Our final 2 days at the dock in Tortola completing the phase out of our Leopard 45 sailing catamaran was NOT without drama. We had issues up until the moment she left the dock in Tortola and right up until the moment we untied the lines to head to Puerto Rico.
Follow our journey as we plan a 4 yr circumnavigation visiting 40 countries spanning 6 continents on a budget of $4,000/mo.
Visit our website at SailingParadiseFalls.com for more info. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for more current updates.

I just found you guys and I am so thankful. To see your experience on edited raw and honest is a welcome relief. It’s not the other RU-vid channels are necessarily showing the ups and downs. Just seems as if there’s more sundowners and beautiful bays on most channels, and there are the reality of what it’s like. Really trying to get this dream from the dream to a reality. Thank you again so much look forward to sharing your adventure.

We were in contract to purchase a 2015 Beneteau Oceanis 45 from the Moorings. It was a disaster from the start. Lies and games the entire time. Glad we walked away from the deal. Hope you guys get it all squared away.

We got the boat - finally! It can be done but yes we agree, some very deceptive business practices! Hopefully, our story can shed much needed light on the issue 😊

We have a washing machine aboard our Lagoon 39. Glad you knew about the laundry strips even with going to the laundromat. They are a great weight and space-saver! 🧺

It is very interesting to see the interactions with the moorings from the buying side. It would be neat to see the list of things you found in the survey that needed repairs. Also it seems you used the moorings as your buying broker, it that correct? How were they in handling the issues. Look forward to seeing the sail back. Hope the upgrades are going smoothly!
@SailingParadiseFalls
@SailingParadiseFalls Год назад
We are definitely making a video about all of that! You cannot use outside brokers when purchasing from the Mooring - only their brokers. The whole thing is pretty messed up. It actually all worked in the end. You’ll get the 1355nm home in 2 weeks😊

I love how insurance is blamed for so much. The real issue with going between BVI and USVI has to do with customs. Much more believable is that they don’t want to deal with the complexity of importing the boat and dealing with clearing you at the same time. And every time you mention when something should be done it reminds me of the average car mechanic. You know, call them an hour after they should have updated you and they are just getting started. :) I would NOT a rate the tank issue as an ownership issue unless to say finding good mechanic work is just as hard as for your car.

Regarding not being on the boat for delivery to St. Thomas - those were the reasons told to us. The unfinished repairs should have all been completed prior to our arrival. We were told she was finished and ready for handover 1wk prior to our closing date. They had 8mo to complete items. Under “normal” circumstances having someone diagnosis and repair takes time but this was not a normal situation and nothing with the Moorings is ever normal. The tanks having leaking fuel was one of the repair items on survey. It should have been addressed and complete prior to handover.

As other have stated, we’re really enjoying the videos and we’re on a similar path (about 2 years behind). If you don’t mind me asking, since you financed a portion of the vessel, did that make boat insurance more difficult to obtain? Did any companies want to limit your geographic regions in which you are allowed to sail? Also, what is your family doing regarding heath insurance? Are you covered in all countries, including USA? Again, thanks for sharing your experience!

Wow - great questions! We plan to make another video discussing all of that. Insurance especially in FL is extremely hard and very expensive. When this plan started in 2016, we were going to pay cash for the boat BUT talking to our financial planner, that wasn’t the best plan. Health insurance and yacht insurance could be separate videos all on their own 😊 Thanks for you comment & questions!

Oh, and congrats about your plan. Start looking for your boat now, especially if planning to purchase from the Moorings! Hopefully, the catamaran will cool off in time for your purchase!

FYI, remove the labels from all can goods, and with a sharpie mark on the outside of the can what is inside, this will prevent you from getting lots of cockroaches, same goes with beer cases or anything in carboard boxes, take the beer out of the case and discard the box outside, they hid in the carboard box. 😀

Why did you choose to buy a used Moorings yacht instead of buying it new from the moorings, putting it in their charter fleet for 4 years, collecting the guaranteed monthly income and utilizing the boat (the 12 weeks a year you get with the Moorings/Sunsail)? You would have had a ton of sailing experience on your own yacht by the end of the 4 years and would have known the issues that come up from sailing the same or similar ship. You also would have had an easier purchase process buying new and then an easy transfer out of charter back to yourselves. Seems like this is a big jump from your previous boating experience. Was it just a timing issue? (ie; wanted to get the dream going NOW and not in 4 years).

We honestly did think about doing that in 2018 but it was a large down payment at the time and with four kids our plans were not solidified. Hindsight is 20/20. Thanks for your comment!

There are pros and cons to be in the Moorings program. First it is a good way to gain experience if you have none. Try buying insurance if it's your first boat. Second the program lets you go to bases all over the world. Downside is you are always flying somewhere and getting on empty boats. I personally loved being in the program and getting to try out lots of different boats.

You guys need to learn, learn how to be a mechanic, electrician, plumber and more. Those guys that work on your boat.. ya they don't see the boat they see $$. I was in the industry for years working on boats I could never dream to afford. Ten years later with a new career I am back with all that knowledge but applying it to one boat and that would be my boat. If you are going to have a boat you best know how to work on it even if you chose to have someone else do the work. This way you know what was done, how it was done and with what materials/parts. Example, Raw water pump for my Yanmar cost about $160 bucks. I could replace it myself but asked the marina for a price to do it for me. Labor aside they wanted 350 for the part however not surprising as markup is about 75 to 100% in the industry and if you provide the part labor goes up 75%. They have the advantage because everyone has a car and have a rough idea of what repairs should cost. With boats... not so much and if you are clueless you WILL get taken advantage of. Sorry to rant but for 20 years the whole marine industry made me sick to my stomach. Thinking of starting a how to channel about "what the marina said it would cost to fix vs what it really cost to fix". It is just a boat not a rocket for god sakes and we have been building them as well as using them since the beginning of recorded time.

Yep! That is true, every word. I will tell you this. Some things are better left to professionals. In future videos, we make some decisions based on safety and being able to qualify for insurance policies. Thanks for following our journey and look forward to your comments in our other videos!
