Better idea for a toothbrush; Use a child's bamboo toothbrush. You can get them super cheap on Amazon. Really lightweight, cuts easily if you want to shorten it and much better for the environment too. Coupled with toothpaste tablets, it's my go-to.

I have a take apart toothbrush which has a hollow handle which covers the bristles while packed. I used to take a child's toothbrush and use baking soda instead of toothpaste. Those chair hacks are good to know, should I ever use one. My hikes have lately gotten long, so, no chair for me yet. I finally got to use an old-time hack when I slipped on a rock slab and tore a hole in the bottom seam of my pack...I sewed it up with dental floss. Worked great for the next long hike after which I retired the pack. I have a rule for myself: Never carry anything that has only one use unless that one use is vital (except for my travel guitar). I download music into my head and it comes out of the guitar. 😁 Thanks, Brice! Another insightful video! 👍

Great hacks, Bryce! I had to use my Darn Tough socks one morning this week to protect my hands while removing snow off of my Jeep's windshield and roof top. I lost my gloves on the trail as they fell out of my pocket (my bad!). The chair hack is brilliant and I will give it a try on my next trip. The rain jacket one is a hack I learned from my dad as he was packing his bag to attend a military academy many years ago. He rolled every piece of clothing and I asked why. He let a shirt unfurl and there were no wrinkles plus it took up less space in his duffle bag. I learned a lot of packing hacks while serving in the military. One of my favorites to keep my stuff dry is removing all original packaging even stuff sacks that are too heavy. I roll whatever I can, secure it with a light rubber band or a hair band and insert it into a ziploc bag squeezing as much air out before closing the zip. I use a magic marker to label the contents. There are stores that sell oversized ziploc bags and they are fairly inexpensive. Experience is a great teacher and one learns to improvise; and using products that have multiple capabilities will reduce pack weight dramatically. I am no where close to being an ultralight backpacker and use military surplus packs, gear and kits. However, hacks and common sense helps one to enjoy the outdoors without a lot of painful regrets :)

I use a cheap travel tooth brush, weighs 14g. The thing I like about it is the case attaches to the handle so it becomes a full length brush. I bring a chair and zseat, love all of those hacks. Lots of good tips. Another-airlines value weight savings, so the next time you go on an international flight or have a friend who does, check the bathroom for packaged freebies (or if you're flying business or 1st, the free pack of toiletries they give you). I've gotten all sorts of lightweight stuff that way-a super-absorbent lightweight mini-towel, comb, plastic sanitary disposal bags (1 gram for 4 bags) which I use for pills. The cut-down toothbrush weighs the same as the full-sized bamboo one I got for free from an airline.

Lol got you beat on the toothbrush and didn't even have to drill holes. 4grams, and 6g with the cover. Rocking a toothbrush I got when one of our flights was delayed for like 24 hrs from a crazy winter storm. The airport was giving out little baggies which had this short lightweight toothbrush, a little folding brush/comb, deodorant, and a little razor. I just can't convince the wife on buying a +$100 chair, and I don't want to cheap out on one of those ~2lb helinox chair one clones, so Ill be using a cheap Chinese folding foam seat pad for a little longer.

I have one of those toothbrushes from REI with the refillable toothpaste container in the handle. Never thought much about the weight of it, Tbh. I have considered drilling holes in my aluminum UST U-Dig-It trowel and other similar items to reduce weight, though. Only downside is finding the right balance between weight reduction and durability, as the cat hole trowel does still need some rigidity. I've also heard of using your hydration bladder for a pillow. Bonus points for having water in each in the middle of the night if you get thirsty. Great video and solid tips. Gonna have to see about rhythm chair thing.

Dig the hacks man. Thinking out of the box! The chair roll cage is kind of strange and that's what makes it bad ass. Some of my favorite pieces of gear are things I cut up, repurposed, or just found useful in an odd way out of necessity on trail. One of my favorites is a pair of $5 women's fleece leggings. I cut the legs off so they're basically just long super stretchy fleece tubes. I use them as tights while hiking, they slip right over my shoes so I can take them off without taking off my shoes. Use them as sleep socks. They can be doubled or even triple layered if its really cold, and as mittens. I've been using my bug net around my pillow to hold it in place for years, my rain jacket over my footbox to add warmth and protection from condensation. My dog recently popped my 5 year old pillow so I had to buy a new one. They upgraded the fabric to this smooth suede feeling fabric that sticks to four Velcro tabs that are placed on your sleeping pad. That damn thing doesn't go anywhere and the pillow weighs 2.5 ounces. Its called the pillow lock system. In my video from yesterday. I had several folks asking about watches recently so I sent them to your recent COROS video. Keep hackin. Later dude!

Golden rule: carry the lightest that DOES the job. I once drilled holes in a 5g lexan spoon and realized how stupid it was to create so much surface area for germs. Silver rule: smaller is not always lighter, weigh all your options. Just to poke fun after reading comments: yup, shaves weight from toothbrush and adds it back with a silly string on his Z-seat. Love the rain jacket/pillow idea, using the Z-seat under your pillow, and keeping your bill flat. I have an OR Hellium jacket on the way and I will never stuff it's fragile coating in to it's small pocket as the company suggests.

Sorry to break it to you, that is not the lightest toothbrush. Litesmith sells a two different versions with cases that seem to be lighter (if they weigh as advertised in their descriptions). Ingenious use of the chair as a roll cage, unfortunately it remains impractical for me to carry a chair as I weigh over their load limit still. It's a work in progress losing the weight. Neat way to fold rain jackets.

Some great hacks.....except for the tooth brush. Just get a kids toothbrush. Since yours is now too short, you will end up not brushing the back teeth or any of them too well. Also, all those holes and ruffed up edges will capture bacteria. Good try, but the cons outweigh the pros on that hack. So, get a kids brush and attach it to the top of your hat brush up....let the UV light purify it as you hike. Lol

If you hang your kilt on the legs of the chair then the condensation would run off of it! :-)

The head from an electric oral b toothbrush is 5 grams out of the box, and can reach your back teeth. Save yourself the hassle

1)Shave your hair off, Head, armpits, eyebrows, beard, junk, ears, armhair. Saves 1oz. 2) use dry baking soda for toothpaste 3)poop in morning before hike 4)don't bring chair 5)don't bring toothbrush cover, use twist tie and small saran-wrap piece 6)hike in tight Speedos

The ghosts keep your house cold, it's how the spirit world works. The chair hack is a fantastic idea bro!! I will definitely steal that one especially when tarp camping. My chair is always my catch all in camp. Watch out for any shadow people in the basement!! GHOSTS!!

Thanks Bryce. Your lightest toothbrush hack reminded me of my toothpaste hack: baking soda (aka sodium bicarbonate, but its chemical name is actually sodium hydrogen carbonate). It's dry and lightweight. Just sprinkle some on your toothbrush, or touch a wet toothbrush to it and some will adhere. It helps to deodorize your mouth, and doesn't make a white mess on the ground when you spit it out. Plus, you can use it as a body deodorant if you have trouble embracing the stink. Plus plus, you can dissolve a little in water as an antacid in case of acid indigestion.

I can’t believe I listened to close to 3 minute discussion about toothbrush mods to make it lighter. Am I really THAT bored?

@@BryceNewbold However, I will say that the chair hack to keep condensation off you foot box made up for the toothbrush time. So you chamfer the holes you drill in your toothbrush AND you hike with a chair. By the way a nice idea I picked up from Justin was to use toothpaste tablets instead of tubes. Much more convenient and probably saves more weight than chamfering holes! Enjoy your channel.

Wait a damn minute, I distinctly remember a video where this dude said chairs were illegal to hike with. You were even on his channel to talk about it! 😂
