Hey viewers thanks for watching todays video of the new to us lathe arriving and the unloading. (For anyone wondering about the helicopter 🚁...We would love to own that red beast but it's not ours 😭 That one is owned by a nearby businessman. This place/yard is an airfield for helicopters. It was originally built for a helicopter business and was a helicopter hanger why the building has such wide doors and high roof) The PART 2 UPDATE IS HERE: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6PwyvY09Ab0.html 😎👍 Make sure to subscribe & hit the bell icon to turn on notifications so you don't miss our weekly uploads. 👇 🤳 Follow us online here: Instagram instagram.com/cutting_edge_engineering Facebook facebook.com/cuttingedgeengineeringaustralia/ Official CEE Merch shop: www.ceeshop.com.au
I was going to ask about the helicopter but decided to read comments first. It was definitely WTF??? Sure would like doors that big. In ours, there is about two inches on each side of the dump truck mirrors.
I wish he would’ve took care of deleting most of this video 15 minutes to watch what take literally 5 minutes irl once everything is setup and the equipment is there
Kurtis, I am always impressed by the amount of patience you have regarding handling stressful situations. Although I am much older, I have a lot to learn from you. Thanks for sharing.
It would satisfy a lot of people's curiosity if you could give a ballpark of what a lathe like that costs new. Don't have to say what you paid, but what would that beast's MSRP be? Quite a machine!
Really love when you comment(in the background of the video), explaining what things are and what they are used for. Like myself, I do not know anything about these stuff, so it is really interesting!😍
ok...at 4:55...floor lags have always been cut with a grinder and left flush. I've never see them removed that way before. I learned yet again. This man is gold.
я одного не понял. такая огромная территория, такой станочный парк, сотрудников на 20, а кроме него, собакена и бабы, которая снимает никого нет...че за нах?
Nice chopper, beats a bloody drone. Like your work mate, you are getting a nice shop together. Slightly jealous but I'm too bloody old for that big stuff now. It would take me too long to walk the length of the new machine all day. Cheers from Tassie.
Hey mate thanks for watching. Would love to say the chopper is ours but it's owned by a guy up the road 😭 yeah I will need an Uber to operate this lathe haha
Hello from the Lone Star state. That is one MASSIVE lathe. I'm no machinist, but i do enjoy watching what you do. I have watched a number of your videos, and I am impressed with what you do and how you do it. I watched the one last night where you had to make a new shaft for the hitachi excavator...... I had no idea that the eyes on those things were attached to a pin on the end of the shaft and then welded the rest of the way. Awesome work you do. I love seeing your safety pup, no offense, but when he comes on camera, i think he steals the show...lol. He is a beautiful dog, and by the look of him, he is quite the built pup. Cheers
As always, thank you so much for sharing! Some of us are too far away from being able to do this work but it's nice to see it happening! The SO seems to be going easy on ya in that tug of war - he must pity you for being a mere two legger. You don't find SO's like that around every corner.... :)
Please don't wait till the lathe is set up for the next video. I'd love to see how you set it up and get it straight and level. Is it likely to require scraping to get it in working order? Love your channel. Since Adam Booth retired from Motion Industries, he's no longer making anything big. Thank you for filling that niche on RU-vid .
Gday Kurtis, that’s a bloody big machine, can’t wait to see it up and running, I didn’t see a dro or scales, hopefully it’s got it, sometimes it’s a good thing having to change the shop around and I’m like you, it gotta be straight, I get the shits if something is half cocked, doesn’t feel to look right, thanks Mrs Kurtis for the awesome video and editing job, cheers Matty
Hey Matty thanks for watching mate hope it's been a good week for you. Yeah it's got a DRO was just removed for the transport and has Y axis scale which is same as our 4metre LZMT machine so that will be enough. Have a good one mate. Cheers, Kurtis 😎👍
Don't ya just love it when the Safety guy comes around yanking your chain? You'd think they have nothing to do. Thanks for sharing, good looking machine and can't wait to see it swinging some metal.
I have worked with Australian guys. I'm very surprised that you didn't carry the new lathe into the workshop on your shoulder. Guided my the doggie of course. That is one healthy looking pooch.
The difference between boys and men is the size of their toys... What a big lathe in my city there is no monstrous machine like that... one more follower of colombia south america
Hello Kurtis, i like all your videos. Being a non engineer ( but i have a great affinity towards machines of any kind) the stuff you put up in your videos are extremely knowledgeable and i have learnt a lot. Best wishes from India.
Kurtis - I am amazed and very impressed by the depth and breadth of your skills and technical understanding of so many aspects of machining and also engineering design. You say that you have had no formal craft or academic training and you are self-taught. If so, then respect. I also can see that you are business-smart (just look at your acquisition of workshop and tools). I am a Civil Engineer and so really have no craft skills (other than welding) but I can recognise a Master. And how do you do it all on your own (with your clever wife of course).
Heh, heh... When the SO went towards the Big Mutha I thought he was going to christen it by cocking his leg up against it! 🤣 Can't wait to see the beast in action... Nice! 😎😎😎
Ah yes, the machine shop shuffle... Played the game many times. At least you have most of the equipment needed to do it yourself (there's always that one machine thought...). A quick question, can you fill in some information on your yard crane??? I was surprised to see the IH skid unit for power, but without the hood, I couldn't tell what model it was. Who built the rest of it???
Hey mate thanks for watching! That yard crane is a genuine International 4030 7 tonne articulated crane. Got it pretty much as you see it, just new tyres, radiator and clutch. Best buy 😎👍
If you haven't done long-bed turning, It will take time to get proficient at it, I'm talking about machining full length rolls and shafting, it's a lot different than short work. I worked on a 30 foot bed for year's. I couldn't help notice the tiny spindle bore! Anyways great addition to your shop!
Love it! Can’t wait to see it peeling off some chrome rod 👊🏽👊🏽 I was just thinking this week about how I need to up my lathe game over here, I’ve got a 350mm diameter barrel to turn and bore from hollow bar, and no steady big enough to fit it 🥴🥴 Have fun with the new toy 👍🏽😅
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering The thing is I designed a steady to swing up to 320mm barrels, got the frame all flame cut out of 60mm plate and my slack ass still hasn’t built it. And now this cylinder won’t even fit in that steady 😂😂
We have the exact same lathe in our shop! Its a BEAST!. We did have some trouble with the head stock leaking oil from the top cover, Just had to reseal it FYI.
I have the same machine 4m centres which I had for 15 years not too bad for the price but can't compare it to good old Japanese or European lathes of the older era.The gearbox is a bit annoying and sticky changing gears but overall gets the job done.Handles 8-10mm depth of cut without a problem. The hardest part for me is when screw cutting near a shoulder can't go very fast since the brake does not stop it quick enough so have to do it slowly.Hope Kurtis's lathe is a better one.
Congratulations mate. 🍀 What a great machine and very nice job done while being very calm and relaxed. 😎 What kind of refreshment steps will you put the machine through before you start using it? Greetings from Iran
Hey mate thanks for watching from there. We will give it a full service, replace all the liquids, might strip the carriage and tidy up, new way wipers, good clean up 😎👍
Hey i recon you should do a video on buying a 2nd hand lathe. What to look out for and how to tell if something is clapped out or rubbish! I would take your advice any day over others because you work on and with lathes for a living.
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering Good stuff, looks like a great machine, all the best for making chips with it, look forward to seeing it in action, and great work with your videos 👍
In the USA we are forced by OSHA to buckle the forklift seatbelt. The forklift ty-wrapped roof isn't allowed either. The roof must be clear to permit unobstructed overhead view. A USA vendor makes clear covers with a bubble to help shed rain water to meet the OSHA requirement and provide a rain cover for the forklift operator. My solution to the floor anchor stud removal problem is to use wedge anchors (my favorite trade name is thunder studs). I drill all the way through the concrete floor when installing. The stud can then be driven flush with the floor when removal is required. I like thunder studs because they are inexpensive and stud size equals drilled holes size. This most often allows the anchored item to be placed in position and the anchor hole drilled and anchor installed without relocating the anchored item AND the maximum anchor size for the existing equipment hole can be utilized. Good luck with the large engine lathe. I have rigged many machines much larger than that machine... Mostly CNC. I often joked that my plant moved machine tools more often than my wife rearranges household furniture.
Good buy mate looks like a clean machine 👍 and plan b worked out as well if not better than plan a for unloading it too👍where there is a will there's a way
Nice lathe. It looks like it will serve you well. The only thing that could be better is an oil country lathe. A machine of yours would have a spindle hole diameter of around 300 mm with a chuck on each end of the spindle. Very useful for long rods and tubes. Have with it.
Hi Kurtis, she's a beaut mate, it's going to be good viewing watching this beast making chips, looking forward to the next one, stay safe, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart.uk.
Hey mate yeah it's my business and just me in the workshop for now, plus my misses that does all the "business" side of it and the safety officer likes to helps haha 😎👍
4:50 the first time I have ever seen someone do that correctly, in american shops they just chop them off with a grinding wheel and leave a sharp bite, or just leave em in the floor to check for steeltoes. lol
Good size machine Kurtis hope it makes you plenty of dough.BTW I'm getting a bit jealous to make it even now I need to bring my brothers staffy to work.😁
I sure could use a truck with a bed like that from time to time. But my 98 VW Beetle will do for now. I really like the drop side flatbed but they are pretty rare here in the States and I don't know why.
The shop boss weak point is his lack of grip on the floor. Would hate to have a limb in those jaws. Great to see him included in the video clips. 👍😁🐕🇬🇧🇦🇺🦘
How critical is the level of the cement floor? Can the lathe bed distort under its own weight, speaking of which were you able to verify the accuracy/trueness of the lathe bed before purchase or will you deal with alignment when you set it up? Thanks for your time. Great video.
I REALLY would love to see a vid about leveling and turning a bar straight as you get set up. What accuracy do you expect on this big off lathe? .002 per 3 feet?? Thanks!
Hey mate thanks for watching will definitely put that into video. Will be a few hours in the levelling and I try to get it as close to 0.000 as possible 😎👍
I hope you have a full, stable slab to install that lathe on. I've have to install a 30 ft bed lathe across a poured seam, proving it was the slab shifting not the bed was 3 day ordeal.
