In 1843, Mormon prophet Joseph Smith, who was also the Mayor of Nauvoo, Illinois, was permitted by the Nauvoo City Council to sell liquor. According to Joseph Smith III, his father installed a bar in the Mansion House, in which his family lived and used as a hotel. Porter Rockwell was the bar tender. Emma did not approve and Joseph removed the bar.
