Yeesh.... I don't know but, taking a ~$3,000 hand built gun down to this level gives me great concern in putting it back together. Without screwing it up. Keen to get your all's thought on this. I've never taken one this far down to clean and maintenance.
Weird thing about the DS9 sear spring, the left leg is flat instead of having a curved L shaped edge. Threw me for a loop the other day during reassembly after a deep clean. Used it in my first steel match today - what a joy to shoot!
Why is it bad to let the hammer fall on an empty frame? Please explain. Just bought my first DS9 Commander and she is easily my favorite gun. Great job!
@@standjos25 I wouldn't have guessed that just by how well made everything is. I've been careful not to drop the hammer when I've got the gun apart for cleaning and maintentance. Thanks for the reply.
A more complete answer is the impact area. The slide has that flat grove the hammer falls into, so once the firing pin has been fully depressed, it is a large robust surface that supports as much of the hammer as possible. This spreads the force out across that entire area, minus the force to push the firing pin. With the slide removed the hammer does not have a large flat surface to catch it. The force is now applied to a very small area, closer to the base of the hammer, which gives it significant leverage; add that extra leverage to a much smaller impact area and things are going to break! They could design a new hammer system that had a solid face to catch the hammer, but that would require major redesign and would likely lead to it no longer being compatible with other 1911/2011 parts.
I have two DS9 Open guns and a DS9 LOC. I never waited more than a week for any of them. Try Gunbroker or Shooters Connection. Sometimes, you even get a slightly better price.
Wait, so a $3k minimum pistol, and you have to make a "tool" out of a paperclip in order to disassemble it??? Seriously WTF??? I really hope David Lyell either found a better design, or at least started shipping a proper recoil system tool in the newer ones...
@@colin8601 I totally agree, and for any of my other guns that would be an option, but these pistols are very finely made with everything hand fit. I wouldn't slap a generic 1911 part in and hope it was "just as good". I don't know if there's a reason such a high end 2011 wouldn't have upgrades like that, but my current MPA Open runs flawlessly and that's more important to me.
