Always used this ball on semi rims and it works great. Acid wash your aluminum first and use a VOC toothpaste type polish like Unilume and it works great in tight spots. You could polish that box easily with a normal foam buffing pad. This ball isn't made for a flat surface like this but try to polish a semi truck tire with a normal buffer once and you will quickly see where this product comes in handy!
What he doesn't realize: we aren't dumb. What he said: " I've been detailing a long time" What he seems to have never done: wet sanding from 800 to 2500 grit
I've used Mothers on Mag wheels, chrome reverse rim, bumpers AND Diamond plate with excellent results on all of them. First thing I noticed, you need to use a lot more paste. And you CANNOT allow the paste dry on the surface. Ever. Note: I also use Mothers to polish my stainless steel revolvers to a mirror finish. Works like magic. Not kidding.
Dude. Sir. I wish you would post a video on them pistols albeit theyre sweet! My grandad has a colt snub nose 38 he sleeps under that was his dads when he owned a grocery store here in fort worth and story goes he shot a guy that robbed them there later to find out the guy was a family friend. Sad but it belonging to my great grandfather id love to polish it. But i wonder if its nickel coated?
Nice, if it’s good enough for a stainless frame can’t argue with that. I’ve only ever use it on hand sanded stripped factory alloys which are soft metal.
@@erod4489 believe it or not, I’ve heard a quality toilet paper will clean up a nickel plated gun nicely. Like it’s abrasive enough when dry to do the job but not remove the plating
Actually foam works pretty good for polishing diamond plate. A step you could’ve done to make this job easier was to use a Brillo pad before you ever started polishing. This would’ve been like wet sanding the toolbox. Also instead of paste wax us a liquid, metal specific polish. White diamond metal polish works great for applications like this. Combine the Brillo with the white diamond metal polish and it will look brand new.
The Powerball was not created to polish oxidized diamond plate its for rims that aren't totally oxidized. You need a airway polishing wheel on a grinder running at about 5000 rpm's to actually polish oxidized aluminum especially diamond plate. Like they say you need to use the right tool to do the job right
Or blue scotch bright pad on a dotco then hand polish with white pad followed by 4000grit paper by hand for mirror finish. I work in aviation aluminium is my bread and butter.
Sam Rothstein and that's my fault..lol It was a review of a product that doesn't work and that could be helpful for someone thinking about buying it and wasting their money which is probably more precious than your two minutes:) Dude it's not all about you..lol
Most incomplete ventures are poor investments... You watched less than 30% of the video... Go figure that you were disappointed Also, didn’t you waste a minimum of 25% more of your precious time by staying to leave the comment? I have a feeling you have countless bad investments in your future 😂😂😂
So, if they did tell you what RPM to use, how the hell would you know what RPM you're using anyway? I've never seen a cordless drill that reported what RPM you're working at.
and you can use common sense , or your best judgement on how many rpm to use. does you drill have an rpm gauge ??? so if they told you an rpm range, how fast would you know anyway.
"Slow" is just their way to CYA. The cordless drill is suggested because most idiots can't polish with a regular drill! For Diamond plate, you need to polish in several directions.
I. Use morhers. Ball with extension -.WITH WHITE DIAMOND POLISH - and you don't start polishing the minute you put it on there you let it kind of haze over for a bit maybe about a minute or two otherwise you're just going to sit there and keep polishing away till it finally dries up so. Hit it with that white diamond and that ball after it sat for a minute or two on the surface it goes right over it takes it right off and leaves it. High shine....
I’ve used the power ball on all the chrome on my truck. I get good results considering I’m the average car guy who may use it 3-4 times a year. You the professional I wouldn’t recommend it. You’d probably use it 3-4 times a week and it wouldn’t last. Using a drill you just have to figure out the rpm’s and get the feel for it. There’s always a big difference from consumer and professional products. Thanks for your video I do enjoy watching a pro detailer and use what I learn on my cars.
I've also come across this very same problem. Just you you tested, its not good on diamond plate. And I'm not crazy about the Mothers brand as well as the others. For this type of job, I usually do it by hand and it does take time doing it by hand. However try the White Diamond detail products which I've just started using myself and it is by far the best product I've ever used! It instantly takes away the heavy oxidation of metal and polishes at the same time. Its unbelievable how good it works. The metal polish is also usable on many other forms and does a great job.
The directions say use water, try using water with it and out of direct sunlight. Also would help if the PowerBall was clean. I've used it before and it works great. Before polishing metal or anything for that matter, you should wash the surface and clean it metal cleaner. Take the time to prep before you polish
Hey Scott, great review (as are all your reviews) Here's a suggestion, mail that piece of crap back to Mothers head office with a note stating you just reviewed it on RU-vid! Let us know the outcome!
Hey Scott great video. Is it possible you could make a video demonstrating how you would actually polish diamond plate? I have a few firetrucks that I need to do!
Maybe it was your first time using an electric drill. How many rpms were you using at your slow speed; how many at your high speeds. What did you not understand about applying the Mother's liberally? Why did you not move the ball around to get into the obvious crevices in the diamond plate? Please post the name of the device that gives you the precise speed of your electric drill while you are using it, and the place where we can buy that device. I don't get out much; so that I can learn more about detailing technique, please explain how knowing your exact drill or Dual Action Polisher speed has helped you hone your techniques and get better results in your auto detailing business?
Thank you, I was given a cone shaped thing like that to do some cleaning on an aluminum travel trailer. It turned the surface black and chunks of the cone were flying off. I thought it was just me.
The foam ball is best used on a smooth surface and is awesome on parts such as a fender cover with holes and curves. I used a foam of on my diamond plate and it also came apart and it was a new pad. I decided to do it all with a wool buff pad and that worked however it would not polish it out. I am about to got to auto zone to see what the offer to polish chrome after I clean it with chemicals and the wool buffer. Those ridges are way to hard for foam
Thanks for taking the time. Never used the full sized Powerball, I like the Flitz Ball, but I prefer a rotary and wool for polishing large surfaces like truck boxes. But I do have and use a few of the Powercone 360 version. Very well made and durable with a nice firm core support, works really well used behind the Flitz ball for small areas, wheel lips, grills, etc. For being soft foam, they hold up well if you don't use them dry. They need to be primed first, makes a *big* difference in durability. I use detail spray, or Hyper Polish, and massage/squeeze it in a bit, then you're good to go! 👍👌✌
I get what you are saying but by the same token the powerball and power cone were designed for work in tight spaces wheels etc where your would have carpal tunnel if you tried to polish by hand Flitz makes a much better ball for the same process, as for doing diamond plate on large flat areas use a wool bonnet and let it rip! with your favorite polish I tend to like the White Diamond brand. anyways just my 2 cents your mileage may vary have a great day
First off you skipped all the steps of alluminimum polishing and went straight to the polishing step. The mothered powerball/cone works great as a polishing pad. Witch is what it is. It's not a one all do all product. See people these are the reviews you have to watch out for. He had problems cause of his mistakes not cause of the product.
So what would you suggest to use? I'm genuinely interested because I've been polishing diamond plate on a fire truck for the last 5+ years and am trying to find some solution that's more efficient and better quality
I bought one to polish my rims and didn't even last a minute before the ball began to fall apart. I just used my buffer and a wool pad since my design rims allowed for it.
it works if you take your time , way to fast with the drill is the reason the ball is tearing on the checker plate and work with the checker not against it
I had one of those Mother's Powerballs about 15 years ago and tried to polish my diamond-plate tool box. It did a horrible job and pretty much shredded foam constantly.. The sweet point for it is in the trash can. That thing truly sucks. The Mother's polish is great, but the Powerball is garbage. Try the Flitz Ball with Mother's Polish for great results.
This is kinda an unfair review of the product.... With any type of polishing tool like this where it has flap-like structure to it or pieces hanging from the polisher (in this case all the valleys and stuff between the foam) you need to keep the speed lower and use ALOT more product. These tools are designed to help you get around any valleys of an area but as you said it is better for smoother surfaces, the reason it is a ball-like design with flaps is to give you more surface area between cleanings for when it clogs up (Rotate the angle of it to let you get a fresh section), hence why you need to LIBERALLY use product. LIBERALLY meaning ALOT of product because THERE IS MORE SURFACE AREA than with a normal buffing pad. If you use a normal flat buffing pad and use only about 30% of the amount of product needed (like you did in this video to the power ball) you are gonna rip the shit out of the flat pad too, especially on diamond plating... So really this video is not a review of a product, it's a showcase of someone not knowing how to use a product and then proceeding to bitch about it.
Use a polishing wheel on an arbor. Run it at max rpm with lots of aluminum polish of your choice, dont let it dry out. Thousands of truck detailers cant be wrong.
Diamond plate destroys the crap out of them lol. Only reason I know is because I’ve destroyed 3 of them already at work 😂. The PowerBalls work great though for sure! The Mothers Mag Polish doesn’t work very well compared to Renegade Rebel Red at least to me
I see your point with the diamond plate I've always thought that I never really tried it I wasn't curious about it cuz I thought it was a dumbass idea however on the Harley-Davidson motorcycles or any type of motorcycle you have a lot of areas that that is nearly Flawless on so I would recommend that that does your motorcycle Orr Automotive rims definitely works excellent I almost cannot even unmatch it as far as the quality of it to do it by hand would take forever so it's definitely a Harley-Davidson product
a wool pad and rotary plus a metal polish...you could use a microfiber pad with a DA as well..plus flitz buff ball and flitz metal polish is much better than mothers foam power ball:)..but i think the mothers power ball would be ok for smooth surfaces but on diamond plate tool box it was a horrible fail in my experience
Dallas Paint Correction & Auto Detailing - Using any kind of drill mounted ball or cone would seem like it would take forever compared to a DA or rotary. 👍
Works great but it disintegrated before I finished the job, the reason you start slowly is to keep you from flinging the compound all over the place. This operator has no clue how to do this correctly I hit the areas for a few seconds with liquid polish and then wiped the area with a towel and got a bright finish
You obviously never worked with aluminum diamond plate. you want mirror finish on oxidized aluminum you have to acid wash it first before you even start to polish it. I have 10 dump trucks with aluminum diamond plate boxes and they are all mirror polished would never even think of starting with a polish on them without using an acid wash first. And the mothers power ball works excelent when used right there is no pressure used when polishing. Hate to see your polish job on a painted surface do you even wash first or just polish dirt.
LOL - I tried this exact thing and it was a messy DISASTER! Although, having called and worked with Jim at Mother's over an issue I was having with their HD Trim cleaner he was very helpful and responsive. So In general, I like them, especially their FX synthetic paste "wax". But, the powerball on diamond-plate is a disaster.
Didn't he say at the very beginning there is such an easier way of doing this!!!!! Then why are you whining like a thirteen-year-old girl. A fine example of if you don't like the song you're listening to then change the freaking station!!!!! that's how easy it is change the station man, LET IT GO
I've learned hard way slow is not good it's a polishing ball naught one learned to use it and high speed is good use a good amount of mother's but I prefer diamond I've learned that too
Wow i know im late but this guy needs to get off RU-vid saying he's been detailing for a long time if you have you dont need directions it's pretty self explanatory wow
I've seen the little black crumbs coming off it's ok it's the diamond design and yes it will work I wish I could show you all the testing I've done mother's is to shine a dull look diamond metal cleaner is built to dig out old and polish in one mor e potent stuff autozone auto part store
