The Yaesu FT-817ND, such a legend of a radio! It’s been a while since I took it out and I wanted to let it stretch its legs. Band conditions were a bit rough! About half way through, I swapped in the Yaesu FT-891 to see if a little power would make a difference. All in all a great CW Parks on the Air (POTA) activation at Tuskegee National Forest US-4451.
Thank you for joining & 73!

That's a chungus key! Sorry this one was a challenge, but thanks for taking us along. I definitely enjoyed the recap comments. Man, I sold my 818 and immediately regretted it. I contacted the buyer and told him I'd gladly pay extra to get it back. He said he'll think about it :) Totally irrational as I have many other better suited portable rigs. Just love the thing for some reason... Great video, OM. 73 es cul

Sits in a park sending CW in the fog, refers to himself as an adult 🤪 I just got my new callsign in the RBN straight key ‘pow’ style. Twice! (20th April 12-13wpm). I set up Ham Alert app to ping my phone. Couldn’t believe it when the pop up arrived. Posted a 1 minute video of my efforts if anyone is interested. Absolutely bonkers. I was cranking out a few more CQs and my phone pinged once more. Total surprise 😅 Then the SWR shot up so I went outside and sure enough the matching core was super toasty. Need to control the urge. CW is addictive eh! Still a ways to go before going POTA but thanks for the inspiration Aaron 👍🏻 73 de JL1AJE John

Very nice John! Welcome to the addiction of CW. I used to operate digital, SSB, etc. Once I tried CW a few years ago, that was it for me. Never looked back. I’ll check out the video!! Maybe we will get a contact in the log one day. 73!

@@w4arb Thanks for the reply Aaron! Slow reply this end... busy with new toys as you can imagine. Yes would be great to log a contact one day! Portable power is the next part of the puzzle. 73

I love the comments at the end. What worked and what did not work. I am an accountant, so what do I know about radios? Yes, I built several from kits so what. All about experimentation. And with that you learn. First time I have seen the AF6L key. Looks nice. I mostly use bugs after I discover KN4YB. Feels more like a paddle to me. Right Angle Dual Paddle Bug. 72 Bill KG4FXG

Thank you Bill! I agree. Experimenting and trying things is one of the most fun parts. KN4YB makes great keys, I have been using his cootie (both as a cootie and a single paddle) on my desk at home as my main key for the last couple of weeks. The AF6L is a solid key for sure, but different feeling with the thick metal arms for finger pieces. Any tips on learning the bug? I have a vibroplex and try, but it’s the one keyer that hasn’t “clicked” yet. 73!

@@w4arb The Bug. I wanted to do more with SKCC and that meant Cootie, Straight Key, or Bug. I have a Vibroplex Blue Racer and you can't slow it down. Even with the Vari-Speed. I am told better to try with the Standard Vibroplex. Then a whole new world opened to me. KN4YB Bug. I could adjust it correctly and easily. And it is easy to send with so smooth. Not choppy like the Vibroplex. Speed setting around 14-30WPM. I run around 16-18WPM as do most in SKCC. Then I got a Begali Intrepid Bug. Same thing, easy to adjust and send code. Similar in that it slows to about 18WPM. I am not against Vibroplex, but they really are not for CW below 20WPM. And I only have the Blue Racer as experience which is not enough to judge here. So would say the Blue Racer is for 25WPM plus. I would try paddles and set keyer in "Bug Mode". I bought a keyer kit that has that, and while not SKCC legal you would get the feel similar to KN4YB dual paddle right angle bug. The dashes are all manual. Just find a keyer with a Bug Mode to get the idea and try it. I really do love my bugs. I am practicing cootie on my HST Begali. I am not a contester, but I do like the SKCC monthly 2 day sprints. Exchange is just a little more than POTA but very easy. I even use their logging software. Easy to hook up rig to it and it knows freq for logging. Most rag chews I am paper logs. So much fun. I am glad I got the bug and even took a few LICW SKCC classes. CW ops are so polite and I feel at home being one of them. 73/72 Bill KG4FXG

Great insight, thank you! The regular vibroplex is what I have and it’s still hard to get it slower than about 21-22. I may have to try one of the KN4YB ones eventually. Sounds like they’re smoother. 73!

My ham alert has not caught me near a rig lately Aaron! Maybe the fog is a combat multiplyer for band conditions.. bands had been yucky here for a day or so.. Thanks for the videos!
