It's from their 3rd album, California. You'd love it - it's a reaction to Disco Volante in the best way (very listenable as opposed to unlistenable, ha ha), and could pass for a 'normal' commercial album at times.
You were 100% right with the Beach Boy vibes, the album is called California bc I’d a tribute to California music from the 70s but with a Bungle twist, you’d probably like the album a lot
Dave ... Do you honestly think there's coincidence in anything Mr.Bungle does?..🙂 These guys are not just some dudes joking around, they are not even just musicians ... They`re musicologists. 🙃😉 I mean, they have modern music at their fingertips..😀Such great architects of their songs, they're not as cheap as they seem at first glance...😃Everything they decide to use is sensibly chosen...😉🙂And the influences they chose for their third album "California" (1999), among others, are: ofc - The Beach Boys, then - Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Luis, The Beatles, Vangelis, Mikis Theodorakis, Herbie Hancock, Michael Jackson, Sepultura, World music, Exotica, Romanian gypsy music, Brazilian Samba, Swiss pop-duo Yello, electronica ...and a few other things more or less...😃😄Well, you see, they did their homework. 🙃🙂Also, they recorded the whole album in the old-fashioned way: analog, not in the smallest part - digital! It cost money, time and sweat, but the results are impressive... And the songs are really rounded and well-formed - their most accessible work so far.😉 Yeah, there is still that carnival feeling , but its not as unrelated as it was generally before, it`s like the song you just reacted to - perfect pop-art songs. 🙂These guys decided to return to the place of the original cultural crime where it all began; they returned to the roots of modernity to discover the first, original sweet, full of hope and delicious `baby-boomers` music that initially covered the ugliness of real (California) life... And they did it masterfully, with such great revelations, both for the past and for the future... Sorry for my huge post, but if I managed to convince you to keep reacting to these great songs from this album, I should be forgiven, don't you think... 🙂 Much obliged and stay well... Cheers.🙂
I was really pleasantly surprised, but what I've heard from this album is awesome. Never a dull moment with Mr. Bungle 😉 and that's what I really like about them. Plus it's timeless - as fresh years later as it was on release.
So, the 'California' album was more or less Mr. Bungle's 'pop' album, which certainly had a lot of homage to Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys... They just did remake their original demo called "The Raging Wrath of The Easter Bunny" (They recruited Scotty Ian [Anthrax] and Dave Lombardo [Slayer] to record and tour)... it was originally made in 1986, but they re-recorded it with Scotty and Dave in 2020. ...and by thrash metal standards, its still holds up to this day - they wrote it when they were still in high school, btw.
If you like the surfer rock you should check out Secret Chief's 3 which was Mr. Bungle without Mike Patton while he was doing his side projects. They blend surfer rock with middle eastern and south Asian musical influences. Their album Book M (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tm86ivBN_e8.html) is probably their most accessible.
Are you a fan or have listened to Patton's other bands, like Fantomas, Tomahawk, or Peeping Tom? Man, Fantomas is Mr. Bungle going mad, with Dave Lombardo from Slayer on drums and King Buzzo from Melvins on guitar. Trevor Dunn is on bass in Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk and Fantomas.... Fantomas - anything from Disco Volante, it's album of horror film covers, how about that? If you want to check out cartoon sounds mixed with heavy songs (I mean, this band can make you laugh), go for Suspended animation album :)
Wow great to see you reacting to Bungle! You definetly have to revist Disco Violante, maybe start with Carry Stress in the Jaw. I also got into Bungle way back and didnt care much until years ago i revisted all of their work and became a big fan. Its also funny you keep mentioning Beach Boy's because the bassist Trevor Dunn said that they were a major influence for the direction of California.
I would give Disco Volante another chance. It may grow on you, some of my favorite albums don't make sense when I first hear them. Disco Volante the more I listened I realized what sounded just like chaos and noise in some parts at first I later realized was a lot more orchestrated than I initially thought. My favorite album.
This was my first bungle album and I loved it so much, I like albums you need to invest in and listen to over and over to discover depths.. but it's such a fun listen! The final track (I forget the name) is just insanity and I loved it 😄😄😄😄
Fun song. Love their versatility... but to a point! It's like a buffet, put a bit of everything on the plate. Everything's tasty, but doesn't nec. all go well together. This is why I rank Ween ahead. A lot of the same versatility and craftsmanship on their albums, but not within songs. Smaller plates i guess.
Gotta check out their new(old) rerelease of their first demo, The Raging Wrath Of The Easter Bunny Demo. They added Scott Ian to guitar and Dave Lombardo on drums. Hands down their best album. California is my least favorite.
I was like you re: DV, but I eventually went back to it and realized it's a brilliant album, and a more risk-taking one than California. Though I do love California as well, but I'd give Disco another try.
Maybe you should revisit something from Disco Volante. I despised that album much like you did and stopped listening to Bungle...until California came out. I gave DV another chance and like it much better nowadays. Might I suggest the last track from DV, Good-bye Sober Day? The last few licks are basically the setup for California four years later.
Brother, "Goodbye Sober Day" is the last track on "California", not on "Disco Volante"...You made a mistake. 🙃😉😊 But its OK, we know the material its made of... 😉🙂The last track on "Disco Volante" is "Merry go Bye Bye", is that what you meant to suggest Dave to re-listen..?
Dude, you gave up on Bungle too early. California doesn't get very heavy like the self titled did at times, but the lyrics are dark. Black hole dark. Give them a chance. They re-released the Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny, an old pre WB album I loved, minus a few songs. It's full on metal just like California was full on not. And if you want to know if I'm a real fan that has been around.... check out Mr. Nice guy.
@@THEDavidHeretic my friend gave me a tape copy! Changed my whole life! Music was no longer what the masses liked. It was about what I liked! Changed the the way I viewed music!
