The "pretending to secretly be a horror movie" thing is something I've never noticed consciously until now and I'm suddenly furious about it. Why do I even WANT superhero movies to be horror movies? Is it because I'd like to see a fresh variation on the genre's increasingly tired formula? Or am I just obsessed with horror films and sad that they never get blockbuster budgets anymore? OR do I secretly want my fellow comic book movie fans who AREN'T horror fans yet to have an unanticipated horror experience that maybe leaves some of them with a new appreciation for the genre? Whatever the answer, I'm now tempering my expectations for Doctor Strange in the Multiplex of Marmalade.
i think though, to more directly reply to your statement, we are just tired of crappy movies. and they are just throwing the word horror around as a buzz word to get people hyped up saying "i wonder what this means?" x9000
It's because Aquaman did horror and it rocked and made a bunch of money so uninspired hacks just in it for the money will copy it until it's played out and find a new gimmick
Jordan pretending to peak out from behind his fingers while waving around a knife dangerously close to his face is a better horror scene than most super-hero movie horror scenes.

I've been on board with YBOC for a good while now, but this video here feels like it belongs in the day of peak cracked. I couldn't even point out all the ways I loved this video, but the reenactment of that Radiohead cover made me have to actually pause the video for a bit until I stopped laughing.
I think the problem with scary movies is that they...aren't. Most are just a collection of erratic edits, motion-blurred half-second takes, and loud crashes of music...the so-called "jump scare" that actually _startles,_ rather than scares.
That, and every potentially scary moment is telegraphed for so long that by the time they actually get to doing it (wether it be a killing, a ghost showing up, or a torture) I am bored of waiting for it and just want them to get it over with and move on. Also the characters are usually so dumb that I couldn't care less what happens after the 10th time they walk toward the sounds of a serial killer, unarmed and alone.

Funny you should mention Halo: The earliest instance of the modern trend of a self-serious cover of a late-20th century pop tune in a trailer was actually FOR a videogame; the Gary Jules cover of Tears for Fears' "Mad World" in the trailer for like GEARS OF WAR 2 or some shit.
lets not forget Assassin's Creed 4 using a version of "The Drunken Sailor", or maybe that was something else but I definitely remember a trailer for a game using that song
I, more than anything in the world, want the next Marvel/Star Wars trailer to have a breathless overwrought cover of the Loony Tunes' "I'm going Koo Koo" while things explode, beloved characters die, and someone gives an inspirational speech about how "This is our chance to make a difference".

Yeah. It’s interesting that success could lead to future failure. When X becomes big because everyone involved was passionate and hungry, everybody wants to make their own X. They’ll throw all the money in the world at their project, thinking that more money will mean all the best toys to make the best thing. Since they throw all that money at their projects, the fear of making that money back sets in, so they keep trying to replicate the original X’s formula (as if there was one). They just stick to that formula in hopes that audiences will get so numb by the same thing over and over again that they’ll only want that. That’s how you get McDonald’s. That’s how you get Marvel. I once heard that it’s cheaper just to standardize the world’s palate than it would be to cater to each individual culture’s taste. If that’s the case, we’re just going to keep getting the same bland shit over and over again. However, there is a solution: just cut budgets. Drop these budgets from $200,000,000 to $80,000,000 and find the real crafty people who know how to turn nothing into something.

I truly hate trailer breakdowns. Easter egg hunting serves no purpose other than "It's thing! Look at thing!" Also anybody with a video player and a zoom function is trying to be smarter than the movie that they claim to be excited about.

I know that Smashmouth reference was a joke; but there is a reality show called " The Challenge: All-stars" which genuinely uses an edgy cover of "All-Star" as it's theme. At least in the commercials, as I have actually never seen the show itself.
Most recently, The Batman, Death on the Nile and MoonKnight used the slowed down old song vibe. Becoming common place now, loved the songs, starting to get over them.

Eclipse, too. It's triumphant/ascendant-sounding, but is arguably about existential crisis/epiphany. Even when Pink Floyd is uptempo/"peppy", usually they're still singing about something f*cked up.

If anybody is interested in knowing exactly why almost every trailer today has an edgy cover of a very popular song, it is a way to optimize marketing impact and spend. By using recognizable music they ensure a positive response from the audience and by making it a cover they can underpay budding young talented musicians to create a version of a song that they know is going to hit well and just have to pay for the publishing royalties to the original composer instead of having to also buy the rights to the master recording. It’s lazy but effective and I absolutely hate it
I enjoyed Bright, I thought it was good. That being said, I also love: The Resident Evil movies, The Underworld movies and The Agents of Shield series. Gohan is my favorite DBZ character and I think Jerry Seinfield's stand up is hilarious.

BRIGHT was $90 million dollars ?? It was easily the worst movie I've ever seen . The first half of the movie looks expensive and the second half of the movie looks like a cheap , straight to DVD flick .
Be careful what you wish for... imagine an inverse key rendition of "I Saw the Sign" by Ace of Bass... or Spice Girls' "If You Wanna Be my Lover". It keeps moving forward until we get a "horror cover" for All about that Bass by Meghan Trainor... or WAP.
I love the Hobbit book, and I’ve tried literally a dozen times to watch the first movie, I passed out every time around the same part of the movie. Pretty sure I’m never gonna actually finish even the first and I’m actually pretty happy about that

In the depths of my completionist fervor I saw each portion in the theater. It says a lot that I felt zero impulse to watch them a second time, let alone purchase the dvd. Pretty sure I even had a bathroom break during the screening of the second two installments. Okay, I know the overall story so I wasn't missing anything "new", but still...

Here's a summer 2022 update on movie trailers that have used existing smash hits from the 20th century: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, D&D: Honor Among Thieves, Shazam 2, Sandman, Thor: Love and Thunder, Secret Headquarters, Jeepers Creepers 5 or 6 or whatever (obviously), and probably 500 other ones I haven't seen.
