Thank you to Lisa Laizure and Women's Bible Study ministry for inviting me to do this and letting me upload it on to my RU-vid channel! Here's a link to their web site womensbiblestudy.com/ and if you are reading this before June 25th you still have time to sign up for free and join us for the live web conference on Catholicism.
This video is about Mormonism and it is done with a heart of love for them and a desire for them to know the true peace that comes through the true Jesus.
I've got two more videos that will be in this series eventually. One on Jehovah's Witnesses and one on Catholicism.
Here is the link for the playlist of all these "Contending for the Faith Conference" videos • Contending for the Fai...
The final video on Catholicism will be uploaded in late June.

Hi Mike, I watch your channel a lot. I appreciate the way you go into the scriptures in depth, I am a Latter-day Saint, a saved Christian Latter-day Saint. I can't speak officially for the Church but I am a full time employee for the church. I teach "seminary" (our version of youth ministry / bible study). We call it religious educators. I think you are trying to be fair as I think you usually are. But I vehemently disagree with the way you have portrayed our beliefs. Much of what you have said is either ridiculously over simplified or outright false. I will admit many members of our Church believe a lot of the things you said but the fact is our own people don't understand what our theology actually is. There are many falsehoods and misconceptions. But it's just false the way you portrayed us. I would like to discuss this with you, in detail, point by point. At least to try and clear up the many misconceptions you described here. There are some important theological differences that I don't think we will agree on ever, but I think that you will see that there are many points that you got wrong about us that you will see that we do agree with you on. I just don't think it's fair to portray us the way you have and paint us in such a negative light. I think you're the kind of guy that likes to go deep and get into it. I'd like to do that with you.

@@brotherburnham I don't think it's fair to say that most members don't know the theology of their own Church. I'm a member and I know all of this. That's the thing that keeps hitting me is how could somebody like Mike reasonably believe that he knows more about Mormon theology than the Mormons? I would certainly never claim to know more about Calvary Chapel than Mike does. That's the thing that keeps red-flagging in my head. This is so unbelievably prideful of him to not only make the claim but believe it as well; enough to not do the basic honest thing and bring in a member of the Church to join the discussion. I also would like to point out that it's unethical for Lisa to host a discussion panel like this and invite a pastor from another faith to talk about that faith. Does she not realize that any pastor of any other faith but the one being discussed will have the same opinion that they are wrong? They HAVE TO, or they would be converting. It's therefore IMPOSSIBLE to get an unbiased treatise this way. The whole thing stinks and Mike should be ashamed to have agreed to do this. He should have told her if she wants to learn about the Mormons, to ask the Mormons and left it at that. Or better yet, if they want to have that discussion and have Mike ask some difficult questions, then bring in a Member of the Church to join the discussion. Let Mike raise objections and let the Mormons try to answer them. Then we have honest dialogue.

Hi Joseph. Unfortunately I’m not able to keep up conversations in the comments section but I would like to hear your best example of a significant error I made in describing LDS teachings. You were a Christian then too. I'm surrounded by Mormons. Some are good. Some fall short. Mike Winger would know accuracy if it sat on his lap. His condemnation of other faiths is an effort to generate clicks. More people pay attention if you criticize and tear down rather than uplift. Do you think condemning others is a ministry of the loving Savior or His adversary?
@scottbryner3
@scottbryner3 6 месяцев назад
@@johnlreim I agree that tearing down and criticizing is not typically a good thing, and it's always a struggle to balance being unashamed to tell the truth vs. separating people in to "clicks" by automatically assigning a set of beliefs to a person based on the teachings (past or present) of their religion or any other limited information you have on that person. For example, as a Latter-day saint there were always things I didn't like about church history, and I didn't like when someone called me a bigot or a racist because of things past church leaders taught. It wasn't fair to make me guilty by association because I didn't personally hold those beliefs. At the same time, everybody does that. I don't know who you are, and you don't know who I am or who Mike Winger is, yet we make assumptions about intent based on very limited information. Mainstream Christians do it to Mormons and vise versa. Now, as a born-again Christian, I find myself defending many Mormon's as people who love and serve the same Jesus that Christians do, but I do believe there are significant differences. When I say that I'm now a Christian, I'm referring to my new understanding and acceptance of the most core doctrine common to Christianity, but absent in Latter-Day Saint theology. That is the nature/ power/ love of God as shown in the FREE gift of Jesus's grace to all who accept and put their trust in Him. That theology leaves no room for works+grace= some degree of glory based upon deeds done in the body (see D&C 76 heading) because the Bible is clear that it is Jesus's perfect righteousness alone that is the basis for my judgement rather than my own works. While it may seem like criticism or tearing down to say it, a truth like that can't be left unsaid in order to preserve someone's feelings. That's what love looks like sometimes- sharing truth even when it's uncomfortable to do so. In speaking of sharing the gospel with others, Paul said "...always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect." I'll have to watch this video from Mike Winger again, but it seemed to me like he was doing that- attacking false ideas in love rather than people, etc.

@@johnlreimonly mormons think they're truly christian. The same applies for most religions. The mormons also think they're the one true church. Just like lutherans, baptists, evangelists, pentecostals, Catholics, Jehovah's Witnesses, etc. Fact is, we can't all be correct. So a true effort needs to be made to make that our effort. We must all agree that some of us are wrong and focus on what we all agree on and work to build on that. Mormons don't fall anywhere on the logical scale of any "true" religion. I state it like that because some religions are more true than others but not all are the TRUE faith that is to be christian. Mormons believe we all die and get our own planet and all kinds of non biblical things. Fact is, basing any faith outside of the bible (which is the one and only true book all christians should follow in order to be considered christian). Anything else outside of that is dogma and not necessary for salvation. Salvation should be the common denominator in true Christianity. And if you get your idea of salvation from outside of biblical scripture it is a false doctrine. Thus, not christian.

I live next to a Mormon family and I adore their teenage girls so much. As a mom of three little one’s, they’ve been a blessing to me through cleaning, baking, babysitting, and so on. I’ve had them over many times to just hang out and I’ve been praying for their salvation and for the Lord to use my family somehow. I’m so thankful for these teachings and I’ll be rewatching this and your other videos and taking notes. I’m not of the mindset that I need to shove facts at them, but they’re so inquisitive of my faith and as I share my faith as a Christian, I want to be equipped with knowledge of their faith. I already had one of the girls ask me more about my quiet time with the Lord and how to keep a prayer journal and I’m just amazed at how the Lord is working on their hearts. 😊 The whole family is so sweet, I’m so thankful the Lord moved us here next to them.

So I grew up Mormon. I technically still am, however I no longer believe. That faith transition was one of the hardest things I've gone through. Being Mormon was a pillar of my identity. I now find myself very skeptical of any religion. Not that it's bad that other people believe, it's just not for me. I have a question. How do you know your faith is correct? It seems there are contradictions and moving goal posts in every religion. In Mormonism it was the Spirit that revealed truth. As I've gotten older and seen people hang out in echo chambers and I started to doubt the spirit I felt was coming from God and felt it was just confirmation bias. So how do Christians know? Is your faith certain? Are you sure that you are in the correct religion? Maybe I'm just a lost sheep, but I feel like everyone that is doing their best with what they've been given is doing the right thing. I'm trying to be very careful about judging others since each situation is very unique and one thing I do know is how little I know. The older I get the more I realize I don't know.

@@123mneil When you study the bible, it becomes apparent that Christianity is the only true religion. It all hangs on the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. If Jesus wasn't raised from the dead, then Christianity is not true, however, there is much evidence that the resurrection is true. For one, the bible tells us that Jesus appeared to over 500 eyewitnesses. How do we know this? That's a lengthy topic for discussion because there are many beliefs that are used to refute it but, in my opinion and through my own research, I've come to the conclusion that it's true. A great book for answering all your questions, check out "Evidence That Demands A Verdict", witten by an atheist to disprove God. This book is about 800 pages of everything that pertains to the bible and boths sides of every argument are provided with verifiable sources quoted. How we got the bible (it was the Roman Catholic Church as they like to claim), when, how, where, who translated it, who transcribed, how it was transcribed, the materials it was written on, the tools used to write it, the accuracy of the scribes as well as the tens of thousands of ancient manuscripts that still exist today, over 60,000 total, over 20,000 of them for the New Testament. I think I picked the book up on Amazon for around $20 in hardback. I hope this helps you. If you have any questions, please ask. God bless you in your search for truth. One last comment on judging others. We are instructed in the bible to use sound judgment. Matthew 7:1 says, "Judge not lest ye be judged" is referring to hypocritical judgment and not righteous judgment. This verse is often misquoted with no conext to silence critics. In 2 Timothy, we are commanded to use the scripture to teach, rebuke (reprimand sternly), correct and train in righteousness. We cannot do that without making a judgement on those who are following darkness. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God[a] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. The bible is full of verses on rebuking sinners, for example in Proverbs 27:5, we read, "better is open rebuke than hidden love." Another verse that requires judgment and rebuking is James 5:20 that says, "let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins."

And yet, by all accounts, his estimate is 100% not accurate. Joseph Smith never claimed it was made from 24-karat gold. Different people estimated the weight of the plates differently. According to Smith's one-time-friend Willard Chase, Smith told him in 1827 that the plates weighed between 40 and 60 pounds (18-27 kg), most likely the latter. Smith's father, Joseph Smith, Sr., who was one of the Eight Witnesses, reportedly weighed them and said in 1830 that they "weighed thirty pounds" (14 kg). Smith's brother William, who had lifted the plates, thought they "weighed about sixty pounds [27 kg] according to the best of my judgment". Others who lifted the plates while they were wrapped in cloth or enclosed in a box thought that they weighed about 60 pounds [27 kg]. Martin Harris said that he had "hefted the plates many times, and should think they weighed forty or fifty pounds [18-23 kg]". Smith's wife Emma never estimated the weight of the plates but said they were light enough for her to "move them from place to place on the table, as it was necessary in doing my work".

This is one of the more accurate representations of the mormon church that I've seen done by an outsider. A couple corrections: On a mission, there isn't someone at their apartment who will "fix" anything weird they heard at the end of the day. A new missionary will generally be paired with a more senior missionary, who might know an answer, otherwise if they really want they can ask their mission president at their monthly "zone meetings." Regarding baptisms for the dead, they believe everyone has to be baptized to get into heaven, and as it's a physical ordinance, it must be done on earth. If you looked at that Plan of Salvation chart you showed, there's an intermediate phase called the "spirit world" where we go in-between death and the resurrection. It's during that time that the missionary work is done, and when Jesus was dead for 3 days, this is where mormons believe he went, and established this missionary program. During this phase, the dead can accept or reject the baptism that was done, and then they go to final judgement which will decide if they go to the celestial, telestial or terrestrial kingdom (or outer darkness, if you're really, really bad). Outer Darkness is reserved for Satan & his angels as well as a select few people, and the people that qualify for this kind of depends on who you talk to. Most people today will say you have to have an absolute knowledge of Jesus and then still turn against him, which would mean only those he's like physically appeared to. But you can find plenty of scriptures and words of older prophets and apostles that say that if you've gained a testimony through the Holy Ghost and then deny the Holy Ghost, you've committed the unforgivable sin and then you're going there. Apostates who leave the church have a pretty good chance of landing there, depending on who you talk to and whether they start openly criticizing the church. The washing & anointing that you mentioned in the temple is kind of correct, depending on the time period, as it's changed dramatically. As originally instituted, there was a tub where you would be washed while you're entirely nude, and then oil from a horn was poured on you. This changed around the 1930s, where you would wear a "shield" which was effectively a white poncho that was open on the sides. There, this was so they could reach inside anoint your breast, navel and loins with oil. Then around 2005, they ditched that entirely and now just anoint the head and symbolically anoint the rest of the body. Amusingly enough, mormons will point to the changing ordinance of baptism from immersion to sprinkling as a sure sign of apostasy of christianity, as Joseph said the ordinances of God were set at the foundation of the world and were not to be altered. But they went from something like immersion to sprinkling in their washing & anointing themselves, so there's a little bit of hypocrisy there. There were a couple other very minor things, like which person gave which quote that you kind of gave off the cuff, but all trivial. A few clarifications to help make sense of mormon theology though that you seemed to struggle with: On the free gift of resurrection, when I was a missionary, I would describe that as follows: When we die, our bodies separate from our spirit. It's not our fault that we die, our mortality came with the fall of Adam. The atonement of Jesus fixes both physical death & spiritual death, and we'll all be resurrected because it's not our fault we died. Spiritual death is sin, and since sin is our fault, we have to repent in order to take advantage of that part of the atonement. On faith vs. works, that's always been a tough one for Mormons to really explain. But Mormonism falls into the category of a high demand religion, and that's on purpose. One of their very early creeds is the Lectures on Faith. This was included with early versions of the Doctrine & Covenants, and the Lectures on Faith was the "doctrine" part of the book. When they removed them from the scriptures, they still kept the same name though. In this, it says: “A religion that does not require the sacrifice of all things never has the power sufficient to produce the faith necessary unto life and salvation.” So, in order to have enough faith to gain salvation, you need to do a _lot_ of work and sacrifice. They still love to quote Jesus saying, "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light," while at the same time experiencing horrible burnout from all the demands on their time, money, etc... But good luck converting Mormons with Christianity. It's almost impossible for an outsider to really know what the LDS church teaches and believes, and if you bring up things the church used to teach but doesn't anymore (it's insane just how much of what used to be taught has silently been cast aside!), they'll insist that the church doesn't believe that or it wasn't really "doctrine," just something some guy said. If you tell them something they've never heard of, they'll insist it's some kind of "anti-mormon lie" and you don't really know what you're talking about. Converting with Christianity is usually easier with people who convert to Mormonism rather than someone who grew up and only knows that religion and culture. They've spent their entire lives being told all the other churches are led by men with no authority from God, and no priesthood. That importance has been ingrained so deeply, that if they do leave Mormonism, they'll barely consider another church because of it. Also, when the process of leaving the church they experience so much religious trauma (Mormonism has been a key point in _every_ part of their life, and discovering it isn't what they thought it was shatters their entire world!), they become so skeptical of any religion that in order to protect them from such an experience again, they are unable to put their faith in something else. Obviously, this doesn't happen to everyone and there are many exmormons who switch over to Christianity, but I would guess this is only around 25%.

Up! Thanks for offering this additional information. I would wish for your comment to be pinned at the top of the comment section. On your last paragraph, nobody will come to Christ apart from the work of the Holy Spirit and He is powerful to brake through all the barriers you have so properly listed. The same happens to all devout followers of false religions. Not only is it a strong cultural and social structure holding them back, but learning the truth about their belief system also has implications on the way they view their loved ones who have already passed away - as now they realize some or all are lost for eternity... It is a heartbreaking situation indeed. May the Lord give us love, compassion, authority and wisdom to reach those trapped in these false doctrines. Love from Brazil

I have Mormon in laws. I won't get into all the personal issues that accompany this, but suffice it to say I'm a 2nd class citizen in their eyes. My mother-in-law notified the Bishop of my address and he came over along with 2 "elders" (teenage boys). He attempted to convert me, using primarily fear and "Don't you want to live eternally with your husband?" "Aren't you afraid to be separated?". When I refuted things with scripture and brought up Galatians he became noticably angry and went on a rant about how tolerant all of his religious friends are (ranging from Buddhists to Jehovahs Witnesses), but that he has these "Baptist" acquaintances that refuse to be tolerant, and that oddly enough the "Christians" he knows are all exclusive and form their own little club on their own and refuse to accept others. He went on and on about how sincere and accepting everyone else is, but how cold and rude Baptists are (I'm not a Baptist, so it was bizarre). He said "You think you're a nice woman, but you aren't." It was very strange, but understandably upsetting to him because it's not demonic like his beliefs. Yes, Christianity is exclusive in saying that we are ALL sinners and need Jesus ONLY. We can't work our way up, and we're not inherently kindhearted ot good. We don't accept religion, because religion is a false work leading to Hell. Only the blood of Christ can accomplish salvation ❤

The one rule I had was that the answer HAD to come ONLY from The Bible then I would start with my questions (which I already knew the answers to). I had been kicked out of the JW’s. That’s very true it’s based on feelings. I was listening to some Mormans at my college talking, and one of them was justifying how the Book of Morman is real by saying, “Whenever I read it, I feel by the Holy Spirit that it’s true.” One could also FEEL the Earth is flat, but you have to follow the evidence to see how reliable that feeling is.

@@joshuaalbertwolfe9986what is meant here is the Book of Mormon was written in the early 1800’s when not much was known or understood about archaeology or evidence. Joseph Smith, the seer that translated the records from reformed Egyptian language into English, was young and unlearned about the world. It wasn’t until the 1900’s that discoveries and other evidence has been unearthed that align exactly with what Joseph Smith wrote. I’m sorry, but I wouldn’t believe an ounce of what Pastor Mike is saying here. There is evidence that backs up the Book of Mormon if you look for it, but we don’t care much about the evidence, because as to what you heard those Mormons talking about, the feeling you get by reading the book far outweigh any evidence. The Holy Ghost reveals all truth if you are willing…

Mormons, JW and Catholics ALL BELIEVE IN CHRIST. Christian heretics are still Christian. Are people justified by faith in CHRIST- or faith in protestant doctrines? Protestants apparently love spiritual pride more than logical consistency.

"What Christians have ever tried to claim they are also Mormons?" The obvious answer is Mormons. Regardless of whether Protestants and members of the Church of Jesus Christ have different views of what Jesus Christ was, they both worship Jesus Christ and rightfully should be called Christians as a result. Mormons, Catholics and Protestants all worship Jesus Christ and all are Christians. None of these 3 more specific categories of Christians call themselves the names of the other 2. I believe it is egocentric for any of these 3 groups to pretend that they are the only Christians (i.e. that the other 2 groups have no claim on that).

@Baphomet the Sabbatic Goat Saying "keep your beliefs to yourself" is already espousing your belief that people should keep their beliefs. It's a self-defeating statement. Plus, it's unrealistic. Whether someone is a feminist, Christian, or whatnot, they *will* act on their beliefs. There's no person who believes in one thing like the LGBTQ need equal rights, or that people need to be saved from their sins, or that people should keep their beliefs to themselves, who will just simply keep that belief to themselves.

Had an lds friend sharing with me. I saw that Mormon scripture so I prayed that prayer. God showed me something in the Bible (wish I remembered exactly what) but basically he honored that prayer and showed me the book of Mormon is not of him. So, why did my God answer this way while Mormons (and presumably unsaved seekers) get the burning in the bosom? My thought on that is I was saved and had the Holy Spirit and so when I ask God for bread he will not give me stones as it were. 🤷

An attorney knows that after a prosecutor presents his key witness, the case against the defendant has been cast in its worst possible light. Someone quick to render judgment at that point might determine the defendant guilty, but then an interesting phenomenon in the courtroom happens. The defense commences cross-examination of this same witness, and the following frequently occurs: The definitive answers of the witness start to wilt under the pressure of cross-examination. The witness who appeared so unimpeachable now has some inconsistencies, perhaps even glaring holes in his recollection of events. The seemingly rock-solid story of the witness begins to crack and crumble with each new question put to him. The witness was able to handle the softball questions of his prosecutor, but when the hardball questions of the opposition came, he could not withstand their intensity or probing nature. When the cross-examination is completed, the witness has been largely discredited. The observer who was previously ready to “hang” the defendant now sees with a different set of eyes the man’s complete innocence. It is pretty easy to make all your claims without any cross examinations. With proper cross examination your claims would fail to hold water.

@@smidc Seems to me he's saying that Mike is casting Joseph Smith and The Church of Jesus Christ in the worst possible light. If we start to question Mike's version of things, we find that most of these are either half-truths, misunderstandings, or flat out lies. We make jokes about insane defense attorneys who approach the witnesses with lines like "So, Mister Doe, IF THAT IS REALLY YOUR NAME..." But Mike actually DOES this by constantly referring to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints by the name 'Mormons'. At one point, he concedes that we are 'sometimes' known as 'latter-day saints' but that's as close as he gets to actually using the true name of the Church. That's not objective by any stretch. It's like asking Draco Malfoy his opinion about Harry Potter and hoping to get an honest unbiased critique of Harry's virtues and vices.

I agree- Mike is putting things in a bad light, little context on sticky issues, and he probably wouldn’t want his faith presented in this manner. Every Christian denomination can be made to sound absurd. I think he believes he’s being fair and declaring truth, but saying it all comes down to ‘a feeling’ is just over simplified and wrong. Almost every religious belief could be reduced to such a cartoonish caricature, by someone outside that particular faith. Unsubscribing, as I’ve lost trust.

I don't know of any others that can present Daniel and Revelation seminars for three to four solid weeks. I also had interactions with a high priest. Last time we spoke I told him I would leave my church if I learned that this was a false church. He had a shocked look on his face and asked if I could do that. I explained to him that I would want them to be saved too and learn the truth, but my loyalty is with Jesus. That I would miss them but I would leave. I got the feeling it was not that simple for him. The first 3 mormons I met asked me to pray. I was a bit hesitant at first but I had said yes and so I did. This was before I did any search about what they believed. It was the strangest experience ever. I heard a voice in my head saying, "They are exalting man rather than God!" I thought it was odd because 'exalting' was never in my vocabulary. Fast forward months later I find out that they actually believe man can be God and God was a man, demoting God and exalting man...

What did that sound like? Because I think I've heard a similar voice before

@@soupcoup3912 I wouldn't be able to discribe it correctly. It was like my inside monologue, but different. A voice without a voice that makes a sound. Still to this day an odd experience.

@@Basilicum_Raspberry yeah I get that, I grew up with a huge undertale phase so I processed it like it was a font almost, and it felt like a light blue with a soft font kind of thing

When I was searching for God before God led me to Jesus mormons actually came to my house but I prayed to God and I said God just guide me to your will and I never read the book of mormon it was always up there on my closet and thank God he didn't allow me to fall into this but in a sense Satan was trying to lead me to a trap but thank God I remember I prayed to God and said God if this is your way then give me a sign that onky I would know it was you but that sign never came. Tha k God, I didn't fall into this cult, and thanks to God for my mom because my mom also told me never to trust mormons because of their teachings. This reminds me of something from I believe the book of Isaiah, but it says, "My people are destroyed because of a lack of knowledge." And now that I think about it, THANK GOD he gave me a brain that is driven by knowledge, not feelings ughhhh THANKNYOU GOD!!!! ALL GLORY TO GOD!!!!
