As a PHX native, i'd like to add a few things: 1. 120 is only on the worst of the worst days. Like, once every 2-3 years. Monsoon rains actually lower the temperatures quite a bit. With that said, just because it's a dry heat does not mean it is not oppressive. Getting into a car that has been sitting outside in the summer can be a memorable experience for an outsider. Yet somehow it's all worth it when you can crack a beer on your porch in January :) 2. According to official crime statistics, Phoenix is right around the national average, and I'd tend to agree with that. My friend from Cali says he feels way safer here than LA. Yes there are some bad neighborhoods like every city. But NOTHING like Baltimore, Cleveland, Memphis, or inner-city Chicago (no disrespect). Not even close! 3. People are reasonably friendly, but pretty business-like about their interactions. Friendlier than the east coast, but that's not saying much haha. I kinda like it though. They're not overbearing, and by that I mean you don't have to share your life story with everyone you meet. Remember: Phoenix is a BIG city. Many people are surprised at how big it is. 4. Cost of living, while more than it used to be, is quite reasonable, especially compared to cities like Seattle, Denver, or anywhere in California. But utilities in the summer are a doozy. Watch out. 5. If you want a younger, more liberal, artsy vibe, I recommend Tempe. College town, plenty to do, lots of bars. Somewhat more expensive though. I personally think ASU is one of the most underrated schools in the country. Won some awards recently. Hope this helps. I'd be happy to answer any other questions.

Spot on. One other thing about the weather and utilities is that, in parts of the spring and fall, folks can opt for evaporative cooling, if they wish to lower electricity bills, somewhat (and are willing to go through the trouble of keeping a swamp cooler properly maintained) , though real air conditioning is necessary in late spring and most of the monsoonal periods. Oh, and it can get kinda humid, some times, during monsoon, but nothing like the gulf coast or deep south.

Maitland Newton does a reasonable solar setup cut into the electric bill at all? also, I live in Taipei now and drive a motorcycle everywhere. Is it do-able in Phoenix?

The politics with the solar utility mean that you won't save as much as you used to with a solar setup. As far as motorcycles go I have friends who do it but it's brutal in summer

Great video! and yeah I have lived in the Valley for 24 years now and the HOT season is something to get used to. And yeah I live in Tempe, and traffic at peak hours is rough. As far as friendliness, I have had a different experience. But I grew up in a big city, Houston, Texas, so some people are hard to approach. We are coming into the HOT season, which makes cigar and pipe smoking outside a real challenge. But hey, you don't have to shovel sunshine, ha. Cheers! Chris

I'm sitting on my deck in Glen Burnie Maryland enjoying a cigar break and watching RU-vid videos. I was born and raised in Phoenix and enjoyed your video. I left Arizona for 40 years ago for college in Ohio. I moved to Maryland for an engineering job. the big change for me was living in a place that had four seasons. I do not miss the heat of Phoenix but I do like to visit in the winter and spring. the desert feels like an old friend and I miss the smells of Mesquite and creosote bush. the one thing that always surprises me when I visit Phoenix is how much bigger the city area is becoming. there used to be a lot of space between the different cities like Tempe and Mesa, and Chandler was a long drive through the desert to get there. I agree about the nice cigar lounges and I do find hello cigar smokers to be very friendly there. it's a bit ironic that I was 18 years old when I first experienced snow. now I'm contemplating getting a snow blower cuz I hate shoveling the white s***, I know that Michigan gets a lot more snow than Maryland so you know what I'm talking about. you can keep the Heat and the traffic and I will enjoy my four seasons.

hi all, I am planning to move to Phoenix for a long while. being a first time mover, I thought this was a good place (I still do) and I wouldn't mind the heat. I am from Alaska which gets 70°F during summer (southwest Alaska) which is not that hot for me and about mid 50s to 60s at night time. winters in Alaska can get pretty cold, like -40° cold with a wind chill of -55°. I just want to experience living outside of Alaska. I've visited there for the first time a couple weeks ago and I just love it there. thanks for sharing this video.

All great points! I especially like your mention of how friendly people are (or are not). I have lived in the Phoenix-metro area since 1975. People were not always as reserved as they are now. I think part of the problem is because so many of us are from somewhere else. There are very few Arizona natives. So, as you mentioned when you brought up the wacky drivers and the habits they bring from somewhere else, the same applies to their culture and their levels of sociability. To further emphasize the point; I lived in a really nice neighborhood for two years. One of my immediate neighbors never welcomed me and my family to the neighborhood. Rarely did I ever see them. While the neighbor on my other side would see me outside working on the yard or on my car in the garage and take a moment just to walk over and chit chat. As you said, some people are just content to stay to themselves. Surprisingly though, I had to ask my “reserved” neighbor for a favor and he was more than helpful! Go figure. This phenomenon becomes immediately apparent when you travel anywhere else. You can even stop someone on the street or subway in New York City for directions and get a more welcoming response than out here! Living in Gilbert for most of my adult life, with my job in Phoenix (near the airport), it would take me the better part of an hour to get there. I had to be there at 7:00 AM. So that meant getting up at 5:00 AM to get ready and begin my commute. It was always to be expected that there were going to be accidents on the way to work and back home again. As a result, it was always a crap shoot how long your commutes would take. The bottom line? The drivers out here suck! Rain out here paralyzes people behind the wheel! They’re just not used to driving in such “adverse” conditions being as there are over 300 days of sunshine here per year.

Thanks for sharing. I'm curious about adjusting to the dryness. I'm interest in moving from Florida to PHX. I have no problem with 100+ temps but the dryness seems to destroy my lips and other sensitive areas. How long did it take to adjust to that? Also, people complaining about the heat tend to be from northern states who arent used to oppressive heat. People coming from warm climates should be ok...

It all depends where you're moving here from .... I came from Connecticut, New York and Western New York. I think Phoenix is incredibly friendly and open-minded and spacious. I also think the roads are so smooth and new and traffic moves fast. People drive fast enough but not crazy like the east coast. This is a nice middle ground.

The thing about Phoenix is that everyone is from somewhere else so yeah that is the reason why you dont have that old neighborhood feeling where you know everyone. Also there was what I like to call the Big Shuffle. During the recession alot of people lost their homes followed by a period where houses were ridiculously cheap. This caused people to move outside of their normal enviroment haha. Then we had a tsunami of Californians who could sell their old houses and could buy two here and still kept some walking around money. So even for us who have lived here most of our lives we dont know who lives three houses down the street anymore. I hate summers, its hot, plain and simple. Three months of the year its unbearable outside but the rest of the year is perfect weather or lack there of. clear blue skies every day.
@HotLikeFire92
@HotLikeFire92 8 лет назад
It's crazy because the recession really messed things up. About 200,000 people fled AZ so i think that's a big part of why we don't see lots of natives here anymore. AZ got hit hard.

Donald Trump Next year they say Phoenix is projected to be the number one housing market in the country. Downtown continues to boom. Many apartment/condos are being built and quite a few are just completed. Tech companies keep flocking over here especially in downtown. Lots of development throughout the city. Especially Dtphx.

tank loggins I guess it depends on what you do and what your company pays for and where you live and what your needs are. Your average rent or home is 1,000 a month. So if you make 45,000 a year with a child or two it might not be too bad.

I've lived in AZ for 35 years. Based on the view from your car I'm guessing you live on the west side - Avondale perhaps? I10 sucks for traffic. I'm in Chandler and avoid the traffic by going to work at 5am and leave at 2pm. You nailed it on the crappy drivers - they're all from somewhere else. Twice as bad during snowbird season. Yeah nice gun laws. That's my other big hobby. Personally I love the heat. Tucson is a great town, I lived there 5 years. People are friendlier and a touch more cowboy. More work and better pay here in the valley though. Lots of good micro breweries here too. Not as good as SD or Portland, but not bad. Great places to escape the heat in the mountains - camping, fishing, hiking etc. Just watch the cigar so you don't burn it down. Sounds like you're settling in - welcome to AZ! I wouldn't live anywhere else.

This is a really good description of what it is like to live in Phoenix. Very real. I lived in Phoenix for several years in the early 80's when living there was almost perfect. I travel there periodically now to visit friends. It was a large enough city at that time but not the megalopolis it is today. Today It is crowded and traffic is horrendous. The summer heat is oppressive but over time you will get used to it. Compared to other western large cities housing is a better value in Phoenix though. And yes, I agree, Tucson, a city I have also lived in, is an awesome option if you want less of a rat race environment. I now live in Denver where housing costs have become outrageous, but the quality of life here is amazing. The most noticeable difference between AZ and CO for me was how much friendlier people in CO are. Anyone can move to Denver and fit right in. Apart from the conservative politics in AZ (Tucson is less republican), geographically it really is a beautiful state.. I love all the southwest states and we are all lucky to live in such a diverse country... there are 50 awesome choices...

Moving to Phoenix area in two months... all I can think is SCORPIONS?! I read up some tricks about sealing the house and pest sprays but I'm wondering how common they really are in your home? And should I be worried about them stinging my dog?
@AM2PMReviews
@AM2PMReviews 7 лет назад
i have cats and a small dog and they have never been stung but i have seen a scorpion in my kitchen light once that is connected to the ceiling. I have also seen a small one outside last week but i thought the same thing. I thought I would see them everywhere but they are very rare in my area. It all depends on your area. I know my friend had a nest in his garage. i know they are more popular by the mountains. I guess your pets could die but i would just take mine to the vet.

Traffic is on par with the metro Detroit area. The only difference is the roads in Michigan are screwed up with pot holes and in Phoenix the concrete roads are very smooth. You also never have to shovel heat.

i used to live in phoenix.. avondale portion of the city.. i absolutely loved it.. its hot... but dry heat is so nice imo.. but definitely know about traffic.. 1 to 2 hrs is not uncommon.. side streets can be better but depends on where your at.. at that time.. just a huge city.. lots and lots of people.. i agree cost of living all depends on where you reside.. its not expensive but it definitely isnt cheap in areas.. but hey.. 1.5 2 hours to the north you get 20 degrees difference about and snow in the winter.. then 4 to 6 hour drive to places in california and the ocean.. that part of it i loved.. plan to move back ... cant wait.. im sure the economy is a lot better now then what it was back about 5 years.. i went uti in 2010 to 2012 and well no experience to speak of for what i went to school for which makes a difference in any state of course.. but for a grad of uti.. getting away from the state is best for pay wise..

Serious question, I plan on moving to Phoenix in about a year and was wondering what the cost of living is like. Where I'm from $30k wouldn't be enough to support a balanced life style due to housing costs and such. Do you think a job paying $30k a year would be enough to live in Phoenix?
@AM2PMReviews
@AM2PMReviews 8 лет назад
good question. yes I think the price of living is affordable. It does depend on where you live, but you can get a nice apartment for 800 and groceries are like midwest prices so pretty low. You would have a hard time supporting a family but as a single guy, you will be fine!

30K is good out here as long as you don't have children. Keep in mind that certain things are about the same everywhere.........new cars, car insurance. Automobile registration is extremely high here. A new vehicle can easily cost you $1,000 per year - YES one thousand a year for registration. A used car still will cost you a few hundred per year. That's the one expense that shocked me. I'm from the east coast so I don't think the traffic is bad. The one thing is if there is ANY rain, the natives can't drive and there are accidents all over. I'm serious. The winters are fantastic but the summers totally suck. I mean really suck. You can't feel the heat when you hear people talk about it....the summers are HOT. Don't think you will go out early in the morning or late at night and still be good outdoors. I thought that same thing. NAH-ah. Too hot and I like the heat. Other than the heat and car registration it's nice out here and I find the people to be very friendly everywhere I go. Good luck.

Coming from an Arizonan, people are friendly just not to new comers. We don’t like people moving here, the state is being over stressed. Soon we won’t have water. One thing that really struck me about phx was all the angry people. That heat really cooks some people's brains. It's so hot in the summer, people wash their cars INSIDE their garage to keep the water from drying on the car and spotting. What drove me nuts was all the leaf blowers and the people mowing their lawns a 5am to avoid the heat. AND don't even get me started on the barking dogs. Phx is the doggiest city i've ever seen. A big loud barking dog in every back yard. If you like your peace and quiet, move to a gated community that actually enforces rules about barking dogs. Google "barking dogs poisioned phoenix" Its a real eye-opener. If you like speeding up to red lights and putting on your brakes fast you'll like it in phx. They hate having slower cars getting in front of them and slowing them down. What do you do when the electricty goes out or you a/c motor blows out because of a voltage spike from a monsoon thunderstorm and it's 100 degrees INSIDE the house? Better have a backup plan!

As a young kid 6 of us traveled in a vw bug to visit relatives here. We used a device like that in the sixties just a tray to hold the ice and the fan blew cooled air enough so we didn't roast as much. Poor mans a/c if you will.

I like the East Valley (Chandler, Mesa, Gilbert, Tempe) but live in the west valley (Avondale) which is probably cheaper and still great for families.

Gilbert if you can afford iit. Really quality of education depends on the city you live in. Check City data web site. Home prices are going up because of more people moving here.
