MR2 Spyder - compare Robbins and Sierra convertible tops

Two tops both made with Haartz Stayfast “canvas” material. Very few differences between Robbins and Sierra. (Except $200 extra cost). Edit: Apparently the rear glass attachment is a big deal. That is the one feature that the manufacturers charge extra. So I assume the Robbins rear glass installation is the best possible method.

My sierra just came in, it has the plastic window frame. Thanks for the video, I hope I made the right decision but we will know after the install tomorrow morning.

Very interesting! I wonder now, what difference there is between Sierra and Robbins? It appears…no difference!

@@paulshibbs Hey Paul, the install went flawless and was alot *less* painful thanks to your guides provided. My one issue seems to be that the 4 bow is quite close to the 3 bow, (maybe 3 inches apart. The 4 bow should be closer to the window looking at pics online. Have you seen this issue with these tops?

@@zadekharbat ⁠. I have seen bow #4 resting too far forward. I think it’s due to the nylon strap that goes diagonally to the rear and attaches to the curved bracket. Check routing of the strap and make sure it’s attached correctly. It terminates at a loose clip that is bolted to the curved bracket. Maybe the clip inside down?

@paulshibbs looks like I installed the bracket correct? But the strap might be stretched after the top sat open in the sun for 10 years. I can adjust it back while opening but it leaves weird ripples in the top, i actually commented on a facebook post with the ripples.

Very strange! My Sierra top that I bought in 2020 came with a plastic frame around the window and the bag of rivets. They're meant to keep the rear drain channel thing attached to the rear edge of the top, underneath where the metal strip sandwiches everything together. My top had some funky stretching around the ear straps after install and adjustments were all done. Someone in the group before said the Robbins top is made more accurately to how that area is supposed to be shaped, so it'll be interesting to see how these tops fit after they've both been fitted by the same person in the same way at the same time.

Thanks for the reply. I finished the Sierra installation yesterday. I’m going to install the Robbins top soon. I did find the bag of rivets in the Sierra top after I shot the video (duh). I also finally researched the warranties. The Sierra warranty appears inferior (vague discussion of 1 year coverage), compared to Robbins who promise a 5 year warranty. Also, there is NO way I’ve found to contact Sierra on the web (no website), compared to Robbins who has published site.

@@paulshibbs that's interesting. I wonder if GAHH would ever honor any of it, considering they can just claim the top was improperly installed or something.

Yes glass windows With defroster wires. I have never seen a replacement spyder top that did not have glass window. Maybe the new $300 top made in China has plastic window?
