Most EPIC chord progression on guitar: Mixolydian

In my mind, there isn't any other chord progression that is stronger, more jam-worthy, and epic in rock music than the classic Mixolydian chord sequence that is found in songs like Sweet Child O' Mine, Hey Jude, Sympathy for the Devil, and Sweet Home Alabama.
So what did Guns n Roses, the Beatles, the Stones, and Lynrd Skynrd have in common? It's this incredible and unique chord sequence that starts on a major chord, then goes down a whole step.
You'll learn how these chord progressions were created, how to identify them in songs, and how to create great guitar solos using both Major Pentatonic and Minor Pentatonic.

Couple of things worth mentioning while explaining modal scales: 1. The notes that are flattened or sharpened compared with the major scale of the root note of the mode. e.g. in this context, the major scale (G major) with the flattened 7th (b7) gives the G mixolydian scale. 2. The importance of practicing the modes starting with the same root note. e.g. practicing G Ionian, G Dorian, G Mixolydian starting at the same root note on the fretboard. It not only gives the reference from the major scale, but also serves as a ear training method to understand or differentiate between the sound/character of each mode. In the end, it’s all about the ear‘s perception than anything else!

Good Morning Blue! You're one of my favorite instructors on YT! I have quite a few, and IMO you're in very good company.. too many to mention, but they're all very good! I'd be guessing that some of them are on your viewing list, as well. I really appreciate your no-nonsense, logical approach and that you're thorough and don't assume your audience/student knows what you're talking about, but EXPLAIN the concepts, and then demonstrate them. A positive trait of an effective teacher! ☮

Hey Blue! Thanx a lot for your great lessons! Really a way to understand the neck in an easy way! I don't get the point anyway of this lesson (mabe i just don't understand the need of modes): Why are we talking about the mixolydian mode of D and not just about a song in the key of G which is simply starting on a D chord?
@GuitarLessonsVancouver
@GuitarLessonsVancouver 3 месяца назад
When you make D sound like the home of the key instead of G, it tricks our ears/brain into hearing it differently. In the key of G, the G chord sounds like home and all the other chords are a certain interval from there. But with D Mixolydian, the D chord is home and all the chords are at different intervals. There is less resolve and it sounds like it could go on forever. Once you get used to hearing it that way, you won't want to go back to thinking of it as G Major 😀
@ddugan64
@ddugan64 Год назад
I think modal thinking over complicates things. It's the 5,4,1 of C Major
@GuitarLessonsVancouver
@GuitarLessonsVancouver Год назад
You can think of it that way, but the resolve is on a different chord, and also a different degree of the scale, so if you're soloing, just need to remember where the root of the key is, which in your example is not C, but G. You get different results with the same chords.
@6stringstandard136
@6stringstandard136 Год назад
Maybe it's just me that is confused., so bear with me. In the early part of the video you talked about the flattened 7th played as a major tipping you off to the Mixolydian mode. Toward the end you talked about focusing on the 5th of the scale to create the Mixolydian mode, but not about flattening the 7th. I'm sure I am missing something here but would appreciate a bit more on this. Thanks.
@GuitarLessonsVancouver
@GuitarLessonsVancouver Год назад
Yeah that's a little complicated to explain in a comment, but take the major scale, restart from the fifth degree. That is now the new I chord. If that's now the I chord, you will now have a VII chord that is a whole step down. For example, from G major, take the fifth degree, which is D. Now call D a I chord and make it "home." What's the VII in relation to D? That's a C. So you now have a whole step down from the new root, D --> C. I think that drawing in the video shows this better though 😀
@cuteasxtreme
@cuteasxtreme Год назад
When you start at the 5th of Major and play from there you’ll notice that you play Mixolydian (flat 7th)
@6stringstandard136
@6stringstandard136 Год назад
@@cuteasxtreme That's what I was thinking but when he showed it still as an F# I was confused. The Mixolydian is basically the major scale with a flattened 7th with a focus on the 5th of the scale. Thinking about it that way makes sense to me. To each their own I guess.
@arseniy1329
@arseniy1329 Год назад
@@6stringstandard136 I’m not sure if this will help you, but it does for me. Forget about the fifth degree thing, just think mixolydian is a major scale with a flat 7. Now, it turns out that when you take a major scale, and set the fifth note in that scale as the root, and just play the original scale from that new root it makes a mixolydian scale. Just remember there is not really a focus on the fifth, the fifth is the root, so in fact it’s just 1 now, it’s the note/chord that’s meant to feel like home
@JohnCarter20

Hi Blue, so if G-F-C is I-bVII-IV in mixolydian mode, then what mode might a D-A-G-A progression be in? That's the opening chord progression to ELO's "Do Ya". Would that just be a I-IV-V-IV progression? Or is it some mode that I don't know? The "A" chord seems to be home, to my ear, but the D could also be. Could someone help me sort this out? Thanks :-)
@GuitarLessonsVancouver
@GuitarLessonsVancouver 10 месяцев назад
Just had a listen, I think it is key of D, but i suppose one could argue it's A Mixolydian if it felt like the A was the tonic (resolve). Lots of songs like that. ACDC style woukd be A D and G over and over but A being the tonic. Sometimes it's ambiguous. In the case of the ELO song the A is played lower in range than the others, so maybe that's why it sounds like resolve to you. But I'm hearing D as I myself 😀
