The difference is that they can’t play them on the same level as the virtuosos, even with the easy pieces. That’s not a knock on their ability at all, as they are already highly skilled professional musicians. It’s just that violin soloists are totally different beasts, they are the great masters as twoset puts it.
@simplytwosetter
@simplytwosetter 2 года назад
@@vt4979 I agree. I'm still impressed that they can play it, and I believe with a lot of practice, they can reach a higher level. But I do agree that they still have a long way to go (or probably impossible) to reach many virtuosos' level. But still, to me, they are amazing already.
@damshek

Paganini goes from "impossible" to "doable" surprisingly quickly, once you start practicing it seriously. There's a huge drop in difficulty once you start cracking all his little tricks, which you inevitably will if you throw enough "grind hours" at it. But Bach, Tchaikovsky, etc., on the other hand... some of the passages in those pieces just never sit well, even if you practice for a lifetime. They are never not hard to get to sound right. My personal nemesis currently is the 3rd Bach solo sonata, that thing is just borderline abusive.

@diadrite
@diadrite 2 года назад
I think I can understand that actually, even though I don't think I've sank enough 'grind hours' myself just yet. Paganini's very difficult to a point but once you're comfortable enough with upbow staccato, spicatto, high positions, thirds, tenths, and fingered octaves, I'd imagine you can basically play all 24 caprices with some practice. (Although I'd argue the God Save the King variations would be a massive undertaking no matter what.) But then there's some passages from less violinistic composers that are just plain uncomfortable and they'll never get more comfortable. You just have to grit your teeth and fight through the pain.
@manunited1235
@manunited1235 2 года назад
So you’re saying bach’s violin pieces are overall harder to play than Paganini’s?
@damshek
@damshek 2 года назад
@@manunited1235 My best analogy is that learning Paganini is like learning to juggle, looks impossible at first, then becomes second nature. While playing Bach solo pieces is like learning chess. It never becomes really easy, because there's so much depth and new possibilities at every step. And on top of that, yes, there are some technical moments in Bach solo violin pieces, especially the fugues, especially with a modern violin and bow, that can make a lot of Paganini seem like a breeze. Slow chords where you have to carry multiple voices by connecting notes in midair, hoping it makes sense to the listener, and not crunch any of them, and stay in tune... I'll take tenths and left hand pizz anyday for easiness tbh.

I agree with most of them but, in my opinion, Devil's Trills Sonata should definitely be on Hard-Hard level because of some of the later-er parts. Reasons - *Firstly, it lasts a good more than 15 minutes. *It requires another level of musicality. *In the 4th movement, the violinist has to do trills while simultaneously playing arpeggiated triads. *And then there's the cadenza. Note- It is just my personal opinion.

Ernst was not jealous of Paganini, on the contrary! There is a story: Paganini had been performing many concerts around Europe, and Ernst was following him everywhere he went, he even stayed in hotel rooms right next to Paganini's, trying to learn his "secrets", but rarely did Paganini practice during his stays. Later, at a concert that Paganini attended, Ernst played Nel Cor Piu Non Mi Sento with "accuracy that shocked the audience and Paganini". At the time of that concert, the piece was not published yet, so Ernst would have had to learn it by ear from Paganini's concerts.

For me for devil's trill I really like Ray For Bach, Brahms, Sibelius Hilary For Tchaikovsky it's gotta be Perlman For Tzigane, Ernst and Ysaye Vengerov For Paganini Augustin for sure For Shostakovich it's Khachatryan For Kreutzer it's definitely Mutter

Love the pool of pieces you guys selected! I played Tzigane and Chaconne for my senior recital in high school, but haven't really played consistently after that. Your recent videos have encouraged me to start playing again after 15 years. It's harder now with young kids, but just go through the first page of Ysaye (trying not to get depressed from the Chloe recording though).

@@dehanbadenhorst1398 yeah but i think its in hard, because to play nearly any piece cleanly is hard, as they stated "to play it like vengerov, hilary or heifetz or any great violinist is all like god tier" (butchered what they said). The energy of 14:20 talking about how they got killed so hard by Chloe that it made them lose the ability to play out of sheer awe. Yeah, I think you haven't lived as a person until you have felt that feeling when you meet someone in your "field" that just warps your own bubble of reality. Combination of jealously, pride(that they are in the same "field" as you) and sheer respect. Truly a cluster of strong feelings. XD

It's a fictional character with god-like qualities. He represents the ultimate goal, what every musician wish they could be. For example he can perform the hardest pieces in the world with his eyes closed, play the violin and the piano at the same time, practice 40 hours a day (despite the fact there is only 24 hours in a day), etc... If you need help to know and understand the memes / inside jokes in the videos, you can check the playlist "TwoSet - Origin of the memes" on my channel. Bruch violin concerto was the piece I was practicing when I was at my best, and it was super hard. Double stops are hard, chromatic scales are hard, just the first page took me ages to get through. But I guess in the grander scheme of things it's just 'medium'. Consider me humbled.

Does no one here realize what the last few minutes of this video are about? They’re talking about an impromptu performance by Chloe Chua of the Ysaye. They make her out to be totally goddess-like. As much as musicians love to heap praise on each other, it’s very rare to see it expressed at such a giddy, hysterical matter. Can’t wait til she begins to tour.
