Morphological operations define how words can be modified, i.e. what type of operation is applied to change a word. This can be done by means of adding items or concatenating two or more entities or it can be achieved by non-concatenative operations that somehow modify the base. This unit exemplifies the main types of morphological operation.

I'm curious why differences in the tone of characters in Mandarin Chinese would be considered as a morphological operation. Is the concept relevant to instances of sound changes in words, or any differences between words? It seems that the 4 [ma] characters in Mandarin with different tones are unrelated to each other through sound change. Thank you

I'm also curious about this. I have studied Mandarin Chinese for many years now and there is no relationship between these words other than the fact that they are segmentally identical. Chinese is an isolating language, so there isn't much to say about its morphology, as Prof. Handke has mentioned in another lecture about morphology. It does not seem that different tones in Mandarin Chinese have anything to do with morphological operations, but they distinguish segmentally identical morphemes.

An Ablaut is a simple vocalic change where 1 vowel is involved. Umlaut needs two vowels resulting in a third: engl. feet was originally foti: /o/ and /i/ became /e/. A good present-day example of Umlaut is the German city name Duisburg where /u/ and /i/ become /y/.

3:40 Would 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' also be a case of infixation combined with reduplication? No, just kidding. Haha.
