The holes in the driver covers are used to linearize the outputs. They provide a loading of the driver cones that is linear or constant so that the output will be linear or constant or flat over the frequency range. I have never seen that done in a commercial design, but is very clever. In addition, the waveguide for the tweeter is very large to help it reach to lower frequencies without distortion as well as increase output levels. I have only seen this in one other speaker and is very smart. Very intelligent design!

Barrett, so glad to see this review. I been enjoying the 40B for a couple of months.What a review should be and not a story of an album that another reviewer did when reviewing the 40B. I demo’d the 40B against my old Monitor Audio Silver 2, Ascend Acoustics Sierra 2EX, and Dynaudio Evoke 20. The 40B measured really well with ARC on my Anthem AVM70. The Sierra 2EX were the closest to the 40B, but I heard a shrill from the REEL ribbon tweeter in some songs that I used. The 40B are very smooth, and really enjoy the top end. Two SVS SB2000 pro subs take care of the bass and Yves from Anthem group tuned my subs and fronts together really well. I’m very happy with this setup. 70LCR for center is awesome speaker as well..

I recently bought a pair of 40B to use with my Luxman tube amp. It was a close decision between the 40B and the similarly priced Sonus Faber Sonetto II. If I listened to primarily classical or jazz, I would have chosen the Sonettos. But I listen to a lot of EDM and modern rock, so the superior detail, clarity, and imaging of the 40Bs fits better with my tastes. They have changed the way I think about bookshelf speakers.
@Johnnytrades101
@Johnnytrades101 2 года назад
Great review! (as always) The new Founder series has really impressed me. When the news first appeared, I wasn't to interested, firstly was the price. I have owned a set of Paradigm Prestige, which I really liked. Was it worth the significant price difference? Well, now after seeing, and listening to them (at Base Electronics, my long time go to HiFi store), I now truly KNOW that the Founders are worth every penny, and then some. Compared to others in the price range (I have listened to) they are #1. Martin Logan, Sonus Faber, Dali, Focal, PMC, and a few others. Legacy Classic Hd"s, which I currently own are also an amazing speaker. Very impressive, and enjoy them very much. Now I have a problem, New Paradigm Founders??? the 100F's! It is a very tough call. There is so much to like with the Legacy's, just a few nit picky things that are there, (as with any speaker) then there is the Founders, they bring a LOT to the table, just as you described in the video. You nailed in words what the Founders do IMO. I agree that the Founders are just a tad less "clinical" or "revealing" but still have the nuance and detail of a really great speaker. Retailers always represent many many brands, which is good for choice. But, a specialty store like Base Electronics, John in particular, has been a Paradigm dealer and aficionado for many years, he probably knows more about the speaker line than the manufacturer lol. They represent the brand for many reasons, build quality, sound, innovation, support, and a Canadian brand. In this day and age of online retailers, reviews, and such... to see, feel and listen still can not be replaced, as well as developing relationships. Keep up the great content Barrett, you always call it as it is! Cheers! (sorry for babbling lol)
@SpecOfTech
@SpecOfTech 2 года назад
Haha not babbling at all John. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos carefully and fully, and then provide some well thought out feedback. You do indeed have a difficult choice ahead of you. The Legacy speakers have an amazing sound, "revealing" as you said. The level of detail and clarity with Legacy Audio speakers truly is something that needs to be experienced. That being said sound is subjective, not everyone prioritizes that type of sound. The Paradigm Founders bring something different to the table, while still providing an amazing sound of their own. I think I need to bring the 40B's down to your placed and then we can see how the Founder signature sounds in your room and whether or not you prefer it.
@Johnnytrades101
@Johnnytrades101 2 года назад
@Spec Of Tech For sure, hearing speakers in one's own surroundings is the best. Rooms are all different, correction helps but still the room is a big thing. Are we being too picky and missing the whole point of just sitting back and enjoying block buster movies and our favorite music?

As a paradigm fanatic & user, they are a beautiful fantastic pair of speakers. I'm using my Rotel A12 as a preamp while using a late 70's Hitachi HMA-7500 Power Amplifier to drive them. They do match up well, despite being a Frankenstein setup. My 1st time hearing the Founders was the 120H matched to the Anthem STR Intergrated Amplifier, it blew me away, better than the signature series. For Bookshelves they do fill the room nicely.

Good review and nice room. The way you describe these speakers sounds similar to the Buchardt S400 MKII - however I've seen the measurements. The Founder series will be better at lower volumes since it has a curved response, with more sparkle up top and a bass bump. Whereas, the S400 MKII will do better at higher volumes since it has a flatter response. Neither have glaring issues in the response, and both seem very well designed for their intended goals.

Thank you! I would love to get my hands on a pair of the S400 MKII to compare them to my 40B's. I was coming from the Legacy Audio Focus SE towers and Studio HD bookies right before getting the Founders. I think what really emphasized the warmth of them is that the Legacy are a very cool sound. I have contacted Mads at Buchardt, but he wasn't willing to send a pair for review, and I certainly can't buy everything I review. Maybe one day a friend of mine will get the Buchardts and I could compare them.

Interesting that you said it's a warm midrange as James Larson reviewed it and said it has a raised treble above 7khz and it was natural in the midrange which lines up with his measurements. Definitely a lot of valid reason for why you each heard different things (room, room acoustics, setup, equipment, and preference to name a few). These I think would be perfect for me, as the main draw for me is their higher sensitivity at the cost of bass being thx standard escentially which is a tradeoff i wish more manufacturers made. Still need to listen to them but they're higher up on the my list.
@SpecOfTech
@SpecOfTech 2 года назад
That is really interesting. My reference for that statement was the Legacy Audio Focus SE, the Founders were noticeably warmer than them. I considered the Legacy's to be flat and clinical. If the Founders are raised above 7KHZ, I don't imagine the Focus SE are flat, because they were noticeably brighter than the Founders. There is definitely a difference between our rooms, because I hear the opposite, I find the treble smooth and the mids warm. Granted my room is not treated yet, although there is plenty of diffusion and absorption with my room as is, not to mention no back wall for reflections, it will still benefit greatly from proper treatment. Once I get my room treated, I am curious to see how it changes the sound of these speakers. When you go listen to them, I am interested to hear your thoughts, feel free to reach out and let me know what you think.

I would say the Founder are a little on the warmer side of things. They are smooth and rich. I can't really compare them to the Studio series because I have not heard them personally. I was told that the Founders are sort of nipping at the heals of the Persona line. I heard that from the dealer so take it with a grain of salt.

@@mr.victor7886 my friend has the studio 20 v1 and i got founder 80f. the founders have a VERY CLEAR SOUND, the bowers and wilkinz are much more analytical than founder series.founder 80f is more nuetral not really warm and it is silky. i compared founder in total, studio 20 which i thought was much less clear and the difference between founder and studio was comparable to that of studio vs like monitor 7 v3. the studio much clearer than the monitor v3. then compared to the klipsch rp 8000 the sound not as bright and the founder was silky compared to the klipsch and the bowers and wilkinz 704 s2 were harsh and lacked bass.founders speakers also have very tight bass if that matters. also their dispersion is second to none. no other speaker has dispersion that is any where near founder. founder is so disperse i think a center speaker is a waste unless you are in a very large room it is incredibly easy to pin point sound. i never got to hear studio 100 v5 but i do that founder incredible and drop dead if you were not 120 percent happy. amzing dispersion clarity and tight bass. very clear withought sounding harsh like bowers and wilkinz. also the port is on the bottom of the speaker so accoustics do not matter as much. i think finding a better sounding speaker would be very difficult especailly at this price point.so i guess it depends on how studio v1 compares to v5 which i do not know but if v5 sounds similar to v1 then i think you should buy founder . you could also demo first to see but i had the monitor 6000 se and never demod first and just bought 80f for shits and totally fell in love and founder is definitly endgame material. message if you have anymore questions

Very nice looking speakers, but a 2 way 6 inch woofer, 1 inch tweeter for $2,200! Just a bit to pricey for me. Wish I could turn back time to the late 70's during the receiver wars. Rock solid builds for a more affordable price and great sound.Today's audio is just to ridiculously over priced.

Haha, yeah they aren't cheap unfortunately. There are some great budget friendly options out there still like Elac, SVS and Warfedale.
@fishbone08070
@fishbone08070 2 года назад
@@SpecOfTech I do own Elac speakers, they sound good, but can't compare to a 3-way speaker sporting 12 inch woofers. There was no need for sub-woofers back then, and in my opinion are much better sounding speakers. I'm not willing to spend a small fortune to get today's equivalent.

@@fishbone08070 there was always a need for subwoofers due to the physics of bass in rooms - we just had very little knowledge of it and we didn't have proper measuring equipment. Now we can measure at home, see where the bass problems are, and address them with subwoofers.

Hi Barrett, Did you ever do a full review on the 120H's ? How do these compare to the Legacy's? You were pretty smitten with the finish and sound of the Legacy's are these as good? How come you always wear a hat?
@SpecOfTech
@SpecOfTech 2 года назад
I am currently working on the 120H review, it will be released this Saturday if all goes according to plan. It looks like there is some interest in a direct comparison between the 2, so I might make that video in the future. They are 2 very different sounds though. The Legacy were clinical, detailed and transparent. The 120H are still quite detailed, but warm with a smoother top end. I find the Founders to be a bit more musical because of their warmth and smooth treble in room, it gives them a little more accurate tonality IMO. The Legacy sound amazing though, incredibly clear, so much detail in the music. I do find because they are so clinical and transparent it almost gives an unrealistic sound to music. I wear a hat because I like wearing hats lol🤷‍♂.
