Moving to a Remote Cottage in the Lake District National Park I Winter

At the end of last year, after a surprise change of life plans, we moved to a remote cottage in the Lake District National Park.
A 300-year-old building with stone walls, stone floors and a wood burner.
It’s 8 miles from the nearest town, up in the Cumbrian hills, surrounded by sprawling landscapes, peaks and sheep. Lots of sheep. There’s no TV, internet is patchy as hell, the best phone signal is up a hill and you’ll need What3Words to find it.
Oh, and we don’t drive, but we really love to cycle...
We've never lived anywhere like this before and didn't know what to expect. We also accepted that perhaps it wouldn't end up working out.
Now we're 3 months in and it's been one huge adventure, filled with highs, lows, new experiences and constant learning curves.
We wanted to put together an honest insight into life in a remote cottage.
Thank you so much for watching a huge thank you to a patrons. To join our Patreon community and help support our filmmaking, you can find more information here: / joshandsarahride

We live fairly remote, a forested area in Finland. It's approximately a 30 minute drive to the nearest shop and a 2 kilometre drive along the forest track to the main road. Summer is our shortest season, which isn't so bad when you consider almost all the tiny airborne insects want to bite, burn or sting you. Winter, however, is our longest season and the deep snow affords a feeling of absolute isolation from the rest of the tumultuous world. It's a unique experience I wouldn't trade for all the tea in China. The scenery is spectacular. It's a gift for the dogs too. So much freedom for them to run around and just be dogs. I do not miss the hustle and bustle of the conctete jungle at all. Right then. As you've inspired me to do some work, I'm off to stack some chopped wood before the heavy snows start to fall. Peace ✌

That sounds incredible! I have always wanted to experience the long winters to see what it's like. This is a baby version 😅 summer is great but I (sarah) get devoured by bugs which is a real bummer when I want to garden. Good luck with the wood chop.

Wow that sounds wonderful. How much daylight do you get in winter?
@Dylanesque
@Dylanesque 7 месяцев назад
@@jillchew-tetlaw3388 The winter darkness is known as 'Kaamos' or polar night, a duration of approximately 3 months. You don't really see the sun during this period and any available ligh that does exist, exists around 10:00 am to 2:00pm and is the equivalent of twilight. The loss of daylight hours is compensated for during the short summer months when the sun is still shining at midnight. Either side of the two extremes, you tend to lose track of time.

A few tips for someone whose been there done that... we would go to the library to download when we would go once a week. The fire...I cooked on a wood cookstove for 15 years. Learn to 'bank' that fire... it's a blessing and saves having such a cold house. We also had 3 years of no hot water and had to boil, keep water on stove always available for whatever... showers happened using a 2 gallon pressure sprayer, replaced the hose with a camp shower sprayer. It meant taking sailor showers.

It is really encouraging to see you guys living out your dreams. Having strived for bigger better, more you get to a point in your life when time is more important than money. In reality these things are all superfluous as what really counts is the memories you make along the way. At 60, I’d wish I’d realised this sooner!

Myself (67) and my dsughter (49) had a house built in the forest of Newfoundland last year. This will be our second winter and we just had the first snow. We have hydro but its greatly expensive so we heat with a wood stove and only use it for back up. Getting the grounds ready for veggies in the spring. A green house to build and an orchard to start. It's very hard work but its so very very rewarding. Cheers to all and may The Great Spirit guide our journeys in joy and peace. 💞🙏

I trust that you have accepted that country life and country people will not have the same values, outlook and ideologies that those you left in the town did. The Lake District is a huge tourist area, but it is still an agricultural and rural environment, so moving there must include understanding and acceptance of such. I wish you all the best in your new life. Um, by the way, we always used to wear slippers or shoes (some of us still do!), it’s a modern centrally heated idiosyncrasy that decided no footwear was the thing! A thick jumper, warm socks and a vest is the best central heating. I’m enjoying your journey 👍.

You definitely have to be more resilient to live a rural lifestyle away from amenities, and where you have to do things for yourself - like chop and carry wood, grow your own food, etc. I live in an uninsulated cabin (wood floor, not stone thank goodness!) with no running water or indoor plumbing, but I have electricity, decent internet and an outhouse. (Peat moss is the key to no odours!) I'm in Canada so the winter is likely colder than yours, and summer hotter. One learns so much from living like this. I recognize how much of the planet's resources we use up just in daily life. I do have a car, and have to drive 50 minutes to get groceries and supplies (no deliveries up here, and courier deliveries are sketchy), so I bunch my errands together. Much as I, too, love to cycle, I am also on the side of a mountain and it would be all uphill or downhill! (It's a popular area for cycling groups.) I also do have great neighbours close by, and we help each other out in every way we can. That aspect of life is often lost in more urban environments where people can be more self-sufficient. I have a small vegetable garden which is great for fresh produce. We had frequent power cuts in the last year so I bought a small Jackery portable power station that can be recharged either via solar panels or from a home electrical outlet. It holds its charge for a year! It was pretty exciting to pull it out the first time we had a power cut! It ensures that I have phone and internet service (my phone calls have to be via Wifi). Being in my late 60s it's helps me feel a little more connected in an emergency. May you continue to love life in the cottage!

Wow sounds like an incredible life. I agree that you have to be a bit more resilient for this type of life. Also proactive and patient. Sometimes you have to do jobs when they arise so things don't get worse. Plus, when you're at the mercy of the elements and nature you have to learn patience. Canada is somewhere we've always wanted to visit, it looks so beautiful. Thankfully we can get deliveries here. Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to live here without driving. I agree that this sort of living gives you more sense of community with your neighbours that you miss in a city. I can't see us ever moving back. How long have you lived in your cabin for?

What a beautiful place to live. Living in the countryside really does ground you and bring you closer to your partner/family. I love it. But I drive and don’t have to disappear from view just to put the bins out. I hope you still love it. Summer must have been great.

I live in a small village on the fringe of the Lake District, and we generally get a couple of power cuts a year. Sometimes the power is off for minutes, other times it can be hours. The water goes off about once a year on average....

Your video just came up today for me and I think you moved to Cumbria when I also did in the Autumn of 2022. Not that I am remote and I do drive. It still brought different challenges and Mice too. However from a City (Leicester ) to a nature based town and a great community. So good for you and I shall enjoy looking to your first videos and more.

@@lindawilson8434 I work from a shed / office in my garden in the Scottish Borders near Berwick upon Tweed. I use the internet to communicate with my clients all over the country. It works fine.
