My young Daughter gets threatened with a machete in her own home by some deranged intoxicated smack rat who tried coming through an open window holding a machete screaming 'open the f***ing door' then tries attempting to break the door down. My daughter has a full blown panic attack to the point were she collapses with fear. The police are called and who gets arrested? Her Dad, yes 'her Dad'......Her Dad nor myself was in the house at the time of the attack. Why did they handcuff her Dad and bang him up in the police cells for 24 hours? Because he was angry at the police for refusing to arrest the attacker who at the time lived on the next street. But yet they banging doors in and arresting people who post on Facebook.

Absolutely, and I know what I am talking about. I work in retail. The amount of shoplifting is staggering. I was told by one of them: " you can't touch me!" And you know he is right! My colleague called the police and all they asked her was how much she thought was stolen! If it is under a certain amount they won't even bother to come over!

I'm not very political but these prison terms for tasteless online posts (which don't explicitly incite violence) has moved me to be firmly anti-Starmer and anti-police etc. in a surprisingly short period of time. I'm genuinely worried. Its state censorship and bullying via tax funded police.
This its the erosion of free speech - what next - any criticism of the governments migration policy? Its a slippery slope down the route of censorship. I've been very uncomfortable with government interference with the courts to prioritise these cases - the judicial system should be uncoupled from political machinations. Albania isn't even in the top 10 of foreign nationals in the general population - they are massively over represented in the prison figures. Take some time and look at the ONS figures for prison numbers and breakdown by religion and nationality and cross check with the general population. The Tory party enacted something called the dictator clause to undermine peoples rights and democracy. This happened while they were killing ppl with Austerity.
As a long-retired police officer, I cannot believe that these people are receiving correct, unbiased advice to plead guilty. In normal circumstances the advice would be to plead not guilty, particularly in the case of thought crimes where the interpretation of posts is often highly subjective. It all stinks.
But as he says, if you don't plead guilty, you've got a pretty good chance of being held on remand! And it could take months for your case to be heard! It looks like people have no choice but to plead guilty! It's disgraceful!

1) It's blackmail. As the delays in coming to trial will be being put to them, the real possibility of spending longer on remand than they would have served in the sentence itself. 2) The majority of solicitors are in the pockets of the police anyway, and most of those who aren't are incompetent.

As an American, I absolutely cannot wrap my head around going to prison for speech or online posts. I watched a video of a British judge sentence someone to 20 months for a post about not wanting their taxes going to immigrants. I felt sick listening to the judge. This is horrifying!
I'm sure that video was unedited and shared by a respectable source too. Nobody is being thrown in jail for saying things like that, it's only for those who are planning or inciting violence and given the state of the country the last few weeks is it really a surprise?

The judge - in a red robe and white wig - read out what the accused said, said it was a most heinous crime that required an immediate custodial sentence , and then gave the accused 20 months. I got sick, and I'm American. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. How can someone sit in jail for 20 months for a social media opinion. That is mindboggling.
The current criminal system, in UK especially, is absolutely disgusting. I used to be the judicial officer in 1970ties in communist Poland and what is happening now in UK, is exactly what I observed there and then and from which I escaped as a refugee to the West half a century ago. Now the "democratic" West is more oppressive that was the communist judicial system in 70ties. Never was there so many custodial verdicts for rioting as is today in UK or custodial verdicts, in Orwell's style for publishing different way of thinking and different opinion. Our judges tried always to postpone sentencing, look for additional evidence and suspend the prison terms. I never heard of sentence of 2 years of imprisonment, simply for standing on the pavement and watching rioting people. Where is there person's guilt proven here? What kind of justice is that? What kind of judges are giving these verdicts? Are they independent judges or government functionaries? It reminds me of worse examples of Stalinist era in Soviet Union. After 50 years past from time I was part of that system I'm absolutely disgusted with what is happening now to this democratic justice system. Shame.
My daughter for uni had to sit in a court and watch what happened for a day, one man had over 8000 child images, he was allowed to walk free with a year suspended sentence.

Sorry, there is no separation between government and judiciary. The reality is that judges have become politicised (like the police) and public have no faith in the criminal justice system. The subjectivity of these interpretations would shame even N Korea.

I just saw a video of an illegal immigrant caught communicating with a 12 year old girl wanting to do all sorts of sexual acts, sending photos of himself and he's not even a legal refugee. I believe this is what the majority of the protest was for, not immigration itself, but properly vetting people coming into the country.

@@jackiefisher1820 It all changed when we were dragged into the EEC/EC/EU without our consent. We have had Habeas Corpus as the root of our justice system for centuries. You are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt. The EU has Corpus Juris which does not assume innocence but requires the accused to prove their innocence. When the European Arrest Warrant was adopted in the UK, it started taking us down the CJ route. It allows a person to be held in prison for months without formal charge and without any evidence being presented. Unfortunately, European courts are under political control and it seems our politicians have been unwilling to shake it off.
I am very proud of the fact I successfully studied English law but I am even prouder of the fact I chose not to practice it. The system seemed deeply conservative and deeply corrupt but I was never able to put my finger on the source of the corruption beyond the "power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely". Blaming the EU and political control makes as much sense as any other explanation. I notice that many of the recent "reforms", such as having a committee nominate a Supreme Court judge, are likely designed to achieve the opposite to the ostensible purpose. By pretending to be apolitical, they can be even more political.

That's not as easy as you might think. Anybody caught injuring someone else with a knife or even threatening to do so, will almost certainly face a considerable time behind bars. But they've got to be caught first. The laws for simply having a knife in a public place without good reason are already too draconian in my view. With a few exceptions for certain types of knife, you CAN have any sort of knife on you in public, provided that you can demonstrate that you have a good reason for doing so, for example you are a craftsman and the knife is used for your work and you are taking it to or from work. The problem arises if you forget that you've left it in the boot of your car and you get stopped at some other time. That in my view is too draconian. There is a big difference between leaving a knife locked in the boot of your car and wandering round a supermarket with it in your hand.

@@Chris-hf2sl Indeed to be an effective deterrent the culprit has to be able to weigh up whether they will be murdered on the streets because they do not have any means of defence or whether they will be arrested for carrying that. Most kids know there are no police about and therefore they fall into one of two categories, a perpetrator or a potential victim of knife crime. I am a senior citizen now, so I do not have to worry about being shanked by the kids nor being arrested by the cops. Actually although I live on the sort of estate that Guardian readers would not want to seen dead on (or fear that they would be) I find the kids to be respectful for the most part.

I am a life long Labour voter and I am beyond disgusted at this government. I WILL be voting Reform in future if only in an attempt to avoid this tyranny. I would not be so sure that Reform will not get the Labour vote going forwards.
Lets not pretend that these protests were down to the country leader that had been in power for what? 60 days without enough time to implement anything so meaningful. If they were carried out in the 14 years of tory rule it would be far more believable that it was a protest born in opposition of leadership mishandling of national issues.
Just Stop Oil have managed to protest for a long while without being violent. This government haven't shown any authoritarian tendencies, since they've only been in power for a few weeks. Violence doesn't give any weighting to the rioters' argument, they're acting as thugs and nothing else.
He was given a suspended sentence because paranoid schizophrenia was recognised as a factor in the crime, so the decision was not completely arbitrary. [I'm not offering an opinion on whether it was a good decision].
