@@TierTalk I think it’s a great advice for those who wants to work in prison and I’ve been thinking about doing it when the kids are bit older. Studying Sociology human behaviour help me understand all behaviour that tends to bring individuals together as well as all forms of aggressive behaviour and I also find it easy to read people and understand how criminal minds works and the psychology behind human behaviour

@@samsam723 I respectfully disagree with the soft sciences. Please understand I am not dismissing your studies. I hope you do choose a career in corrections. I believe you would be extremely valuable. I do ask that when you do that you enter believing no 2 human beings are alike and take everything case by case. I believe you have the ability to see when something is off in a person. Thats probably one of the most important assets an officer can possess knowing when someone is off. I had an inmate come up to me a couple of weeks ago telling me he has been clean for 9 months now. He told me that I walked by him when he was high and quietly stated to him "you're better than that". I didn't lock him up for being high probably because administrative confinement was full that day. But I did let him know I noticed. I see you being the same way. Case by case. Let them know bad behaviors leaves them vulnerable to the other predator inmates. Let them know they are better than that. Ps don't look up their charges it only jades in our ability to effectively do our job. Thats not why we are there.

@@conservativejew3229 I understand no two people are the same or behave the same. Surely having science background plays big factor dealing with criminals and knowing your own strengths and weaknesses gives you better understanding and you are self aware and ready to deal with any challenges. Working in prison is a chaotic environment , we know nothing is going to change and the behaviour is chaotic, if you are someone who can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen, than working with inmates isn’t the right job for you. I love challenge! I do disagree with you about soft science, and understanding criminal minds and human behaviour because of it you will have better advantage of to deal with inmates manipulative and how to avoid set ups by inmates
@conservativejew3229
@conservativejew3229 2 года назад
@@samsam723 its really isn't chaotic it's 10% chaos and 90% "boring". I wasn't dismissing your education. My apologies if it seemed that way. Putting people in a specific category/ box is not a good idea in prison. BTW I love my job. It's extremely rewarding.

My initial interview was pretty rigorous,I was thinking It was going to be simple since the interviewer is my uncle's friend,but no special treatment for me haha.But that was the right way for him to be and I respect him for not just giving me the job but making me earn it and I'm glad I did.

A great skill to bring into corrections, with the attention to and criticism of uses of force in the today, bring to the table as a new officer that you have the patience and the ability to see that an inmates inappropriate behavior doesn't change your demeanor. You are able to remove yourself from their unstable emotions and not take it personally but rather able to diffuse a high emotional situation without use of force but are willing to engage in a legal use of force if needed.

How do you dress for interview? Do you have to wear a suit and heals when you normally dress more casual, slacks and sweater and running shoes. Since officers wear uniform of polo shirt, bdu, and tactical boots? I'm not comfortable in dress up clothes. Do I wear suit and be uncomfortable or dress in flats and a little more casual and be comfortable so that I can focus on interview instead of feeling uncomfortable in my clothes. What is panel standards for interview wardrobe?
@TierTalk

You need to dress formal. It’s a professional interview so you must look professional.

I have my interview at my county jail next Tuesday. The first part of the interview process is a walk along for two hours then the panel interview immediately after. What can I do to prepare for the walk along part. I'm to be dressed in business casual and comfortable shoes so it will be obvious to inmates that I am not an officer and in fact they probably know instantly that I am a candidate so I expect a high level of acting out to perhaps discourage me from continuing the process. Do you have any tips or advice for preparing myself for that two hours adventure?
@TierTalk

Don’t worry about feeling new or being seen as new. That could stop yo I from wanting to learn. I would see, be humble. Take everything in. Ask questions. And don’t worry out being new.

Management is Management no matter where you learned it. We need more people in corrections who have managed people outside of corrections. Bringing those learned skills from other environments into corrections has an incrediblely positive effect and impact in corrections today. I've seen it with my own eyes.

@@TierTalk not that you would know but I'm a female correctional officer in a male prison. I find my job extremely rewarding and more so as the years pass. Just 2 days ago I walked into a dorm and received a standing ovation from the inmates. Brought me to tears. I'm tough in the aspect that I have high expectations of the inmates I interact with and they know it. They know I follow policy and procedure to the book and will lock them up when they choose to commit an offense. They don't realize how much they have taught me when it comes to patience and control but in return I strive everyday to give them care custody and control with empathy and compassion which is my institutions core values. I absolutely love my job.

It does seem like they are lowering the standards to address the staffing issues. We need to keep the screening process stringent to get more quality applicants. Just get the word out, and promote the profession.
@dat1reeree

I feel as though the physical requirement play a vital role in that. Not alot of mature (older) people are going to apply. So it leaves it up to the younger people. Let's be honest, SOME younger people will quit a job in 2.5.
