Just to speak for the other side (I do not work for an insurance company or a repair company), but just felt like it needed to be said as I used to be a workshop manager for Ducati. If your bike is damaged in an accident that isn't your fault, would you be happy to receive back a bike that was in a worse state than before the accident? Accident wasn't your fault so why would you accept a damaged vehicle back. As a workshop manager I had to put down every single part that was damaged, whether it is broken, scratched or scuffed. If it wasnt scuffed before the accident then it must be put back to what it was. The bigger question to ask is why do the parts of the bike cost so much more than a whole bike once added up. Manufacturers charge so much for parts, an engine for £10,000 600cc can cost £6,000, one fairing panel can be £500, the wiring loom £1,100, ECU £500, frame, £2,500. Indicator £100. Dash £800. Rims £1,000. You've paid just for the parts, yet it's over the cost of buying a brand new bike. Now add labour to fit those parts. Category N is damage that is over half the value of the bike. A fuel tank and frame can easily do that, and the tank could just be dented and the frame scratched. But that is all it takes. Customer doesn't want a dented tank and a scratched frame when they had a mint bike before the accident.

Good point well made. I guess people just need to understand all that before accepting offers, write-offs or repairs. But yes to build a bike from list price spares would come out easily 3+ the price of a new bike!
@PietScheffer
@PietScheffer 2 месяца назад
II largely agree with you, especially when it comes to the price of parts... they are just ridiculous... but the point here is that many workshops greatly exaggerate the price of a repair. In order to get above the total loss value, the owner will often accept the insurance money and part with the motorcycle. The workshop keeps the motorcycle or buys it for a symbolic amount from the insurance, then repairs the motorcycle and simply sells the repaired motorcycle for commercial value and thus makes a very healthy profit... There is nothing wrong with that if it is done honestly, but the question I ask is... why couldn't the motorcycle be repaired for that amount in the first place and returned to the owner... .and then we start leaning towards fraud and this is one of the reasons why insurance premiums are slowly skyrocketing
@IGCNightmare
@IGCNightmare 2 месяца назад
@@PietScheffer again speaking as a workshop manager, I personally would have never exaggerated costs to repair. We had to go by labour times which the manufacturer sets. Normally they're actually less time than would actually take because the times are for a brand new part coming off and a brand new part going back on. Doesn't take into account that bolts can be seized, stripped, corroded, rubber bushings are no longer malleable but instead rock solid. We rarely purchased the bike once written off as again, it would cost us more to repair than we could sell it for, if it was something easy and we perhaps had a donor bike with a broken engine then we could swap over the plastics for example, but these are second hand as they come off another bike, something which the customer involved in the accident wouldn't want. You'd want brand new parts put on, not second hand. There are scrap companies which purchase written off bikes, but they tend to have a load of donor bikes to swap and change parts, 3-4 written off bikes may have enough good parts to make 1 decent sellable bike. It isn't as high profit as you'd think. For us to write your bike off, I'd get 1 hour labour for estimating the value of parts needed. This doesn't take into account me having to then go to the parts diagram and input each individual nut and bolt required for a panel to make the estimate. Estimate sheets would sometimes take 2 or more hours as we may have to pull a panel off to check the structure to see if other parts are needed. Yet, insurance company will only pay for an hour. If I write your bike off, I've lost the additional time used to estimate and I've lost the chance to repair. All the dealership would of got was collection fee (if we picked it up), 1 hour labour estimate fee, and storage charges, which typically were £25 a day, but we're only paid that once the estimate is sent off and until insurance company deem the bike a write off. So 3-4 days tops. So total we'd take for a write off bike if we didn't collect, £200. As you can see, the dealership is not profiting off of a write off. It's taken 2 people, (technician and workshop manager) an hour or more to go through the bike and write up the damages, could have been servicing a bike instead.

Same thing happened to me with 4th dimension... I was hit by a car in 2023 and the wrote my bike off, paid for salvage at the time I was pretty injuried with head injuries so I trusted them as I was in no fit state.... I'm still waiting on my pay out from a a insurance 12 months on and have been chasing . I ve since bought a new bike, but I ve learnt from this experence and will not trust these company's again. Also I checked my wrote of bike since and it's mot and taxed 😳...

Hi Freddie. I have lived in Germany since 1980. At the end of 1980 I t-boned a car that pulled out in front of me on a 77 Honda Gold Wing. The kinetic force of the impact bent the car in half and it had to be craned off the road. My Gold Wing would still role so I was invited by a local to keep it at his house. I had it picked up by a local shop and the insurance wrote it of. In Germany, the insurance deducted the scrap value of the bike from the compensation and the bike remains your's. I bought a new cambelt cover, left rocker cover, radiator and a few other bits from a breaker and instructed the shop to put it together and fit new top fork tubes. The shop was very unhappy but did the work as I was a stupid Tommy. I then rode the bike back to Oxford UK with a 15° offset in the bars and had the frame straightened in a "Motoliner" hydraulic jig (for this only the front end was removed) Picked it up a week later and rode it back to Germany straight as a die. I went on to ride many thousands of miles on the Wing Cost was about a third of my insurance money.

Never ever let 4th Dimension take your bike, you can take it to any official repairer you want. If it's non fault contact solicitors like Dalton White to handle the claim. 4Dimension do the hard sell and you need to stand your ground and don't let the arrogance of the call centre staff force you to allow your bike to be collected and become another write off statistic.

As an EV car driver of 4 years now and a m/ cyclist fir the last 47 and currently having 2 bikes. I can honestly say whilst I love my electric car, I wouldn’t touch an electric bike if you paid me. They have no soul and the range is appalling

My electric cars fulfil a function that has taken the hassle away from petrol cars. Nothing seems to go wrong with them, charging is invariably done from home, excellent for trekking into London with. Last night Octopus Energy paid me 1p/kwh to charge it up between 2330 and 0430hrs - amazing.

@@chrishart8548 I'm speaking only of the US. The issue isn't the cars/trucks. The issue is the infrastructure. Yes, you can charge at home, but many, many homes will require quite a bit of electrical work. I would jump on an electric but the estimated cost to upgrade my 1960s home to "properly" have an electric car is in the ~$10,000 range. It is inevitable, but I am going to have to save to do it right. Beyond just at the home level my neighborhood (again having been built in the 60s) every year is having more and more brown outs. A decent storm is almost a guarantee of a day without power. Why? Because the municipal infrastructure was not built for the demand we are putting on it. The infrastructure including better and many more charging stations need to be built out FAR more than it has outside of "mega" cities. THAT IMO is the problem. Its also why I think that ford dealer is full of shit. 10 years? Ya maybe..there is no way we are 3 years away. Lastly, the electric bikes are still way behind IMO. Bikes are also for the vast, vast majority of people a toy. You don't care if a toy is the most efficient, or practical, or really eco friendly. You want the character to be there, you want the revs, you want the mechanics, you want the vibration. My 2 cents.

would not recommend 4th dimension unless your bike is absolutely trashed, and beware the hire bike as it's a seperate agreement between yourself and 4th dimension, not your insurer even if you have fully comp insurence. also note 4weeks of bike hire (i could have had the hire bike for 3months) for a honda pcx through them is around £5000 as it includes daily storage cost for your bike whilst in their care and delivery/pickup of the hire bike... a new pcx is only £3700. 4th dimension, like every other business, maximises their profit fully.

4TH Dimension are the claims dep't for nearly all insurance brokers. Do not do business with these people. I have, and after a year still out of pocket. I had to demand my bike back, unrepaired and claim on my fully comp insurance, with excess of £800 . For an accident that was not my fault. I'm now looking at a courtesy bike bill of £23000, which 4th dimension have sent to the guilty driver's insurance and they are refusing to pay, without going to court.

Some years ago I slid my Triumph Trident into a ditch going about 20 mph. Took it to a dealer who priced the repairs at £2,500. When I said I was not claiming on insurance he re costed it at £800! I could live with a few scuffs on the frame exhaust and engine cover which were polished out and painted over.

Freddie please make your subscribers aware Fourth dimension are nothing to do with the insurers. They are a private company that target people who’ve had an accident. They advertise online that they will help with accident claims etc. they are a bunch of scammers out to make as much money as possible. I use to buy and sell both bikes and cars that were classified as write offs. Only certain categories cannot be returned to the road. The problem is insurers are forced into using brand new parts and approved repairers so even minor damage can run into 1000s for the insurer. It’s cheaper for them to write the bike off. So there are thousands of categorised vehicles out there that can be bought and repaired cheaply with second hand parts, while returning the bike to the road in perfectly good condition.

I was hit from the rear while stationary at a red light. I suffered whiplash and while the bike was shunted forward several feet, there was no obvious damage. The driver who smelled heavily of alcohol was apologetic, and I reported the incident it to the police straight away. On renewing my policy I noticed the premium had gone up. Asking why, I was told I'd had an accident and the insurer concluded it was "knock for knock". If being hit from behind at a red shows culpability, everything is fair game for insurers.

My wife wrote off our car when someone pulled out of a car park onto a 60 mph road in front of her. We were given dash cam footage by other drivers indicating the other driver was a fault. Insurers didn’t want to know. They seem to take the attitude that if they each pay out to their own insured , irrespective of fault, it’s ‘swings and roundabouts’ for the insurers in the end.
@borderlands6606
@borderlands6606 2 месяца назад
@@Howard1776 That sounds about right. In my case I didn't make an insurance claim, so I assume reporting it to the police had triggered an incident report that was subsequently passed onto the insurer. Or less likely, the driver of the following car had reimagined the incident with himself as the offended party when he'd sobered up, which is why I reported him to the police initially. However you look at it the insurers don't care or haven't got the resources to investigate who's right, and we pay for their laissez faire approach to blame.

Knock for knock hasn't existed for 20+ years, and when it did, that's not what it meant. It meant insurers don't bother to recover money from each other, usually when they're owned by the same group. It has nothing much to do with liability. You're grossly mistaken.

In respect of insurance claims, it's my experience to never go through a 3rd party or the other persons insurance to get a "no fault" claim dealt with, even though insurance companies will push you in this direction for various reasons. Always go through your insurance company! Naturally, if it was your fault you'll want to go through your insurance company to protect yourself as much as possible against being sued.

Hi Freddy, great video as always. In respect of 4th dimension (and others), it's fair to say that riders are being taken for a ride by these salvage companies (pun intended) and as such will increase the prices charged for insuring vehicles. It does however work both ways. I bought a cat N Suzuki 650 V-Strom 2015 for £1650, it cost me a further £94 to put right plus a delivery fee of £125. I rode many happy miles on it before selling it on to a guy who has also loved riding it for many miles. Electric vehicles, oh dear, they are just not an equal alternative, not even close. They cost a fortune to buy, lose value at an incredible rate and have very poor resale values, their range is a joke and the fire risk is just beginning to be understood. Sales of electric vehicles will not force people out of IC vehicles, rather the other way around, until electric vehicles can genuinely compete with IC it just will not take off regardless of what governments say or do.

🏍 Hi Freddie! Last year I had a non fault accident, rear-ended. 4th Dimension was instructed by my insurance company. I was made totally aware of all costs, but I also got in writing that I would not be liable for ANY loan bike costs. I was worried about 4thD taking over my claim grabbing read the reviews, but I've found them to be quite efficient. For clarity, my claim is in the final process of being settled and I don't expect a problem. ALWAY READ THE SMALL PRINT and before sighing any agreement read the terms. I think most people just they can claim back every expense - it's just not as simple as that.

Just on electric vehicles, people in the Uk may be aware that the ICE ban has moved about in recent years and was recently moved back to 2035 from 2030 (but is likely to change back to 2030 as Labour objected to the change and at the time said they would reinstate it to 2030 for cars and vans). What may be less well known is that the EU and UK have set regulations in place that for 2024, manufacturers must sell 22% of vehicles as zero emission. If they don’t, they will face a fine of £15k for every ICE vehicle they sell over this limit, unless they offset the excess ICE sales against another manufacturer who is selling more zero emission vehicles. In 2025 the limit increases to 25% and by 2030 it will be 80% (unless the date for the ban changes in the UK). People planning to buy an ICE car shortly before the ban are likely to face shortages and increased prices. I am fairly sure this phasing does not apply to 125 + cc bikes due to lack of alternatives as I can only think of Livewire zero and Maeving which I don’t think are getting much purchase in the market. In terms of vans and cars the squeeze is on now in terms of reduced ICE supply and will progressively get worse until 2030. I have tried to send a link to a Forbes article dated 22.10.23 ‘ Europes ICE ban is years away, but the pain starts in 2024 ‘ but am struggling .

It’s quite funny to hear you say it’s an easy job to get these N-bikes back on the road considering the state of your Bonneville pre resortation. While I do agree that there are bargains out there for the handy I do also understand the insurer. Labour is expensive and when your bike has been in an accident the deal is that the owner gets made whole (ie, as-new bike). Would I buy a written off bike? Maybe, if I could inspect it first and check the damage. It’s easy enough to say ‘get a fairing here’ but considering the problem with getting simple parts such as shims (!) and gaskets (!!!) it might not be doable for all makes and models. Would like to check that first. Would I buy someone else’s fixed-up written off bike? Not unless I know them and I owed them money. In regards to electric cars the problem is mainly the absolute state of UK infrastructure. In the rest of the civilised world charging is actually fairly good and improving at a great rate. Range is about the same but it’s accomplished with less and less weight and physically smaller (and cheaper) packs. I personally can’t wait to get rid of the diesel estate, having a fully charged car every day would be lovely and the acceleration would make those trips one has to do slightly less dull.

45 years ago me and my Hillman Hunter (yep...not a bike I know) were shunted off the road into a lamp post by a drunk. Obviously, I survived. The car was written off by the insurers and I was paid out half of my purchase price (the car was mint and special) purchased from a dealer. Three or four months later a guy called my parents'' house (we're talking cream plastic phone with a dial here), asked for me, by name, and asked whether I had a key for the petrol cap. Because he had purchased said "written off"" car. So...yeah.

I was knocked off my 2021 Triumph Tiger 900 GT 3 weeks ago and my insurer (through broker Bikesure) use 4th Dimension so they collected it 2 weeks ago. I was advised to take personal items off before collection so got my brother to do it as I was still in hospital. They called me up to get my feelings on whether I wanted it fixing or writing off as it looked boarder line on the 65% threshold. As it was bought new and was mint I personally wanted it written off as it will never feel the same again, plus what would happen if I had a warranty issue? Would Triumph blame it on the accident even though I got extened warranty until 2025? So I'm glad they called me back the next day saying it was over the threshold. I priced up OEM parts online and the plastic panels are ridiculously over priced so perhaps we should be placing the blame at manufacturers not insurers. And as it wasn't my fault I want them to replace every little bit that shows a mark as it may still work but it didn't have a mark there before so that's no fair to have to put up with it. My only worry now is how long the pay out will take. I didn't take a hire bike as I can't ride anyway at the moment for a few months due to a serious chest injury involving a pneumorthorax and mutliple fractures to my ribs but I'm hoping to get paid out and buy a new bike before biking season is over again for winter having waited 6 months for the last one to end! Just as we get to Spring I can't ride now which is the most frustrating bit. Bugger! ☹ (At least the almost constant rain so far this April has made me feel like I'm not missing anything yet!). 😂

In the UK be aware of buying written motorcycles or cars. I have come foul of this and the insurance premiums of a cat N vehicle may be higher. I queried this a few years ago and my insurer said they have to assume any repairs may not be OEM and they cannot insure against parts that are not correct or fitted properly hence higher premiums. The same was said in regards to grey imports, where the information insurers hold may not be correct for a bike made for another market. That said I have had some amazing bargains over the years which are often easily repaired cheaply. That BMW 1100 RT shown today may make a smashing tourer, with ABS, probably a radio and cheap parts readily available for an old beemer. I have avoided buying from insurance auctions which dont allow viewing as these can be a nightmare of hidden fees and downright lies about the damage inflicted and whether parts have already been stripped. A friend of mine once bought an old Kawasaki and although cheap had been flooded and the auctioneer stated was running.

With regards to the dream bike and buying that Indian. Under normal circumstances in 5-10 years time the depreciation might be very minimal but seeing that the establishment want us all driving electric or even confined to 15mins cities and will probably do anything to force us off the road, who knows what the value of that bike will be in 10 years time.

I think you, as the UK’s number one upcoming motorcycle journalist, you ought to really offer 4th Dimension a right to reply before broadcasting those comments from unknown sources. It is a basic principle of journalism. You are important enough to have got an interview with them and let them relay their side of the story and maybe offer advice. Then after doing your readers opinions you could contrast the two sides. I do fear you may have “prodded the beast” - I hope not? ❤

I can’t see how the maths works for insurance company’s writing off bikes. If they pay out £5500 for a bike then buy back equals that they have paid out £3800 for the bike how is that benefiting the insurance company. Suppose only benefits them if repairing would cost more than £3800? Do they sell the bikes for parts or something?
@Jimb0b1111
@Jimb0b1111 2 месяца назад
The maths works out fine for them. It works out extra fine for everyone else in the chain involved with a claim and they heap on extra cost and expenses because they know it will all just get passed on to the customers and their next years premiums.

We all complain about high insurance costs, but most bikers want their bikes repaired to as new. This results in financial write offs of bikes that are essentially fine to ride. Companies make money from this but are the people that buy back their bikes and repair them cheaply then bank £3000 plus just as bad? We all pay the price.

This practice seems highly suspect. I don’t fully understand how UK insurance claims work. In the US I haven’t read many examples of motorcycle claims. I can say that typically in my experience is that owners will typically just pay out of pocket for minor damage that the rider caused. Example, a low speed drop. Now I would as most that if another driver caused the accident turn in the claim against the other driver. There is no rhyme or reason to bike write off’s. I’ve seen reports of minor damage write offs and heavily damaged bikes being repaired. Motorcycles sold at Copart, a US salvage vehicle action company don’t really seem to have bikes that are worth buying. The ones I have seen barely appear to be worth the salvageable parts because they are so heavily damaged. So, I’d venture to guess the insurance companies are for the most part must be fixing the bikes or totaling the bikes and the owners are buying them back at a reasonable enough price and doing the repairs themselves.

All of the "backyard mechanic" cheap repairs is concerning. Motorcycles can perform poorly with the most minor of imperfect adjustment or fitting. Improper repairs can be dangerous. Damage repair should be done by trained mechanics with proper processes and procedures and if this can't be accomplished it should be taken off the road. Fixing a bike with and a screw driver and adjustable spanner and with used parts from eBay? No thanks. Fix it professionally or write it off.
