Moving House - Gaming Setup - Out With The Old - Part 2

I moved house and all my consoles came with me! This mini series documents the process.
I actually moved in early 2015 and the footage for part 1 was sitting on my PC for the best part of a year. It has taken me all the way into December to edit and finally finish recording part 2. I have lots of plans for the new setup and hope to have some vids of that, along with my regular repair vids, up on the channel soon!
As always, thanks for watching, and an extra big thanks for all the support, kind messages and patience over the last year while I've been away :)

After moving several times in only a few years I decided that having all of my systems (9 of them at the time) hooked up all the time (complete with switch boxes and outlet strips and converters EVERYWHERE) just wasn't worth it anymore. My console wiring/furniture mess was exactly like your situation, all the way down to having all of the wiring bound to the furniture. After a year or longer of never doing anything with it I ended up cleaning them all thoroughly, placing each of them in a large ziploc bag (2 gallon here in the US), and placing each bagged console in a clear plastic tote with its' respective A/V cables/power adapter/controller/memory card/etc, and storing them all in a closet. Since I also bought a home I ended up running auxiliary TV inputs between my seating area and behind the entertainment center through the wall with "reclaimed" (free) RG-59 coax (converted to RCA ends) and "Wired Home" brand customizable wall plates. I also put a short jumper inline on the wall plate for my main CATV feed (the wall plate has 2 coax connectors so I can remove the jumper and interrupt the feed) for connecting systems like the 2600. I also ran my rear surround sound wiring in the same cable bundle and since the RG-59 is shielded it doesn't pick up any electrical noise from it or vice versa. My runs are also around 30' (~10 meters) and I haven't noticed any loss of picture or sound quality. In my installation the downside is no s-video or composite (I *could* have wired them) but that's ok with me not to have that for casual use. My classic gaming life is much simpler and more organized now and I never have to worry about the consoles being damaged by electrical storms/surges or a plumbing leak or something ever again. It does sort of take away from the "wow" factor of having all of your cool stuff on display, but it frees up a ton of space. In my case that space has become filled by amplifiers and such for my home theater, which is also a huge wiring ordeal. I can also now easily transport a system away from my primary viewing/playing HDTV and plug it into a CRT in another room if I want. The primary focus of my collection is light gun games so that is fairly important to me. Anyhow, just some food for thought. Whatever you end up doing, good luck! I just stumbled into your channel today and look forward to seeing what you come up with. You'll probably find some broken video game robot on ebay for the price of scrap to do all of that for you.

I had spare plastic legs in my attic. I had the tv cabinet and I had the bookcase too. Bought mine as a temporary thing until I could afford something better. Been in my attic for over a year, you could have had the legs.

Poor old unit :-( But the thing took a beating for what it was! New place looks nice :-) I wasn't expecting the sound bar, much less a little sub woofer as well, now your games are going to sound as good as they look and play ;-)

Speaking of TV stands, I could really do with replacing mine. I have a glass one which I got 6 or 7 years ago now. Glass looks good in theory, and I'm sure would be fine for a normal simple setup, but its a dust magnet and there's basically nowhere to route cables in a clean way. Not ideal when you have 8 or 9 devices hooked up to the TV. I'll maybe have a look for a new stand, while also searching for a new blu-ray player (my old Toshiba is starting to whine...).

looking good so far. your old setup was pretty cool, but if it starts falling apart i wouldn´t keep it either. i´m sure once you figured out wich consoles you wanna play and wich you don´t really need, your setup will look as good as before =)

How does your CCTV work? Is it comprised of a series of webcams hooked up to a NAS with a bunch of storage or is it specialised hardware? Also, those boxes look useful. Never seen those type before, they look a little like the old recycling boxes you got from the Council but probably aren't.

how did you previously have the surge protectors connected up to the one outlet? I mean.. you didn't daisy chain them did you? I'm transitioning a whole set up at the moment and want to manage everything more confined to a power source as well, but I don't know enough about electrics in that sense

Also I'm really wanting to get into some sega games but I don't really have that many, I have a Saturn and a Dreamcast, what would you recommend for those? I'm up for anything that has a little adventure in it
@TheBrokenLife
@TheBrokenLife 8 лет назад
+curtd0g23 In the US, as a fellow Saturn owner, I have to warn you that the "best" Saturn games are astronomically expensive ($50-***$600***). Even the Saturn port of "Daytona USA", which is a terrible port (I own it), is $10-$20. The Warcraft II port, which isn't very good either, is $50. Saturn collecting is expensive. If you really want to play your Saturn, you may want to research modding it. Then you can play any game in the library for the cost of a few CD-Rs. The Dreamcast is a different story. There are a handful of games that are very expensive (some of the RPGs), but most aren't too bad. I really enjoy Metropolis Street Racer, the original arcade port of Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio, and Toy Commander (REALLY fun in 4 player mode) and all can be had for $10-$15/ea. Then there is the topic of all of the wonderful emulators that run on the DC as well. My DC has spent more time playing NES games than it has anything else.
