MS 70 Silver Eagles - The Worst Silver Purchase I Have Ever Made

In this video I talk about what is perhaps the worst silver purchase I have ever made. I talk about how I purchased these slabbed ms 70 american silver eagles for over double spot and how crazy that is! These are incredibly over priced for silver bullion and are not for stacking. These ms 70 silver eagle coins are for collecting only. I do give some tips on silver stacking and silver stacking advice throughout the video as well. I am going to be collecting these ms70 first strike american silver eagles for my own personal collection moving forward because I like them. I do like the PCGS slabs so that is why I decided on these for my ms70 eagles. I plan on picking up one every year moving forward. The reason that I say this is the worst silver purchase I have ever made is because these coins have a higher premium than I have ever paid for silver coins before.

American Eagle's notorious for milk spots months after it was minted I have heard even up to a year after they were minted alot of grading companies hate grading American Eagles cuz the spotting and can happen after it was graded it just appear from the detergent not being washed off or a bit gets splashed on before its cooked. Which it looks like you have some milk spots send the milky ones back. The seller should have had a warning about milk spotting on the post!

You made a good purchase. I collect PCGS graded Silver Eagles and always at the 70 grade. I collect Mint State (MS70), Burnished (SP70), and Proof (PF70) coins. I try to pick up one of each from each mint every year. I also snag the special edition Silver Eagles like the Pride of Two Nations Proof Set with the Silver Eagle and Maple Leaf coins as a graded matched set. I plan on adding PCGS graded Gold Eagles soon. If nothing else, when I die my kids will inherit one heck of a collection and they can do what they want with them. These aren't for stacking - they are intended for collecting and their value is based on condition and rarity. Scott

Nothing wrong with buying things that you like for your collection. I have one MS70 slabbed silver eagle and one PF70 slabbed proof eagle. I got them just because I wanted an example of perfect UNC and a perfect Proof eagle for my collection. My bullion eagles, which I'm sure would almost all grade MS69 or 70 if I sent them in, are just kept raw in the mint tubes. I don't even bother putting them in capsules. As for the premium you paid, well I think PNC or NGC charges at least $20 per coin, even for their bulk economy service, so there you have it. Good video.

This year has been phenominal with the US Mint (not happy with the outrageous premiums) that has released several collectibles. I personally have two stacks: 1. Numismatics 2. Hi Silverdragon. Welcome to the world of collecting graded silver eagles! If you are really serious about silver eagles, try to get the burnished silver eagles with the W mint mark. I pay the same amount of money you pay for yours, and I get NGC MS 69 burnished silver eagles. With a mintage of between 600,000 and my last one was a 2018 W burnished with a mintage of 138,000 coins. Burnished are about 100 times rarer than the regular silver eagles and are even more rare than the proofs!

To have a coin graded by PCGS or NGC is between $30 and $50 dollars alone. So if you paid a little over $30 bucks aka double spot price you got a deal. Look at the graders website and you will see what they actually charge per coin.

I just decided to collect the MS70 DCAM series of silver eagle proofs for their shiny coolness. Then I saw the price for the 1995 MS70 DCAM (at auction it's $13K right now). It's cause there's only like 1700 of that year graded at that level. This was due to the coin coming only in a gold collectors set as a freebie and the mint only sold something like 100,000 of the sets.
@derekspalding3091
@derekspalding3091 3 года назад
most of that set range in the price of $50-300 so not the most one can spend on a collectors coin.

Similar situation I paid what is now double spot for a NGC MS69 Australian One oz silver "Roo" but I only got one of those instead of four. Speaking of which, the grading companies should never grade bullion as "MS" as bullion should be a separate category. It should be BU70 as "BU" would be designated as bullion.

A couple months back I got a sale paper from Nation Wide Coin out of Texas. I got a 1oz gold eagle an a MS70 Silver eagle signed by Don Everhart the sculpture. The price for both was $1700 lol It was a promotion 1 per house. The deal was 100% legit.

I'm really curious on this too, I just bought 10 MS70 eagles with crazy toning for $35 per at an auction, which is $5 per coin less than local shops here sell regular old eagles for with no grade. I may chuck them on eBay and see what happens.

Buying coins is almost always a losing investment. Notice there are almost no videos regarding reselling. Where are you going to resell? If you go to Ebay, you immediately lose 10% for the fee or 20% commission if you go to an auction house. If you go to a pawn shop, you'll be offered near spot. These MS-70's purchased a double spot will NEVER be profitable. If you buy an index fund in the S&P 500 then that day you may be up a couple of percent (or down) but you don't have to make up a commission fee. Don't get me wrong, I collect currency and have spent a lot of money. I love collecting! I know I have something of value but don't expect a big profit 10 or 20 years from now. What about gold bullion? I bought a lot of gold around 1200-1300 per ounce. If I choose to sell now at 1430 per ounce I may break even. Don't let anyone fool you! Coins, gold, currency...it is a fun hobby but not a legitimate investment vehicle that you will make a fortune off of.
@SilverDragons47

David Schechter idk look at the early ones they fetch quite a premium on ebay 👍🏽🔥🐉
@davidschechter9969
@davidschechter9969 5 лет назад
@@SilverDragons47 The early silver eagles may fetch a premium. The tens of thousands minted after that don't fetch a premium. Once again, even the increase in bullion prices will unlikely cover the commission if you try to sell. And sure, if you purchase a rare, 1795 $1 silver dollar, then you may turn a profit but that is a professional level of buying and selling. I dare say 99% of all coins and currency will be sold at a loss. You sneaky folks out there that buy on Heritage and sell on Ebay, I know you're there. They buy a lot of currency and coins and pay careful attention to their price and sell on Ebay with razor thin margins. If you sell 20-30 pieces a month averaging 1500 per sale, you can make a small profit. I wish you could prove me wrong. And remember, I love coin and currency collecting and have spent a small fortune. But I look to pay for this money losing hobby by purchasing stuff I hope to break even with one day. I am just speaking facts, feel free to shred my thesis if you think there is a way to make money off this hobby.

I agree, if you try to sell them to a coin shop they only want to pay $3 over spot. The only way to even get your money back is to sell them to another coin collector. Now if you hold them for 10 years you might make a little profit. But if you want to make the most profit buying and selling silver, buy .999 silver bars for as cheap as you can, then wait for silver to go up and sell for a profit. I had some graded ms69 and ms70 eagles for about a year, and I was lucky to sell them for about what I paid for them. Then I bought some 5 oz. silver bars real cheap, $16 an ounce, and made a nice profit on them when silver was at $28 an ounce.
