Finally got round to taking the windscreen out. It took a fair effort but it's out. Now I can carry on preparing for paint.
The car is a 1958 Morris Minor 1000 with the 948cc engine. Last WOF was in 1995 and has been parked up ever since.

Well done on getting the trim out without damage, look after it, they're as rare as hens teeth. For what it's worth in my mind you took the right approach, slow & easy 👍 And that was the easy part, putting it back, whole different thing....there used to be a small tool to help put those trims back in, it slipped on the trim, then into the rubber & opened up the gap to slip the trim in, can't recall what it was called...🤔

That'd be a locking strip tool, or a glass trim tool, depending on the application! There's two main types of chrome trim, though: T-trim, which sets into an expandable slot on the gasket, and flat, which hugs around an extrusion on the gasket. Unfortunately, it looks like this may be the latter type, which as far as I'm aware, there's no tool to aid in installation. T-trim sets are extremely easy, just put the gasket on the glass, slip the trim into place, make sure it's properly seated all the way around, wrap your soapy rope around the gasket, and have a buddy push the glass against the pinchweld while you rope it in. Locking strip sets, it's usually best to put the gasket on the car, set the glass in on the bottom, and grab a large hook tool to hook the trim over the glass. Flat trim, though, is a total variable, and in the case of this video, it's difficult to tell how best to set, just because the removal process was so destructive due to the age of the rubber.

The aim was to do it without damage regardless of how long it took. We achieved that thankfully! Putting it back in doesn't sound easy but as always we will get it done one way or another.

Good man Charlie for helping dad out again! I thought that glass was going to fly over the bonnet 🙈😂😂😂. Nice work Jonathan and neighbour! 👍☺️

Charlie stayed well away for the actual removal. Too many sharp things and too much concentration required. He just came back at the end for the glory 😎😎😂

usefull tip, when working on glass and chrome/stainless trim pieces with a screwdriver, wrap the tip of the screwdriver in masking tape. Helps to stop it damaging trim and chipping glass.

I bet it wasn’t easy mate Being bonded for so long, well a bit easier with Charlie’s help 😊, bonus that it looks pretty decent underneath... top job 👍👍👍

Hmm, can't say I've ever pulled a gasket-set windshield out of a car with the intent of reusing it! I imagine that gasket was fairly hard and brittle after all these years, though. Kudos on getting that trim piece off!
@Badgertronix
@Badgertronix 5 лет назад
It's all in one piece and undamaged which is all I could ask for. The rubber was rock hard and there were many different adhesives in play. IT must have been replaced by some cowboy or leaked or something. The bodgers had been in there prior to me :)

Somewhere around 3:00 the actual size of the car finally became obvious. Wow, that's a small car! And I say that as somebody who owns a (modern) Mini Cooper.

It's pretty small, I don't fit in it too well. Not sure how it compares to a Mini. It's probably slightly larger on the outside at least.

Also if it's like mine, the rubber is that old that when it rains it leaks though to the interior. So replacing the rubber is a good idea

Cutting the rubbers is the wisest move because kicking the glass out is likely to crack it.

Hey Charlie just remember that the water goes into the radiator and not the gas tank.

@@Badgertronix One of the kids that use to go to our church took the water hose, turned it on, and stuck it in the dryer vent. The parents didn't realize they had a pool in their basement until they went downstairs and found 6 inches of water on the floor. So some stones in the tank is not a real biggy. Oh and Charlie forget I told this story.

I do have an odd thing about music on RU-vid channels. Some use no music at all - perfect! Some use occasional music they like, which is also cool. You're pretty good in that music is only used when you're doing a fast-forward or something. But I totally hate channels that use continuous generic music. What would be awesome is if you used occasional music from local musicians you're a fan of, with a credit in the notes.
@Badgertronix
@Badgertronix 5 лет назад
I try and keep the music unobtrusive and for sections where you can turn the sound down if you don't want to hear it. It's hard to cater for everybody's tastes! You're right, it would be great to use local music :)

There were 3 different types of adhesive and the rubber was hard as rock. It has seen some action over the years. Cheers Zig
@jasonblann33
@jasonblann33 5 лет назад
All you had to do was pull out thr silver trim in the middle out,and then push the window out from the inside out. 3 minutes tops
@Badgertronix
@Badgertronix 5 лет назад
There were at least 3 different types of adhesive that had been used over the years and the rubber was rock solid. There was no guarantee it would have come out in one piece. The trim was not moving without bending.

i did it on my own in under 30 mins and cut the rubber a lot less than this you made a bit of a mess of it to be honest all you had to do was cut it in the corner. i have the cuttings if want proof that its possible with one cut
