I decided to finally give Mr. Sparkles a timing upgrade with MSDs flying magnet crank trigger. I have not seen any videos showing how to set one up in an s10 so hopefully this video helps the community.

Only thing I just realized I left out was the mounting side matters. The trigger must use the arrow that indicate the correct rotation of the motor. "Cheers" 🍻

Great video. I always wondered how a crank trigger worked and what it was like to install one. Thanks for sharing!

Glad I found your channel! Love watching people tune stuff like this and explain things. By the way, that S10 is very cool! That said, I'm curious about the comment that the crank trigger could shock someone. Does MSD describe how is the sensor supposed to shock someone? It's just a proximity switch or sensor really. The only field that exists is very small and surrounds the magnets.....which the sensor is picking up for timing purposes. If this type of setup were somehow capable of inducing a massive field (and potential energy) by spinning past the sensor, I don't think it would work at all. The sensor would essentially be locked "on" and not give a timing signal reference to the ignition box. Just curious really.....keep posting the videos!!

Now all you need is a magneto distributor for self spark an added power along with a wet belt drive instead of timing gears for maximum performance! Oh and a set of spread port Brodix cylinder heads. With all these things mentioned above👆 you'll be maxed out unless you go blown alcohol!

Hello so basically if you phazed the rotor when on 38° , point sensor to arrow on trigger, & pointer on balancer @ 38 ° you should be perfect?? If you want to change peak timing you must do it all over again correct? Not just move sensor to pointer? Thanks again great stuff sir 👍🙏

The bigger rotor gap also over taxes the coil. And this is great, but now there is no timing advance/retard for street driving. Locked advance is a negative on a street car, or a street/strip car..
@TPVPRO
@TPVPRO 3 месяца назад
Who fed you that lie that locked advance if a negative? I have been doing it for over 10 years with street strip cars and zero issues. You must not be doing it right then.

Yeah, let’s leave it locked and sacrifice a better idle, better economy, and way better driveability. I drive my beast, and several hundred miles of low manifold pressure while cruising is a lot better than stuck in reverse with a fixed timing. Yeah, I’m stupid. 26 years as a GM Service Engineer, 8 years teaching for GM, over 30 years with a performance shop, 20 full time after early retirement, I have authored books on most things automotive, taught at schools all over, National Traing Manger for Electude, first NIASE Master Tech, member of the ASE. Yeah, I guess I’m dumb. Dumb for wasting my time here.

Do u take the wire out of the distributor that use to go to MSD BOX or you just leave everything in the distributor???
@TPVPRO
@TPVPRO 2 года назад
The distributor pickup is no longer used so it is simply unplugged. So, the wiring harness that was once used on the distributor is now used on the crank trigger.

I'm curious where you mounted the sensor, ie, what did you bolt it too?
@TPVPRO
@TPVPRO 2 года назад
When you get the SBC kit it mounts to the 2 lower bolts holes on the block only one way to mount it to work.

I believe your video answered my question I've been looking for, a very long time now. I could not find the answer to this anywhere. I have basically the same setup. MSD Box, Trigger wheel, stock distributor, which is gutted. My question: *How is advanced timing (curve) dealt with when using a trigger wheel?* >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> *There is NO advanced timing curve!!*

You had the alignment wrong on the holes. You shouldnt have to drill any extra holes.

That's what I thought to but no matter what hole it was on it was way at the top or bottom so. 🤷‍♂
