It has always been a dream of mine to travel to another country on an adventure bike. Last year my wife and I decided that we wanted to take a trip to Italy and Greece to see Venice, Rome, the Amalfi Coast, Athens, and Santorini. Of course, we saw as many of the historical sites as we could on our way. We saw the canals in Venice, the Colosseum in Rome, the Acropolis in Athens, and the Blue Domes of Santorini. I had to plan a little bit of an adventure along the way. I got the idea to take a motorcycle tour from the podcast episode that we recorded with Simon Cudby. He had recently returned from a trip to Greece where he did a tour with Mythical Routes who organizes trips all across Greece and combines motorcycle tours with the history and culture of the Greek people. I decided that I couldn't pass up the opportunity while we were in Greece to rent a motorcycle and see the countryside. We rented a GS1200 Adventure bike from the local BMW dealer that also organized adventure touring trips as well. We rode through Athens and then took the coastline to Nafplion stopping by the Ancient Theatre at the Asclepieion of Epidaurus to see the ruins and historical artifacts there. We had been on the bike for nearly four hours so we grabbed lunch in Nafplion and then headed back. What I didn't realize is just how powerful the Mediterranean sun is. I foolishly wore a t-shirt without any sunblock in early June and really roasted my arms. We made it back to Athens which I can tell you is a city that feels alive. After navigating the foreign traffic which was a whole story in itself we collapsed in our hotel room happily exhausted from an awesome day of experiencing everything that Greece has to offer.
