Although I realise this review doesn't exactly sell it very well, the motorcycle in this review is for sale:
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/18173431097...
It doesn't help my trade but I will always be totally honest about all the bikes on this channel.

It happens that I did my driving lessons on a GSR 600 and a Hornet 600, depending on which one was available. As I was being more and more confident with my driving skills I started loving the GSR that I really thought of buying one. It's a small beast guys! Still, very versatile and adaptable to any driving condition. I think that's what I like about it the most.

I wish people would stop classing bikes with 100hp or near enough as 'learner' bikes. These bikes are all doing 60 in less than 4s, supercar territory and yet people decide they learner bikes. Even my old CBR400 was fast as fuck if you could ride and that had 60hp. 600cc is not 'learner''. If you're good enough it's all the bike you'll ever need.
@TheLoneTrader
@TheLoneTrader 3 года назад
You are not the first person to make this admittedly good point. I will admit that my reviewing experience was pretty poor at this time and I would have expressed my point a bit better. I still maintain that the GSR is just pitched too much in the middle. It's not sporty enough to be a credible street fighter or sports machine (despite the pretensions of better suspension and brakes) and not useful or soft enough to be an everyday utility bike. If you're just starting out then it'll confuse you and if you're experienced it won't be good enough. There are better bikes for the same money in either direction (Say.. Hornet or Street Triple respectively). Ultimately its all just opinion and your mileage may vary but that's still my opinion a few years later. It's not the worst bike in the world, there are just many better options available. I just wish I'd stated it better on video.
@TheLoneTrader
@TheLoneTrader 3 года назад
Also, I was wrong that they pitched this as an entry middleweight. It was supposed to be sportier alternative to the Bandit.... but I don't think it really passed muster for many more experienced riders because I only ever saw more inexperienced riders on these machines whilst I was trading bikes. Those more inexperienced riders did struggle with it and hence I took a few of these off of people in exchange for more friendly or useful bikes.

@@TheLoneTrader I get what you're saying and I wasn't meaning to be aggressive but it maybe came across a bit that way. I must have watched one too many American videos that day where they seem to think it's 1000cc or nothing even though thenycan't go around a corner. Safe riding.

If you want to get the license for “big” bikes in Sweden. This is about the smallest bike you can use to reach the requirements. So it is a “learner” bike in that case.

My GSR600 is just fine and dandy, with no problems mentioned in the video, but I ride with a pillion most of the time, great bike with 25,000 miles on her, in my eyes recommended for learners and experienced riders alike and trust me I am the experienced rider with 35 years riding all kind of machines, good video though....

I’ve owned one of these bikes for 5 years (Trading it in 2 days though). It was my first bike and I’ve loved owning it. I agree with the throttle twitching however I only find it around 30mph or less, I’ve never had any issues over that speed. I do love the sound though and a spot on review, cheers!

Really awesome review - I am late to find this one. I am a ‘new rider’ and have been riding a Varadero XL125 2009 model for the last, almost two years now. I have been so torn between an obvious choice of a Hornet or the GSR600 for my first big bike - this bike has appealed to me so much more with the looks as well as exhaust position which I love. It’s a shame about the throttle issues but as one of the guys said in comments I just read, I’m sure they have been sorted out now in newer versions.

I've owned this bike for about two years now. And your first impression is pretty spot on. The engine and gearbox is very good, but the suspension is too squishy and not fully adjustable, and the throttle is hopeless (but i must say that it is an easy fix, with a PC and a TPS adjustment, i recomend reading some more on the gsr UK forum for info) other than that i like the bike a lot :) Excellent sound quality and video angles, great review mate

It's nice to hear both sides of the story, most people reviewing their bike's tend to focus on the good points only and miss out flaws because they've learned to ignore them and convince themselves that they have the perfect machine for them and their needs. potential buyers, aren't interested in hearing a biased view of the bike, they want to know all the pro's and con's since anyone of those flaws could be the difference between buying the bike or holding out to get something better and more suitable... I'm considering downsizing from a carbed ZX9r E1 to a smaller, lighter, everyday bike and this was a contender since a mate rave's about his all the time. this review has made me pause for thought, thankyou for your honest opinion sir!
@ZxRx7
@ZxRx7 4 года назад
Don't be too sure. I too own a Zx9r c2, along with Zx10s, R1, Blackbird aso. I recently bought the GSR 600 as my first ever Suzuki, (always avoided the brand), granted I have not taken delivery yet but I did ride it for a whole day and did in excess of 400kms on it. I noticed no on off throttle response, maybe it is because I am used to bigger bikes, but the power delivery never caught me off guard or staggered. On the contrary it was very smooth and thought to myself, this is a bike I can live with every day as I felt it is not ready to kill me at any moment. I loved the straight comfy riding position. The gauge cluster is nice and the engine purrs beautifully. What I am trying to say here is try one before dismissing them. You might be surprised at what people's opinions are and how they do not apply to your riding style.

Pretty much a spot on review with the GSR.I've been riding a GSR600 for 5 years - 5-6 days a week to commute to work. 50-90kms a day. While the throttle response is snatchy at times and always at the wrong moment, after awhile you do become used to it. But for an everyday commuter, the engine is bullet proof, and very reliable, build quialty is surprising good too, plenty of mid range power with a relaxed seating position. I've been riding for over 24 years -and The GSR - while not the best you can find for a commuter, is still quite the underdog even with its flaws.

Appreciate the honesty. A used example for just over 3k is in the crosshairs as my first bike after passing my A-category test. I had my heart set on a SV650 but the one example I found in the right colour is festooned with marks and a cracked front mudguard and still 4.6k... tempted by this as a cheaper alternative. We will see.

@ZxRx7
@ZxRx7 4 года назад
Btw, it is a high revving engine, for smooth cornering you need to be in excess of 8k rpm throughout the corner . It will be smooth when ridin properly. There is no power down under, so that might be what you consider to be jerky. You might be lingering in the rev range that transitions between low and high power. Edit: case in point ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZbSllkJvRws.html

Another great video. Since you asked, I personally would like to see more of the techical stuff, engine type, power delivery rev range, suspension, controls and levers, clusters and your take on that, because all these little things kinda makes the bike what it is. There's a little of these kinds of good quality video reviews on older bikes, or should I say, more accessable bikes, say 95-2004 era, because in reality, all of the modern stuff works great and probably won't break as much, so for those bikes you basically choosing purely just for styling and image, so it's kinda boring to me. That's the problem with Bandits, because in later years they became just another bikes, but older stuff, like 1200 in your first video, still remains interesting. I guess it's simillar to how classic cars makes us feel - we all kinda wan't to own one :) Other than that, audio is good, video is good, angles and framing is good. Keep up the good work.
@TheLoneTrader
@TheLoneTrader 9 лет назад
Kaspars Butlers Thanks for the feedback I really appreciate it. I'm glad you mentioned that there aren't many reviews of the bikes we encounter every day. I buy stuff that interests me so it should certainly keep everything in that 95-2005ish sort of bracket. I definitely agree with you about the technical/ergonomic aspects of the bikes. I think I'll shoot a short section on that before the riding review for each bike. The audio should hopefully improve with time too as I'm looking for solutions to help the mics deal with the louder bikes (both the bandit and gsr overloaded the mics at high speed). Anyway thanks for your support man, I'm fucking stoked by the response to these two vids. More reviews, blogs and (very amateur) workshop vids to come.

Who would consider this a learners' or entry level bike? That's ridiculous. As you mentioned, Suzuki has entry level bikes in their portfolio namely the 650 Bandit or SV650/ Gladius. The GSR has a Supersport Engine and had a mid-class price tag.

I'd have to say that was one of the best used bike reviews I have seen, and I am often a very demanding critic. I hate snarchy modern throttles as they take ALL the fun out of riding. There was just enough info on the other systems likes brakes and supension, given this is not a moto gp bike. However, some info on what it was like incorners would have been better.

I think that what makes the GSR 600 so special is that they are "polivalent". Throttle issues? adjust TPS it will get better. Soft suspension? it is a 9 year old bike sure it is not stiff but at least is some how adjustable. For city driving? never better than a comparable two cilinder because the nature of the engine, but enough to be driven around without a problem and with far better comfort than a SBK. Want to take it to a faster spin, then enjoy the upper 10,000rpms feel up to 14,000rpms. It is a bike usable in many scenarios which make it perfect for a lot of people. Its look is subjetive, a lot of people hate it, a lot doesn't. Thanks for the review!
@TheLoneTrader
@TheLoneTrader 8 лет назад
+aruekca18det Yeah. It's all down to user preference at the end of the day. I personally would go for a Hornet or Fazer 600 at these prices but horses for courses. It wouldn't take much money or effort to get the GSR how I wanted it but I'd rather not spend that money. I know there are quite a few happy owners out there (quite a few have vented their spleen on this comment section lol) and it's great that they like them. Alot people wouldn't like my Bandit 12 but I certainly do!
@aruekca18det
@aruekca18det 8 лет назад
+The Lone Trader True. I was waiting for a current review of this bike. I own one, I'm happy with it. No throttle issues, but I know it is a common problem to it. You know I don't have that much experience (6years) but for me the SV650 or Gladius is a much more dangerous for learners because that bike deliver power so low in rpms and so fast it will wheelie very easy... GSR 600 does not and to get power you really need to goo over 8,000 and a "good learner" will have more space to play with power on the GSR than the SV I think. BTW stock exhaust is quite :P a lot. My advice to you if still have it: put the bike in dealer mode and check TPS adjustment.
@TheLoneTrader
@TheLoneTrader 8 лет назад
+aruekca18det The bike went to a customer quite a while ago. As far as I gather he's pretty happy as he got a fairly good deal on it. I learned the ropes years ago on an old NSR-125RR so I guess I'm used to unforgiving power deliveries! I hope you have many years happy riding on it. I personally favour the flatter delivery of a twin as I find it more predictable than a four but I think whatever you are first exposed to and whatever makes you feel comfortable is the answer.

It's more that in comparison to other bikes of its type, it is significantly worse. SV650, Hornet, Fazer, Bandit, CBF are all far smoother. The system was just arrow cans and I'm pretty sure the cat was still there. It didn't feel like something that would have been affected by some end cans. I'm a bit of stickler for smooth fuelling on small throttle openings though so for alot of people it won't be an issue.

Just wandering, you say in the video that the bike is not that tractable but how would it compare to your VFR400 or other 400cc 4 cylinder in terms of being tractable ??
@TheLoneTrader
@TheLoneTrader 2 года назад
It would depend on the engine but the VFR is lower geared and feels like it revs faster. There is a lot of power in the GSR but you have to rev it to get there. The VFR has power stacked at the top but is fairly linear in the lower half of the rev range. For twisty road riding, I for sure choose the VFR over this. You'll probably go slower on the straights but you'll go faster in the corners and have more fun.

Who claims to have ridden bikes for 10 years then attempts to show off the power in the most "learner way" like possible. Learn how to ride a bike of such nature, keeping the revs so low when it revs to 14k easy then complaining that it's jerky - Holy fuck you have terrible throttle control. Brakes are fine, suspension is fine and the engine is fine. You need a few track days maybe then you'll learn to go through corners properly without being "caught out" by the throttle that you so badly need to keep under 6k 🤧

I get a gsr 2 weeks ago,as my first bike,1000 km later may say ,that the bike is great , mine is with costoum exhaust and its louder than the track bike (r6 ) (gsxr 600). On my driving lesson i ride kawa 650 2022 y, its heavier , less responsive in korners that the gsr . The problem with on/off trotle is missing or i didnt notice it , the soft front is annoing on a hard stop ur front just sink...but overall its realy good in corners ,fuel cons, and aceleration , if u like it ,get it ,dont worry about that is too fast or agressive on some rewivs... go ride it before u pay and u will see.(sorry for the bad english):P

Sorry. Too long and repeated. Have this bike, no issues if you are not expect something extra. Smooth low revs, can easily make 45mph on 6th gear. I use it as much as possible, from -8 till +35 degree, in town or off, on asphalt or village roads. Works well enough) I think it just depends of you. Actually it is my first bike, but I cannot say is it good or bad for learners. Try it by yourself. Good luck!

Tomas Andersson Obviously it's all opinion and if you like your bike then all power to you. I just personally don't think it offers anything that the competition doesn't do better. All rounder? Hornet. More dynamically capable? Fazer. Pure fun? SV650 or Z750. Touring? GSX650F or F800ST. All for the same or cheaper money. In isolation it's a fine bike, as pretty much all modern Japanese bikes are (though that fuelling at small throttle openings really does irk me). The engine is has a genuinely impressive top end! Compare it to the competition, however, and it falls a little short IMHO. Granted I ramble. I'm just a bloke on a bike talking stream of consciousness. Guilty as charged!

Great bike but fuel hungry
@dynamotightstar3472
@dynamotightstar3472 2 года назад
It's more likely to be jerky because of your cans and the lack of add on fuel controller. That said though, with a rev ceiling that high it's hardly a commuter bike for around town or nice quiet pootles down the motorway. It's for revving and blasting flat out! 😃
@TheLoneTrader
@TheLoneTrader 2 года назад
This bike is the hill I'll die on 😅. If you like it then more power to you! 👍 However, my contention is that the suspension and weight distribution just isn't good enough for serious b-road blasting. A Street Triple R (or even the standard) just murders the handling on this thing. The cans will undoubtedly introduce a bit of fluffiness in the lower revs but this transition from closed to open throttle really is one of the worst I've experienced for a bike of this era.
@dynamotightstar3472

@@TheLoneTrader life is what you make of it as they say. Make Lemonade. My Shiver 750 is a heavy lumbering mess when it comes to suspension and yet in the Twisties I can hand with the Daytona 675s and the 765RS in our group. I'm pretty sure I could do the same on the GSR too. I'll concede that suspension is the biggest difference when it comes to bike handling though. A bit of dodgy fueling is something I can live with, my Duke was appalling at lower revs. Over came that by just putting up with it. 😃 Off road though, my Fantic was so bad when it came to suspension that I sold it and bought a bike 6yrs older. The KTM EXC-F has far superior suspension and as a result it far out performs me in all conditions. The GSR is a cracking bike in my opinion. For a bike that's bigger sibling is the GSXR it can't have the best of everything or maybe even anything. It has to be that little bit less in every respect. Except seating position of course. Clip ons can suck a nut! 🤣

@@dynamotightstar3472 Such is the beauty of subjectivity. The backlash on some comments to this review shows that this bike has a sizeable following. It's just not for me. I will give it the thumbs up for the power of the engine in the top end of the rev range. It's a punchy thing.

I have just purchased a gsr 600 2007 with 9000 miles and I have to say I totally disagree with this guy! yes maybe for a learner the sensitive throttle could be an issue but I find the throttle, power, suspension and handling around town and motorways perfect! definitely needs a screen for the motorways but that's about it! as to the bike being 'confused' what it is, it is (I believe) a k5 gsxr 600 tuned for more midrange on a naked bike.. Obviously its gonna be geared long and still have lots of top end power! it revs up to 14k ffs haha if you was after just a city bike get a 2 cylinder

Dude, all the more power to you. I'm just a bloke with opinions. Seems I'm in the minority when it comes to the GSR. I just personally think an engine like this should be in a more capable chassis and more time should have been spent on the fueling. IMHO, for the money, a Fazer does more and is more dynamically capable and a Hornet is more refined.

I bought one as a daily commute, i still have not taken delivery but I had it for a whole day to see what it is like. Ok, I might be a seasoned rider having in excess of 8 bikes in different marques, but I must say I was pleasently surprised at the power delivery and felt no problems with the throttle. I remember thinking it is nice, light, sounds awesome and fast enough to be my daily (opposed to a scooter) and seems not willing to kill me like all of my other litre and above bikes. Now that I saw this video I wonder, have I missed something?!?! So I am worried. I guess I will know when I take delivery later this month. I will be worried sick until I get on it again and either dismiss what you just said or agree and be so disappointed to not have realised it earlier. Oh well, beats going around on a freaking scooter I am sure.

I had a GSR 600, generally really enjoyed it right up until the snatchy throttle caused the bike to start snaking very badly at around 60-70mph on a motorway which resulted in me closing the throttle too quickly causing all the momentum and weight to immediately switch to the front of the bike. Long story short I was thrown over the handle bars, after I stopped bouncing I went skidding up the road on my back for 100ft till the bike came skidding up behind me, hit me and then continued for another 15-20ft. Bike was pretty much snapped in half, non-salvageable, I somehow walked away with no broken bones. It was indeed my first big bike and it is honestly an awful, potentially dangerous bike for new riders.

I had one of these for about 2 months until I had to swap it with the dealer for the 750, none of us knew the previous owner had put a super tuner on it and managed to get it to 127hp and the mpg down to about 90 and a on off throttle, everything done to it had ruined the bike so when you change down from 2nd to 1st it would cut out half the time for myself and 4 others who also tried it, shame tho it was a nice ride. I will add tho the Remus exhaust he put on it was so quiet you couldn't hear it over the wind noise at 20mph

To me, everyone misses the point of that bike. It's a naked, more upright gsxr 600. Nothing more. Hence why they still sold bandit. 15 years later rsv4 tuonos etc are just joining the band wagon. It should have had gsr 1000 to help it establish its status.
@TheLoneTrader
@TheLoneTrader 10 месяцев назад
I still slightly disagree with this. Maybe it's what Suzuki was aiming for, but the brakes and suspension just aren't really up to dealing with the power the engine puts out when things get speedy. I personally think the Street Triple R was the bike that really started the proper 'serious middleweight naked' category. It had the trick suspension and brakes to match. Maybe Suzuki tried and Triumph latched on? Who's to say?
@ferdiyurdakul
@ferdiyurdakul 10 месяцев назад
@TheLoneTrader oh I don't disagree with you on that. Although I never owned a gsr, I can see brakes and suspension not being great, hence why it wasn't a sales success. It wasn't quite a naked gsxr but a bandit with a gsxr engine. Oh, where is the SRAD video BTW?
