Congratulations!!!! Good luck with motherhood. Discovered your work last night, as I'm a cancer patient researching for a post grad study, what makes people fake cancer or feel envious of cancer patients.... (This interest falls slightly outside of Munchausen/factitious disorders, although Munchausen-by-internet seems to sit on the borderline with malingering: where cancer is exaggerated or faked to have social capital.) Thank you for your work, and good luck with being a mother!!

Stopped at 20.00 -- That poor little girl. I'm a 40 year old woman, who is having to write my own "end of life plan", and have counselling for being terminal.... And I've had relatives pass from cancer, I know what awaits me... I'm dreading it. I've got diazepam for panic attacks, have medical milkshakes for food..... And it is terrifying thinking about what my body will do as it shuts down and I'll be conscious throughout. This little girl, at only age 7 or so -- she was facing all the things I am now: but she was thinking they're real when they weren't for her. And her mother loves the attention and excitement from it. How could anyone do that to anyone else (let alone their own child).... The mental anguish that little girl would have gone through... Alongside the huge disorientation from (what sounds like benzos, or sedatives, or alcohol)...... That little girl must have been distraught. 😨😨😨😢😢😢😢

I think the school should be given so much credit for flagging out this case to the authorities when they just had suspicions. We have seen way too many cases where so many people could have done something to help a child in trouble or distress and they didn’t.

As an educator, we came across one case of Munchausen by proxy and reported our suspicions to the authorities. As soon as she felt that she was under the spotlight, the mother vanished, leaving both her children and her husband who, it became very quickly apparent, knew absolutely nothing of his wife's deception at all. He knew only what she told him. It was heart-breaking to see his distress as he tried to come to terms with the shock of her disappearance and as he tried to make sense of what had been happening to his children. He was a hard-working father who spent many hours providing for his family and his children meant the world to him. Once she had gone, the children thrived and the change in them was almost immediate. This further convinced the father that she had been doing something terrible to them and we had many times when he would come in to ask a question and end up in tears. It really broke him. I was the lead in child protection for several years and have had to deal with a few cases that are just heart-breaking. I will never understand how someone can ill treat a child.

As a parent who has lost a little girl to brain cancer, this sickens me. My little one was diagnosed the week of her 7th birthday. She passed away 2 months after turning 9. It was 100% her decision if she wanted to shave her head at any point. Because she’s a girl, she waited until she literally only had a few whispy hairs left. Then we all shaved our heads. Me included. Which made her feel a little better. We NEVER treated her like this, and she WAS sick. I feel for this poor girl who had to go thru this. Sending love her way💚💚💚

My grandma thrived when my mother was dying from cancer. She “adopted” us (really became our guardian so she could get money from the government), and any time anyone would ask about us she’d go into this savior complex. But she was really abusive behind closed doors. It’s insane how parents can be happy about their child having an illness - fake or real.

A PSA: I'm a cancer mom, and I worry sometimes that people think I've faked my daughter's cancer because she has a thick, full head of shoulder-length hair! She was bald during the intensive part of her treatment. Her hair started growing back in the maintenance phase of treatment, which is common. Her chemo dose is low enough that it hasn't been causing any hair loss. (ironically she has the thickest hair of all my kids right now!) But a child can definitely grow hair during their cancer treatment, so don't let that alone make you skeptical of other families you may be aware of. You would never know that my strong, energetic daughter was a Leukemia patient unless we told you.
@goldraysalvageii

I have cancer and before I looked sick, my hair was down to my waist. I shaved it before my Red Devil for wig-makers to make a cancer kid a wig. I was accused of faking it. No one's saying that now though! People who think you are lying are not the kind of people you need in your life. Keep the supportive people around and let the other ones go on their own path. You and your daughter deserve only good people in your lives. God bless your daughter. I hope she stays cancer free for the rest of her days.

I agree. The fact that the mother said she was trying to get her husband to stay with her tells me unequivocally that he REALLY didn’t know 👌🏻 All that money was spent on her. I’ve got a psych degree, and I’ve seen so many similar cases where the husbands/partners really don’t know, because who would ever expect their partner to make something up like that? 😭 They’re usually also working most of the time and given reasonable excuses as to why they won’t allow them to come to appointments eg. “I don’t want you to see me hooked up to machines, throwing up and in pain. It makes me feel worse”. I truly believe he was duped as much as everyone else, but I believe the grandmother was aware of it. Where did they go for the appointments she said she went to? 😂 She clearly never went anywhere medical because the appointments didn’t exist. She clearly benefitted from some of that money imo.

I believe Hannah’s father. As a wife and stay at home mother to 3 children, my husband rarely attends medical appointments. Those typically take place during the work day, and I just handle everything related to that (transportation, any Rx filling, etc). Additionally, as a healthcare provider, my account of any issues generally isn’t questioned by him. I can absolutely see how a hard working man could be duped in this way. It’s also important to recognize this “only” went on for 9 months, not years. Hannah’s mom could easily keep this up for months without him knowing.

I’m from Springfield, Ohio.. super close to Urbana.. and my mom hired “Teresa Millbrandt” at her local eye glasses store to be a sales associate and Teresa won everyone over and got so much support with her story about her daughter who died of cancer, and how she now raised money for children with cancer. Several people donated to Teresa, customers would request her so she would get the commission on the sales and one thing lead to another and my mom found out her real name was Terri Millibrandt and everything she did. I remember her telling us about how shocked she was and needing to fire her. Terri literally moved 10 miles over and is still scamming people and was just charged with foraging prescriptions. I wonder what her mom was planning to do to her when those few weeks were up. There needs to be more awareness about these types of possibilities for children to be able to find and ask for help where they can, while stuck living in this kind of home life. I had a pretty intense heart condition as a child and understand how "different" you can feel being a sick child. As a child who was sick and also now as a mom I don't understand how anyone would put this extra trauma onto their own child. So happy to welcome you and your husband to the parents club I hope you're savoring every moment 💜

As someone who has done chemotherapy treatment this mother makes me sick & it's a mockery of those who have suffered.

i love seeing the resilience of some people who've been through tough things! And who go on to help others and have kids, it's so wonderful. I read a book called Rose Gold, which is fictional, but I believe was based mostly on the Gypsy Rose Blanchard case, and she got absolutely DELICIOUS revenge, it was a great book. But seeing someone in real life not holding grudges and just succeeding is so much more satisfying and beautiful.

I also just recently covered the Gypsy Rose & Deedee Blanchard story and these cases are so devastating - these kids have their childhood stolen away from them, or worse, even their lives. I feel like more people should know about Manchausen by Proxy because this could help victims. Thank you for explaining the nature of this disorder, Kendall! And congratulations on your beautiful baby girl

When I first heard about this story years ago. It broke my heart and made me sick to my stomach. To think a parent could do this to their own child! Like as a Mother. I just couldn’t imagine. Smh! Peace and blessings to Hannah, the family, and all that was affected by this. Ps- 🎉🎉🎉congrats 🎉🎉🎉on the baby!! She’s adorable! You’re going to love this journey called Motherhood!!!

I am glad that Hannah has survived this tragic and sickening situation. That she is still here, living and striving with her own life and family. I will never understand this disease and how one can be okay with causing their child's sickness. Thank goodness Hannah has the support of her dad, and loved ones, and has grown close through all these years, which is such a beautiful thing. Thank you Kendall for sharing stories like these that increase the awareness of this sickening disease.

These cases are so hard for me as I went through something similar. My mom is a pathological lying narcissist. I was told I had leukemia when I was younger supposedly around 4. Around 9 she would tell people about it and that I was in remission. I never remember going to the Dr or any of this. No one in my family knew about this or was ever told. As I got older I did more digging and couldn't find anything about my supposed leukemia. I grew up terrified that this could come back at any point and kill me. I don't tell people about this because I don't want those sympathetic looks, I grew up with those looks all the time. I'm a mom now and can't even fathom saying this about my kids. Who would want their kid sick?! I worry enough when my kids get a cold. Some parents shouldn't be parents. I'm grateful to be alive but my mom shouldn't have had kids. Edit: I'm grateful it didn't go too far. i.e ports, surgery, shaved head.

I lived in urban and I remember this happening and from what I remember Robert was always working and Terri was always shopping I remember my aunt saying that I can’t believe Terri is always at the salon getting something done when her daughter is so sick and that she gets so mad when Robert is not working and doing what she wants it should be able there daughter I ended up moving back in with my grandma before the truth came out but was shocked when it did come out I just thought my aunt was jealous of the Terri for some reason but I’m glad Hannah is doing so much better and that her dad and her have a good relationship

As a Mother, all I want for is my children to be healthy and happy. To have that, really is priceless. To go out of your way to act like or even make your child sick on purpose is a mental illness I will never understand. Child abuse at it's finest.

I'm worried what Terri's plan would have been had they not been caught. She said her daughter had a few weeks left to live. Would she have been like "It's a miracle!" or done something worse?

My aunt has munchausen and Munchausen by proxy. She doesn't make herself or kids sick but she doesn't read about illnesses online and decides either her or 1 of the kids has it. Then she doctor shops until she gets the outcome/diagnosis she wants. It makes me so angry but unfortunately it's a difficult diagnosis to prove. She's been able to do it for years. I don't believe Robert knew because people with this condition are quite good at hiding things from those close to them. I've seen it, not to mention it is really hard to prove.

I have 3 children and I thought I was totally done having kids. However, the universe heard that and said “not so fast”, and I found out that I am pregnant with my 4th. I have been anxious, scared, overwhelmed, and depressed ever since I found out. But watching you go through your pregnancy has helped me to be okay with the idea.

I only had one child. I had 12 days to process I was going to be a mom. I raised her and never looked back. I knew in my gut God sent her because I needed her. My mom had offer to raise her and I told her no. I knew I wouldn't be able to live with myself knowing I gave away my kid. I regret nothing, had I known from the beginning I would have kept he regardless. We all go thru unexpected things but that child in your belly will love you forever. Good luck mama. I'm cheering for you.

What a tragic story but what an amazing young woman Hannah has become despite what she went through. As a childhood cancer survivor myself, I cannot imagine someone doing this to their child. So heartbreaking. One thing was amiss for me was the comment about the hair loss/regrowth. I lost all of my hair during chemo and it would grow back between treatments but it didn’t grow back in patches. And when it did grow back after treatment was completed, it grew back all over and not in patches. This was typical of most survivors I know. But I’m glad they acted on their suspicions and got her out!
