Hi Freddie, I had a massive crash in Switzerland last year. Broke all my ribs, both shoulder blades and my spine. I now have 2 titanium rods in my back. I had ordinary travel insurance that covers bike touring. If not I would have had to say goodbye to all my savings and my pension for the hospital bills, helicopter ride, repatriation with a nurse etc andmore! Well worth the £39.00

I had a friend working in the Foreign Office and he told us of so many people expecting to be brought home by the RAF, which they don't, and running up bills of tens of thousands of pounds. His advice was always take out adequate Insurance when travelling overseas. I hope you are recovering well. Sounds horrendous.

A cautionary tale: I did my first couple of European tours without travel insurance and didn't even consider taking it out. However, on the last day of my third tour, a tractor turned across my path, which I hit, and I fractured both arms, knee, femur and a vertebra. Of course, I had no travel insurance so I ended up spending three weeks in Caen hospital, (treatment was top-notch by the way as was the food - wine or beer with your meal! NHS take note!), and my parents had to arrange repatriation with the help of my GP. I was _very_ lucky in that I did have my E111, which meant that the cost of my hospital treatment was covered, but I still had to pay for a private ambulance to take me on the ferry and over the channel where I swapped the French ambulance for an NHS one. And, since I lived only 20 miles from the port, I was quickly in a UK hospital for another two weeks. My only costs were the ambulance at about £80 and the _forfait journalier_ for hospital meals at about £5 per day. Without the E111, I'd have had a bill of over £30,000. Needless to say, ever since then, I've had travel insurance (and, of course, never needed it). So I'd definitely recommend taking it out and ensuring that it fully covers any potential hospital costs and will arrange and pay for repatriation. Note that some bank accounts provide travel insurance as a perk, but if you're relying on that, make sure it covers you as a motorcyclist. Ride safe!

Yes, As per my reply above. You also need to be sure that your cover includes "Travel where the PRINCIPLE form of transport is a motorcycle, for which you are licensed to ride". Your experience exactly illustrates the need for the correct cover.

Re your comments Freddie about the differences between us Brits and the Colonials in the good old US of A… I have to agree that we Brits do have a strange attitude to success. My retirement present to myself, (to add to my two classic BMW motorbikes a K1 & an R100RS) was a 2003 Mercedes SL500 which I have always considered to be a beautifully designed classic that has aged really well and still turns heads. The cost to buy was ridiculously cheap, £9500, (so far less than a second hand family hatchback) but my wife said she was embarrassed to go out in it as she felt people were looking at us!! She thought it was far to ‘flashy’ a car to be seen in! Luckily my grandson loves my ‘fast car’ as he calls it and is always desperate for the weather to be good so that I can pick him up from school with the roof down …. I’m pleased to say I’m bringing him up to be a true ‘petrolhead’ and he can’t wait until he’s big enough to ride pillion on my two bikes as well 😊

I think 3 things have absolutely transformed, and made more accessible, bike touring. 1: Smart phones with navigation and 24/7 access to #2; 2: an internet of everything with accommodation, information and instant answers; 3: social media (such as you Freddie). I think at the most transformative level, Apple and Google Maps have opened up the world at a micro-experience level.

Hi Freddie, I've been a fan of the channel for many years, but this is the first time I've messaged you. I'm a huge fan of the first 'Hinkley' Triumphs - ie the first triumphs built in Hinkley in the early 90s. these are known as Triumph 'T3s' or 'T300s', The model range includes the 750 and 900 tridents, 900 Sprints, 900 and 1200 Daytonas, the 900 and 1200 Trophies, and - the first 900 speed triples (the most beautiful bike ever created. possibly.) My choice of bike for your £2K challenge would be a Triumph 1200 Trophy - no question! I own 2 of these bikes, one cost me £900 and the other £1,700. they both came with tonnes of service history (they are usually fastidiously maintained), they had full luggage - 2x panniers and a huge top box, and they are all day comfortable. My first ride on mine was to ride it home to the midlands from where I bought it on the south coast in Dorset. I filled up near the sellers house on the south coast, and did the 207 mile journey home in one go - on one tankful of petrol - so I had no need to stop so I just kept going! Beautiful bikes, easy maintenance, 55mpg on a run, very comfortable, loads of power and torque, and tonnes of luggage carrying capacity. here's a couple of examples on Autotrader - www.autotrader.co.uk/bike-details/202110299009494?advertising-location=at_bikes&atmobcid=soc5&fromsra&make=Triumph&price-to=2000&sort=relevance www.autotrader.co.uk/bike-details/202404279122792?advertising-location=at_bikes&atmobcid=soc5&fromsra&make=Triumph&price-to=2000&sort=relevance Cheers and all the best, Steve

So much to discuss in this one Freddie. First of all if you believe that the EU is not gonna come after old gas guzzling oil burning classic cars and bikes your nuts. They want the EV’s and they don’t care what it’s gonna take to make that happen. If they try to make fuel stations disappear to be replaced with charging stations there just forcing you to conform. Thankfully that won’t happen in America because EV’s don’t have the range we need for the big distances we have to travel. Plus they suck in the winter and it gets cold here. And as an American, and Kentuckian, I’ve never seen anybody be down on ya for having a nice car. Where I live there are Multi million dollar horse farms with huge mansions, million dollar thoroughbreds running around beautiful paddocks. And on the same road are shotgun shacks and run down trailers. We’re all Americans. And we all strive to get that huge house on the hill. But we’re not gonna run ya down if you didn’t get there yet.
@theporridgeking569
@theporridgeking569 Месяц назад
You’re 100% correct regarding the EU and their ultimate aim/agenda. Timing in politics is no coincidence, and with the massive push for EV’s from Western government’s coming at the same time as this legislation, it’s ALL just too………..coincidental 😉.

There's a huge difference in motorcycle insurance and medical travel insurance, both of which you need to give you peace of mind. It's worth checking your breakdown cover as I did and found although I'm covered for the EU, that doesn't include Iceland where I'm touring now. I ended up with medical cover from Carol Nash as it covers you for riding any cc bike, all other well known companies I found, had a clause saying a max of 125cc, always best to read the conditions. I want to get home safe and with my bike too. Iceland is cheaper in May, here right now and loving it, but it is colder but so far it's been dry and bright. So far... 😂

As an american I have never known what my doctor drives. Guy must be in a city with his name on a parking space. I only know my doctor is doing well because I ask her. I also know how the people working for her are doing. I treat them like friends an neighbors, because they are. My Doctor was fired for not towing the line 3 years ago by the local corporate hospital. She opened up her own office, hoping enough patients would follow her to be able to pay the bills. 8 months later she had to stop taking more patents to be able to keep up, an has a full staff that also followed her. She is in an old building on a back road. No signs or advertising. She is covered up in work by word of mouth alone. Respect an trust gets you patients here, not what you drive. Whatever it is she drives, it is not noticeable. For that matter, there are a lot of millionaires around here. People on 1000+ acre estates an living in cliff side mansions. Some are names you would know. Never once seen a Porsche here. Never seen a Lamborghini here. A local who is a well known singer, while he does on 5 cars, none are new or all that exotic. Chevys an Fords. In my experience , people with money dont usually flash money. The people trying to fake having money are the ones flashing money. People in debt up to there eyeballs. Thats what I assume when I am in places like Miami an see those cars.

It is vital to get full medical insurance before travelling anywhere abroad. Most cheap policies have a maximum 125cc restriction, so it is important to check that the insurance covers any motorcycle. I had a good quote from BeMoto for my latest trip that allowed for an over 70 with high blood pressure.

@@davidfoster9890 That's not what I found when recently searching for travel insurance in the general market. Most excluded over 125cc and those that did cover full motorcycle use were very expensive. I was told by many on touring forums that it is better to go to a bike insurer who offers travel as a sideline. Not only were they much cheaper, but were not bothered by my high blood pressure, which attracted a big surcharge on the original quotes. Old blokes on bikes are probably fitter than old blokes on package holidays 😂

In the US… the better credit score, riding records etc the better discounts you get . My husband and I both ride new 2023 Harley Davidsons we pay $304 per year for both, however we certainly don’t get millions of $$ in coverage. It’s usually $20,000 to $100,000 medical, or property coverage and so on. Now our son in law also has a 2024 Harley and because he had a bike accident and a right off a couple of years ago, his insurance for one bike is $310 per year..we live in Florida, and motorcycles don’t have to be insured, if it’s financed then they want proof of insurance. Helmets are not required either, so for thousands of idiots splitting your head open if you crash, just doesn’t mean anything…🤯

Freddie, so-called e-fuels are just another bit of eco-window dressing. To replace oil-based fuels they need to be on a scale that isn’t actually feasible requiring huge scale crop production, fermentation, refining and transportation. With out-of-control population growth the real issue will be food production with e-fuels well down the pecking order. Eventually the penny will drop: net-zero not only won’t happen but attempts to force it are economically disastrous and environmentally nonsensical. With a large proportion of the planet committed to nothing those countries that are merely make oil and gas cheaper for the rest. Energy is the fundamental driver of all economies. It needs to be secure and affordable. The last 45 years (from Thatcher onward) have seen a staggering erosion of energy security and price both as a result of privatisation and “green” agenda. Spoiler alert: IT’S NOT GREEN.

Last year on holiday the women in the next room had their room in the hotel robbed loosing money , passports , clothing and other items. If they were insured they would have been covered. 4 years ago in India a family in the hotel had their safe robbed loosing a considerable amount of money. Again had they been insured. I had an incident about 6 years ago when I snapped my ear pug off in my ear. The Spanish hospital charged my insurance £3000 to operate. I’m an older man and also have diabetes and a heart condition. All this for £ 140 a year world wide cover. You like me have just returned from Goa , where 6 people a day die on the roads ( according to local police) . Imagine something happening and hospitalising you and Monica and then requiring medical evacuation.Whilst in hospital the owners may have emptied your air bnb . The bill could have been 10s of thousands . To me it’s a case of , I can’t afford not to be insured.

People changing their cars every 2 or 3 years isn’t anything new. That’s been the case since the 1960’s! Whilst I agree it would make sense to keep cars much longer, economically that’s going to a) destroy the motor industry and b) increase second hand prices as seen in Covid when new supply was limited.

Most if not all those brands will be out of business by then but I agree with some other comments. We unfortunately will be just forced out of i.c.e . by the governments of the world making so hard to get fuel. We can go on and on about it but let's face the facts. It will happen if we like it or not.

I picked up my California 1400 on a 2015 plate in 2020 height of covid for £8200 thanks to covid all second hand bike prices have risen I believe as secondhand stock levels have never really recovered so the Cali now goes for £2-3k more than it really should. Lovely bike though but I would be wary of buying one now at 10k plus simply because it is a 10yr old bike in the main woth parts not easy to come by and expensive.

If there's no medical cover in case of an accident then it's just motorcycle insurance, not motorcycle travel insurance. Also, you need to be careful with medical cover as my world wide travel (medical) insurance covers me on my own motorcycle for any medical bills resulting from an accident but NOT if I've rented a motorcycle above 125cc. Read the small print!!!

You need Full travel insurance which covers travel "where the principle form of transport is a motorcycle". you also need cover that pays for Medical Evacuation etc (medical evacuation cost > £35k from France before brexit) There are some caveats - you must wear clothing specific for riding a bike. Look at the evacuation costs! Your family would need to find that money "NOW" not "we will have to remortgage". Only a complete idiot would travel abroad without such insurance! Go to LV Insurance for a decent policy. Many insurers will insist that you carry a GHIC Card, and present that FIRST if requiring medical attention - don't forget to take it !!!

I think Freddie that the negative envy many British have is down to their thinking that there is only so much money in the national pot and if you own a Porsche etc., you are taking more than your fair share. Hence the hate. The Americans believe that everyone and anyone can can own a Porsche if they put the work in and there is no limited national pot, so they just admire those who make it and succeed. A far better attitude I think.

Hi Freddie next month I’m going to Spain with Biking Abroad. You fly out to Alicante and use their bikes whilst getting a guided tour by the owner. The bike/accident is fully covered by the operator for insurance purposes but not medical insurance for myself. I’ve got normal travel insurance for holidays etc but this does not cover me for riding a motorbike over 600cc. I can up my policy for an extra £10 and this will give me full medical cover if I have an accident including later repatriation all medical bills etc. if required. This is with admiral. Bennett’s who my bike is with will not cover me for riding any bike in the EU and most companies will not cover me if I don’t have a UK policy with them for my bike. So the answer for me was to have normal holiday accident cover £35 per year and up this for a modest fee £10 to ride any bike for medical purposes. That seems to be the answer if you want to hire a bike abroad rather than take your own.

Where are the plants/crops going to be grown for these synthetic fuels. If arable land is used for this purpose, such will be the demand, it will lead to food shortages. Put simply, this is not even a partial solution as the cost will remain prohibitive as legislation will be used to protect food supply. Try again Freddie. The electric revolution will stutter due to consumer resistance and lack of infrastructure.
