There will probably be some level of creative differences on most movies. But sometimes, those differences combust into violent relationships. Sometimes, the directors and actors literally fight. In this video, I explore the gamut, from just simple hate to attempted arson.

When we talk about crazy directors, there is Copolla, Friedkin, Kubrick and there is Herzog. His whole persona is just amazing and my god, his voice and accent. You have to be a crazy director, when you work 5x times with Klaus Kinski, voluntarily. Pure madness.

If you ever make a part two of this you have to include Henri-George's Clouzot. Among many instances of abuse to actors the most infamous thing he did was nearly killing Bridget Bardot. In the 1960 film "The Truth" he wanted a realistic scene of somebody overdosing on sleeping pills so he actually got real sleeping pills and told Bardot that they were aspirin. This caused Bardot to have to be hospitalized and have her stomach pumped. Others you should include: Norman Mailer and Rip Torn fight on the set of Maidstone. Quentin Tarintino and Lawrence Tierney on the set of Reservoir Dogs. Otto Preminger and Robert Mitchum on the set of Angel Face.

The moment i lost respect for herzog was when i learned what kinskis’s “abusive behavior” was in peru. He raped kids. And herzog knew. And this wasn’t the only time he did it while filming another film too. I get wanting to capture genuine madness amd brutality… and some art is arguably worth the real violence needed to make it, but NO art is worth the rape of children.
@Syntopikon
@Syntopikon 14 дней назад
Yeah, it's no wonder that even his immediate family didn't like Kinski. His son was the only one to attend his funeral. I wasn't aware of the other children, but I do know his daughter accused him of such. From what I've read, he was just a genuine terror to people on set (shooting at them, for example).

Michael Ritchie, the New York based filmmaker who was best known for producing and directing 1969's Downhill Racer, 1972's The Candidate, 1975's Smile, 1976's The Bad News Bears, 1977's Semi-Tough, 1979's An Almost Perfect Affair and 1980's Divine Madness were successful hits. But he got into some serious fights with 1980's The Island, 1984's The Survivors and 1994's Cops & Robbersons with studio heads and executives. After that, he would never with them again. Sadly, Michael Ritchie has died of cancer at his home in New York in 2002.😥

I should probably do a video that's just about the fights that Rip Torn or Norman Mailer got into over their lives. This one, as far as I'm aware, was strictly on the screen (improvised, but recorded) and not necessarily as a result of bad blood between the two offscreen, which is the main reason I decided to forego it in this video. But it is wild.

You're definitely right. Years later, when blacklisted producer/director Martin Ritt got into serious fights on many of his pictures, including Cross Creek for Lionsgate/StudioCanal which marked one of his next-to-last projects before he died in 1990. The 1983 big budget film was nominated for four Academy Awards including both for Rip Torn and Alfre Woodard in their only Oscar nominated supporting roles in 1984.

I have no idea why anyone would put up with any of these psychos. No, you don't need Klaus Kinski to play a crazy guy. You can get another actor to pretend to be a crazy guy. That's the whole point of acting! (And another commenter here mentioned that Kinski was raping kids in Peru and Herzog knew and did nothing. WTF!) I don't understand why Marlon Brando was considered such a big deal. I'm not referring to the subject of this video, but people gushing about what a great actor he was. I just don't get it. I did hear one actor (it might've been Christopher Reeve) say he was the worlds most overrated actor, and I agree 100%. Brando's performance was not worth what he was paid nor putting up with any of his crap.
@Syntopikon
@Syntopikon 14 дней назад
In Kinski's case, I think it was Herzog remembering this guy that wanted to be an actor and figuring he was the only one insane enough to play the parts without it coming across as contrived. I think it was more the legend and aura of Marlon Brando more than anything else. He helped popularize the Method style of acting and he had played a role in several important films over a long, long career. There was a sense of mythology built up around him, and people just wanted to work with him - maybe for the sake of saying they worked with him. I know John Frankenheimer supposedly took on the role of directing Moreau in part because he wanted a chance to work with Brando. Studios also thought that "Hey, if we put Brando in this movie, surely people will come out in droves to see him, right?"
