"Fortune Is Unpredictable and Mutable"
Nakajima Atsushi, a starving, homeless orphan, encounters a man floating down the river who appears to be drowning. Atsushi dives in and rescues the man, who comes to consciousness and introduces himself as the suicidal maniac, Osamu Dazai. Dazai's colleague, Doppo Kunikida yells at Dazai from across the river and ends up treating Atsushi to a meal of chazuke in a tea house. Atsushi discovers that Kunikida and Dazai work for the Armed Detective Agency, an organization of individuals possessing supernatural abilities. Dazai and Kunikida explain that they are searching for a tiger that has been ravaging warehouses and livestock. Atsushi states that the tiger had been following him throughout his traveling, and ends up posing as the bait to help the two agents capture it. Dazai slips Kunikida a note and takes Atsushi to a warehouse. Atsushi explains how he was kicked out of the orphanage to save money, because the tiger had caused the financially poor orphanage a great deal of damage. Dazai concludes that Atsushi is the tiger, or rather that he has a supernatural power to transform into the tiger under moonlight. The full moon is revealed and Atsushi transforms and attacks Dazai, who reveals his special ability: "No Longer Human", which stops all other abilities when he touches a person. He is able to subdue Atsushi. Not long after, Kunikida arrives at the scene with three other agents. Dazai decides to make Atsushi a member of the Armed Detective Agency.

I mean I don't hate dazai but I don't like him either. I kinda just nothing him. Also Gintama pfp. God I love Gintama Edit: nvm now that I thought about it, I kinda dislike him but I think that's bc of his relationship w Akutagawa and in general, his personality gets on my nerves idk why. Still he's a really well made character so I get why people love him :)

this show is so underrated in the west, esp in the yt reaction community T_T but the characters are great, the art is great btw most of the characters are named and characterized after real life authors from around the 20th century. their powers have to do with the books they wrote too so it's really interesting

While the english one's correct kaiji tang(the eng VA of dazai) voice both of them

Every Character and abilities is named for Real life Writers and their respective works. BTW the title 'Bungou Stray Dogs' translates to mean 'Literary Stray Dogs' 'bungou' means literature as a reference to the writers, while 'stray dogs' symbolize those that walk their own path different from others.

Funny enough, this series was also highly recommended to me, and I was bored enough that I gave it a shot. Binged the entire first season in one day. I couldn't stop. I love this series. So happy that you're giving it a go. EDIT: It's been a while since I've watched the series, but one thing you'll notice is when Atsushi has a belt on, it's always super long and makes him look like he has a tail, just like his beast powers. It's a nice reference.

Stray dogs is chock full of literature references from the get go, the real author dazai attempted suicide and double suicide multiple times before succeeding by throwing himself and a lover into a canal and drowning, atsushi's plight at the very start of the show is also the main plot of a short story called "rashoumon" which youll recognize as a power later in the series, theres an insane amount of minute details all the way down to characters having names in their phones for insults the authors called each other irl (specifically dazai and a character that will come later, Chuuya)... PS also 91 days is great!

I'm glad more & more ppl are finding this show because it really is amazing! Interestingly, most of the characters are based on & named after real-life authors with abilities named after their works. Their personalities & back stories are also influenced by their real life counterparts. It makes for some fun research. This series is full of unexpected turns & lovable characters. I enjoyed your reaction & I know you'll enjoy this series (especially the start of the 2nd season cuz that stuff is insane.) (I recommend looking into Ranpo's va too if you haven't already. Most of these va's are in Haikyuu & AOT.)

I have been waiting for a reactor that I watch to do Bungo Stray Dogs ever since I watched it a couple years ago. Amazing show and if you want a kind of trailer for the show I would recommend "glitter & gold [bungou stray dogs amv]" from panna amv. It's also super quick cut so there shouldn't be any spoilers

The type writer is likely to do with the theme of the show. All the characters are named after Classic authors. Their powers are named after books they have written and what the powers do have something to do with the content of the books. Given that this first group are all Japanese authors I wasn't familiar with them until I did some research. I'm afraid the real life Osamu Dazai commended suicide, which is where that obsession comes from.

Lmao, most of the authors that inspired the characters in Bungou Stray Dogs killed themselves ( ;_;) I saw a thread that showed how all of them died on instagram once, and I remembering like HALF of them died by suicide, and all the others (except one, I don't remember which one, but I think it was from the guild) died of cancer or tubercolosis, or of some other illness,,,, being a writer is suffering :/

The opening 1 and 3 are sung by Chuuya's VA (also Jean from aot) and the second one is sung by Tachihara's VA (Tanaka from Haikyuu and Mikey from TokRev)

7:27 i think it's called sectional heterochromia. It's the third type of heterochromia, and it makes Atsushi fuckin' _stunning_ 11:28 someone might have explained this already, but all the characters possessing abilities are named after authors, so this way of telling you their abilities and things that happen is made to look like an old written book It's real cool, kinda like in the song "hated by life itself" the lyrics are made to look like a suicide note

im glad you like it!! off the bat probably my favorite reaction to the first episode of bsd ive seen, i can really see the enthusiasm in your voice when you talk about it, its like you're really enjoying it. ive seen far too many people look so bored with the premise with just a few "haha"s snd "that was cool"s. thank you for this i hope you can keep reacting to this anime, its my favorite. love you bro you earned a subscriber. and yes all of your premonitions regarding the characters are correct, dazai is an extremely complicated character and atsushi struggles with self confidence a lot throughout the series. yes, kunikida does have the same va as asahi love them fun fact: all of the main bsd cast are based off of real authors and their abilities are named after one of their popular works. although most depicted here are japanese authors, we have some western authors as well! their backstories, personalities, and character motivations are all based off of the real author's life or the main character of the literary work their ability is named after too~ if you finish and end up enjoying the characters a lot, i highly recommend taking a look at their ability's real life counterpart. it can really give you a deeper look at how that character acts and why they act that way. i've always found dazai an extremely complex character, but after reading no longer human i feel ive grown that much closer to understanding him. i hope you enjoy our series, us bsd fans dont get that much content on youtube so really we eat up anything we can get, but i can already tell that your reactions to bsd will be one of the more high quality ones we get and you do not know how much i appreciate that dude. thank you, fr, keep doing what you're doing, we love you

So I'm sure plenty of people have mentioned this, but all of the main characters in this show are named for actual authors, so the characters introduced here are well known names in classic Japanese literature and their abilities are named for some of their famous works and their characters and backstories are influenced by the themes and content of their works as well, plus some aspects of the authors' lives. That literature aspect of the show is why a lot of the aesthetic with the cut-ins and ability effects look the way they do.

A fact you should know about the series in general is that, the characters names are names of actual authors and their gift/ability name is their most known book! If I'm not mistaken, Dazai's voice actor actually also voices Miya Atsumu.

I think it's likely just a visual comparison, and that he fits kind of in the whole teacher of trio, one of which has a demon inside of them comparison people make between jjk and naruto. But yeah, he does fit a bit more with Dazai.

Also, Kunikida is probably my most favorite character from ADA (aside from Ranpo), but not enough people appreciate him, so hearing that you like him that much made me happy ;___;
