This 4K visualization shows the moon's phase and libration at hourly intervals throughout 2017, as viewed from the Northern Hemisphere. Each frame represents one hour. In addition, this visualization shows the moon's orbit position, sub-Earth and subsolar points, distance from the Earth at true scale, and labels of craters near the terminator.
Production music provided by Killer Tracks.

Great stuff! My club does outreach activities all the time demonstrating the phases of the Moon to the public. We are also so excited for the upcoming Solar Eclipse in August!!!

Yo prefiero la de 2017 porque tiene más ritmo. La de 2015 es más nostálgica, pero de todos modos, la de 2015 también me encanta, es muy bella.

Does anyone know why the moon looks upside down in the Southern hemisphere?
@markholm7050
@markholm7050 7 лет назад
Fernando Beneke Maybe this diagram will help. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orbit_of_the_Moon#/media/File%3AEarth-Moon.PNG The basic explanation is that, from far enough south, you will be looking at the Moon from the southern side of its orbit, while from far enough North, you see it from the Northern side of its orbit. In equatorial regions, you see the Moon's orbit more nearly edge on, and it will appear to pass more nearly overhead. This is all complicated by the tilts of Earth's axis of rotation and the Moon's orbit with respect to the plane of Earth's orbit. From far enough south, you will be looking North to see the Moon. From far enough north, you look south to see the Moon. From a northern location, you can simulate the southern view by facing north and bending over backwards till you see the Moon.
@davegillett7135
@davegillett7135 7 лет назад
Fernando Beneke yes its because people in the southern hemisphere are upside down. do a headstand (I nearly said stand on your head) looking at the moon and you will see what people in the northern hemisphere see. that assumes,of course,that you are in the southern hemisphere.

J Day ... Pause the video on that date and look closely. Moon rise would have been about midnight, highest in the sky about 6 am the next day, and setting about midday.

Why does the moon appear to wobble?
@NASAGoddard
@NASAGoddard 6 лет назад
Because the moon orbits the earth on a 5+ degree tilt compared to the Earth's rotation, it appears to wobble as it moves above and below our plane of rotation.

Where's the day time gibbous and night time crescents? Every time the moon is on the dark side of the earth you have the gibbous and the day side has the crescents, but we can see gibbous in the day time and crescents at night also.
@NASAGoddard
@NASAGoddard 7 лет назад
Oh, I see - there's a lot of information in this video. The day/night cycle of Earth is approximately 1 day per second, so those crescents and gibbous phases last for weeks. It's a little confusing, I admit, but we're getting a lot of information into this graphic. Hope this helps.

This is great if you're looking for a funky cartoon. But it just opened dozens more questions than I already had. Why does the moon appear to harmonically rotate counter-clockwise/clockwise, in addition to the synchronous rotation around the earth? At what latitude is the observer seeing this representation? Why can't they make a 3d visualization of the path of the moon, why is it always 2d? Since the moon is only about 1/4 the size of Earth, and in synchronous orbit, at the new moon phase the whole back side of the moon should be lit, however the only way it should disappear completely is if it is between the earth and the sun, thereby causing a solar eclipse each month. However we don't see that, we see the moon usually disappear completely, even though if the solar eclipse didn't happen, meaning the moon is either above our line of sight of the top of the sun, or below, only two possibilities. If it is above that line of sight, we should see some of the bottom side of the moon light up since it is in alignment between the sun and the earth. How come we don't? The moon should be above the north pole or below the south pole in order for us not to see a solar eclipse from somewhere on earth each month. From our perspective on earth part of the moon at the top or bottom should be lit.

annihilationHaven is you my freind need to study and do your homework. This isn't a lecture. Your on this page, you should know atleast the basics. Thus isn't a research paper
@annihilationHaven
@annihilationHaven 7 лет назад
Of course it isn't a research paper. Someone put a lot of time and effort into making this cartoon which has nothing to do with the phases of the moon and nothing to do with reality. It's just sad that they have to put the NASA Goddard tag on it, it can mislead people into believing it's legitimate.
@NASAGoddard
@NASAGoddard 7 лет назад
The moon's orbit is not on the same plane as the Earth's orbit around the sun. It's tilted by 5.15 degrees and that's why we don't see an eclipse every month. The "harmonic" rotation of the moon in this video is called libration - it's a sort of wobble the moon has, like a spinning top.

"And the moon, we have measured for her mansions (to traverse) till she returns like the old, (withered, and curved-up like a sickle) date-palm. It is not permitted for sun to catch-up the moon, nor can the night outstrip the day; each swims along in (its own) orbit." (36:39-40) - Quraan.
