last synth that Bob designed. S37; more knobs!, sub osc, noise, hardwired feedback, more modulation, but no osc modulation :( , great arpeggiator and sequencer that you can use as mod source, paraphonic oscillators. So Lp has a sweet sweet sound, S37 has many features and a little more aggressive sound.
