Really interesting with the inclusion of the physicality of what happens to the various joints. I also use a lot of talk of gravity when teaching too, although do get young pupils to stroke the keys to produce a soft sound, but always with a relaxed and light arm. One thing I no longer use though, is the hand around the knee cap, as find it still can create some tension. I now simply get the pupil to drop their arms down by their sides, totally relaxed arms, then place over the keys. This, I find, finds the natural position for their hand at the "at rest" position and also relaxes the whole arm... I have small hands, and placing round knee caps makes them rather tight! A thought from me, anyway! Great to see you go into a lot of depth; not enough of that on RU-vid!

Thanks for the good advice! Focussing on the MCP (first) joint doing it’s job properly and keeping the DIP and PIP joint quiet immediately improved my touch and tone and sense of control. I guess this is because the direction of the movement of the MCP joint is in more or less in the same direction as the movement of the key, and therefore more efficient, from a mechanical point of view? Maybe Glenn Gould did his tapping on the first joint exercice, to get the feeling of this joint moving?

Activating the Lumbrical muscles of the hand is my goal of every warmup! When only using my distal joints like you mentioned at the first half of the video, it becomes impossible to play without strain and tension.

Although the information you are explaining is probably very useful you should distill what you have to say so that viewers remain interested without nodding off. It's clear that you know your subject well but it is presented in a somewhat rambling, disorganized fashion. The points you want to share should be worked out concisely before the camera is turned on. Truly, I am attempting to be helpful and mean no disrespect. Thank you for taking the time to prepare and share this tutorial.
