In 1843, Mormon prophet Joseph Smith, who was also the Mayor of Nauvoo, Illinois, was permitted by the Nauvoo City Council to sell liquor. According to Joseph Smith III, his father installed a bar in the Mansion House, in which his family lived and used as a hotel. Porter Rockwell was the bar tender. Emma did not approve and Joseph removed the bar.

It amazes me how few LDS know that JS ran for President of the United States, and had himself crowned "King of the World" on 11 April 1844 by the the Council of 50.

I knew about the bar, but I didn't know about the city council making an ordinance so that Joseph could sell alcohol. It's funny because Joseph was on the city council and was Mayor. Conflict of interest? He had basically combined the executive and legislative branches(being Mayor and on the city council at the same time), making a theocracy. A bar in the Mansion House...Joey Smith, the great hipocrite.

Having a bar in the house must have been a revelation. Like polygamy.

Ah, but if we just discount or deny these dicey elements of history, then we can continue to believe that "All is well in Zion" . . . right?

Before the prohibition, Utah made 70% of the nations beer.

Smith attracted to his cause men like Porter Rockwell who is mentioned in this video. That proves that Smith was a false prophet, see Matthew 7:15-19.

Funny thing is that lately I've encountered several devout Mormons who use this as an excuse for Joseph Smith, as they try to separate their "testimony" of the restoration from the problems of the church. Their claim is that Joseph Smith was a wonderful, wise and true prophet...and all of the problems in church history were caused by the other men around him, such as Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball, John Taylor and so on and so on. According to them, even polygamy was not from Joseph Smith. It was Brigham Young and his gang who cooked it up, arranged for Joe and Hyrum to be killed and then created documents and stories to make it look like polygamy came from Joe. When I ask them why it was that a true prophet called such scoundrels to positions of power, they just get a weird "does not compute" confused look on their face. I get a feeling a lot of true believers in the church are mentally going through desperate times these days.

Smith went from log cabin to a mansion house in 1843. Who paid for the construction of Smith's mansion house? Joseph Smith must have forgotten the Protestant work ethic that was known as early as 148 b.c. by Alma the prophet in Smith's Book of Mormon, eg, 'And he also commanded them that the priests whom he had ordained should labor with their own hands for their support,' ( see Mosiah 18:24 ).

Joseph Smith Jr. was a man that God appeared to and directed to bring forth preparations for the second coming of Christ and to gather scattered Israel.

Indeed, and such preparation’s are made known through RU-vid and the Internet from public record. Joseph Smith is quite possibly the biggest trickster in human history.

Joseph Smith wasn’t the only one pulling off this hoax. If it was only him this church would’ve died with him… His personality must’ve been smooth, convincing and intoxicating!
