I've never tried any of the freeze dried meals so can't say which would be better. I've seen numerous videos though, which always gives the Mountain House the win. I'm the type that if it tastes good to me, I won't hesitate to spend that extra couple of dollars for what I prefer. Thanks for the video brother. ~ Dan
Thank you, and the Mountain House was better, you did get more with the Ready Wise, for less money. All of you flavor from either would come from stuff you add, black pepper, tobacco, garlic powder and so on. So maybe (with that in mind) they are equal, because they are both almost equally as bland. Thanks buddy.
I think once they are exposed to oxygen, there is a finite amount of absorbing they can do, but if you put them directly into a sealed container, they could be used again later, for whatever capacity they have left to absorb. Thanks for watching.
I love MH. They make the military long range patrol/ cold weather rations & sell from their website. I like their breakfast skillets, beef stroken-off, & turkey tetrazini.
I have never tried either one of them. Had a bad experience in the Army back in the late 70's when they started experimenting with freeze dried MREs. Most disgusting thing I ever ate. Figured I would stock up on Ramen noodles. Probably won't store as long but I know what I got. Cheers!
Cheers buddy. Yeah, they aren't what you would call good... maybe a better word is acceptable. I'd take some spices, a can of beans, some noodles and a can of tomato paste any day
If cost per serving is equivalent, go with ReadyWise. Mountain House looks a lil ketchupy. It's normal for rations to be bland, add your own doodads to taste. I like ground Sumac and Cholula 👍
Oddly enough. I picked up 4 different brands of Chilli mac and I was going to compare all 4 side by side. I might still do that. I'm also waiting on some home made chili mac that will get freeze dried and compare that as well. So I was going to compare 5 different Chilli macs. I might still do that in the future, but I decided to keep this one simple. Stay tuned though, ya never know. Thank you for watching.
I don't prep a ton of freeze dried hiking food, however, when I do my default is MH and I will bring along a couple of little spice containers with me while truck camping or doing stuff. A little garlic powder and red pepper can do a lot to make chili mac very good while stargazing in BFE.
You're doing it right, because it was pretty flavorless. For me, it is the water issue. Where I live, there is water everywhere, except when it is frozen. Sure, cold Temps brings along its own issues, but to carry water or to hack ice to get water (after melting) takes away from the convenience. The shelf life is amazing, I'm just not sold on the convenience after water and fuel usage is taken into account.
@@OliveDrabAlliance Completely agree, particularly for short duration stuff. If you're day hiking or not having to put it on your back, a can of chili and some dry macaroni noodles in a ziploc baggy work great since you're going to bring water to a boil anyway. Hell, a can of chef boyardee for a day hike is like 1/10th the price. The only place I see freeze dried hiking food really make sense is in thru hiking or serious weight issues with water available like you mentioned.
@Saltpork305 yes, for long (long) hikes or for the bomb shelter. I'm going to have to work out some recipes, maybe offer an alternative. With that said, my brother owns a freeze dryer, and he swears his homemade stuff is WAY better than thus store bought stuff. I told him, "Challenge accepted". We will see what he comes up with in a future video maybe.
Well, to be honest, I’ve never tried either, lol. I just don’t see the benefit with needing extra water to carry when I can just have an MRE (or homemade one), can of soup, etc.
I agree. The amount and quality of ready made food (to me) can't justify all this, but it's hard to argue with that shelf life.... It does have a place within a sound strategy. Thanks buddy.
I don't think I've tried Ready Wise but from your review it's probably close to Peak Refuel. Most of my stock is MH simply cuz I haven't found anything even close in terms of taste. I've tried a couple others and I'm always disappointed. The closest I've found in terms of taste is Peak Refuel but I'm not thrilled with how some of the chunks don't fully reconstitute like the RW so there are some chewy bits. Great taste with PR though so I may supplement my stock with some just for the variety. My experience with Ready Hour [from My Patriot Supply] is that it's horribly bland and terrible, don't even bother with it. A couple of reasons for freeze dried stocks for food is shelf life and weight. A shelf life of 30+ years just can't be beat. You touched on the weight thing but if you're 'on the road' you likely have a filter for water so weight is much lower with freeze dried than an MRE or canned goods. I don't know anyone who can carry more than a weeks worth of minimal ration [7gal@56lbs] and have any weight left over for gear to survive with. In fact, my INCH bag has a minimal ration weeks worth of MH in it. Knowing how to find water and filter it is the #1 & #2 skill to learn, no doubt.
If you carry the water needed, these would be heavier in a pack as opposed to ready to eat food. I glimpsed at a can of Dinty Moore. It has 2,500 MG of sodium in a can. I edited that out of the video because it was going off topic. The ready wise had much less flavor, close to none. It was cheaper and you did get more food in the pouch, so it's a bargain. I guess if you were going to stack a bunch of it, the cost savings would quickly add up, but the mountain House did taste better.... with that said, I think the taste issue (for both) could be made up for with a little black pepper and a little Tabasco Sauce. That goes to show how important those kinds of items can be.
@@OliveDrabAlliance Taste is very important to moral. I understand the argument about cost but if all you have tastes like garbage after SHTF moral will probably take a hit. Spices are always worth their weight in my opinion. The point is flavor matters.
That is for sure. If I was going to stack these, I'd definitely go the cheaper route, but I would be sure to also stack some spices. Black pepper, tobacco, garlic powder. The importance of these can not be understated. Thank you!
