I'm an airline pilot, but I've never had the chance to train with or use the G1000 other then in earlier versions of flight sim. Great tutorial, very useful. Thank you!
love all your vids even if its revision, but I'm sure you are talking a bit teeny tinny bit faster all the time recently, AND I'm starting to say it myself as I'm flying around....
The MSFS G1000 seems pretty unrealistic. something about the font and numbers size is off, even the colors and shape of things are weird. like Garmin didn't wanted them to copy it so they made it close but not exactly
Garmin actually endorsed it I think, the only reason the fonts are different is because it's utilizing the same fonts as the external camera hud font. I personally think it's easier to read but that's me, but you're right, it's not totally accurate.
I am installing MSFS again and going back to your tutorials, damn you talk fast but it is such great information. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos.
Is there anyone besides me that prefers the old-fashioned analog gauges? This crap is just too complicated. I would crash the damn plane trying to press all these buttons and dial in all numbers. Just give me the good ole basic six.
@@Iluvdogs223 I find the g1000 display and all the buttons and knobs just way too BUSY. With the analog gauges if I wanted to see something I knew exactly where to look and got immediate feedback from the dial. All the information contained on that g1000 is just brain overload. I guess it's because I'm older and have poor vision.
I guess it’s about if you grew up with technology. My parents for instance still have trouble turning on an iPad. The G1000 is a good tool once you learn how to use it, and it helps if your technological minded, it’s safer and relives a tremendous workload, that can otherwise be used by the pilot to fly the plane
You got the roll scale completely wrong, 24:30. There are no 5 degree marks, the major marks are at 30 and 60 degree, the minor marks are at 10, 20, and 50 degrees.
This - although a minor mistake - is exactly the reason why I hate having random RU-vid videos from random players as the primary mains of obtaining information on a simulator. MSFS desperately requires a proper, official and complete documentation / learning center like FSX had. It's just cheap not having anything oficial explaining you how their own Sim works, what's its' limitations and features.
After getting used to it, after learning flight simulators using steam gauges, it strikes me that the graphics in the G1000 are very reminiscent of early flight simulators! :D
Your videos have helped me out so much! Is it just me or a known issue, I can't get com 2 or nav 2 to work. Not sure if they worked before the upgrade. I'm using the WT g-1000 but even when that is uninstalled I get the same problem. I always fly the DA-62 but I tried it on the 172 and same issue.
So, let's say we create a flight plan together with GPS navigation and we choose a LNAV approach. There is an altitude indication marked in purple to the right of the altimeter bar. How do I make sure that the autopilot follows that instruction as per the GPS navigation flight plan? Currently it just appears to the right of the bar, but I cannot force the AP to pick it up as the desired altitude. I have seen it happen before, so anyone that could give a tip would be much appreciated.
Great video for actual pilots (or very dedicated simmers) looking for a quick overview of G1000. I see a few comments about it being too fast- I imagine that’s true if you don’t know what the acronyms mean. But if you know what things mean but just aren’t familiar how to do it on G1000 then this was perfect!
He certainly speaks too fast for my brain, but I just blame my brain. His knowledge is outstanding and I love his videos even if I can't follow it all in one sitting.
@@kevinbrook7033 lol "I just blame my brain" that's pretty funny. You can always adjust the playback speed to get it to match your brain's speed on the subject. Maybe 80 or 90% would be better?
Why are you flying through, no pun intended, what is supposed to be a tutorial on learning the G1000? I'm sorry and I don't mean to be negative, but you talk so fast and jump around so quickly that someone who is trying to learn how to operate the G1000 simply cannot follow you. It then becomes just a recital of everything you know, at break neck speed, and not a lesson for those of us wanting to learn the functions and how to implement them. It's a shame because you really do know your subject, but you're lacking on how to communicate it in a way that someone will learn and retain it. One of the basic concepts in effective teaching is "Tell them what you'll teach them, teach them, tell them what you taught them". This is how you absorb and retain....by repetition. Don't get me wrong here I appreciate the video, it's great, but learn something about communication and your next one will be fantastic! Try "How to Speak by Patrick Winston" an MIT professor teaching communication here on RU-vid for some ideas.
While I can see your thought process with his instruction, I find that being able to stop the video and go back is a big help to learning and retaining what the man shows.
@@wdibert Hi Wayne. I agree with you but you shouldn't have to replay every 10 seconds of video just to try and understand what he's saying. Do you watch the news or the weather on TV? Do you have to record it and play back everything they say just to make sense of it? No Way! It's because it is called "Communication 101" and it's a learned skill which he simply does not posess.
@@wdibert If you want really good instructional MSFS videos done the right way, go to "Kip on the Ground". This man knows how to communicate effectively and is a pleasure to watch and learn.
If you understand communication 101, there are techniques to communicate effectively and things to avoid when attempting to impart knowledge verbally. What you try to avoid is speaking so fast the listener, hearing things for the first time, does not have time to assimilate the information given. Think newscasters. Professionals who speak at the right speed and don't speak so fast you go "what did he say?". I could slow it down, yes, but he could slow it down in the first place so all could follow IF he knew how to communicate effectively. Effective communication is a skill that needs to be learned that many here don't possess. @@marcofeature
The latest Sim update causes me a problem with the G1000 where I cannot PRESS the toggle select button once inside any of the menus for FPL, etc. The newest version allows me to TURN both the inner and outer knobs, but now uses the mouse wheel to turn these CW or CCW. I can PRESS the button, and it DOES turn yellow showing it is acting on my command, but it has no effect. It won't turn on the cursor so I can then enter a waypoint in FPL as an example. Any ideas?
I have the same exact issue. Lucky for me, I also have the RealSim Gear 530 hardware GPS so I’ve been “trapped” flying only airplanes that use the 530.
Great vid. I noticed that the button to switch between Com 1 and Com 2 (and Nav 1/2, for that matter) are now inop since MSFS Update 5. Have you found the same?
@chris, This was my first time using the g1000, so I spent a lot of time searching for what's happening there. Seems the interaction changed a while ago - to click, you now hold down the left mouse button, then click the right mouse button. Works on Nav and Com for me.
When I hover over buttons it brings up a massive bar showing the name and what the button is and looks nothing like the UI you have when you hover over a button.
That is an option that can be turned off in MCFS. I don't remember exactly where this is, but I believe it is in the ASSISTANCE area of the settings. I had the same problem, and turned it off.
Let's say I'm at the menu selecting my departure location and arrival location, set cruising altitiude then on the MFD, in the PFD box, it shows KTPA -> TIME. 1) why did it default to this and 2) what does the time mean? I've seen in other videos where it default for example, TPA to ATL, example (may be wrong lol), KTPA -> KATL. and if you use a direct router, how can you restore your default route? Thanks. Just trying to understand.
Thanks for good tutorial for entering the G1000 data with MSFS. I've been looking for some good info YT vids on the G1000 with MSFS. Kind of disappointed with MSFS and G1000 integration. But what are ya gonna do for 120 bucks? The Garmin Cessna NAVIII trainer on DVD/CD (35.00) is much more accurate. However, it is just a representation of the MFD/PFD but VERY accurate. Just put it in autopilot, set 100 Kts, and you have a poor mans G1000 sim. I have a real T182T with G1000, and before that had a 172 with one of the first G1000's, but have gotten rusty with my age, hence the MSFS for times I don't want to go up but want to review. Some day I'll post a flight with parallel views of A) real thing vs B) MSFS with G1000 and pluses and minuses. The apparent plus with MSFS is great for fun, practice and practice with no huge costs. : )
Good morning Mr Batcomb. Could you please tell me how to tune the ADF frequency on the BE350? That particular FMS does't have the serie of options below the CDI. Thanks
So, I'm trying to change the leg of a Bush Trip flight I'm doing. But I just can't make a choice on the Flight Plan page on the MFS. It's stays on the first leg, and I can't select like other leg so it loads to the FPS. I try clicking on everynob. And no changes
Thanks. I like your approach and learning technique. I have been a real world pilot before these glass cockpits so your instruction is a big help. I like the new MSFS 2020.
Thankyou this is superb. This instrument is certainly not intuitive and must be learned. I have gone back to flying this in MSFS until they sort out some decent airliners!
Great vid although I cannot get either of the Bearing 1 or 2 to display anything but the GPS information, despite having 2 different VORs set up in the NAV options. Any ideas?
Added entry to my post minutes ago. The poster here is giving everyone a heads up on the limitations and 'glitches' of the sim vs real thing. Thanks for that! A nice follow up vid would be workarounds for many of the limitations. I have found a few in just a few hours with the MSFS.
@11:13 how to turn off synthetic vision. How cool and great is this. It will help me get my head out of the cockpit for VFR flying. I heard a real world pilot who was not IFR rated get caught in bad weather, it saved his life.
Press the NRST soft key on the PFD. This brings up the nearest page. It will initially show the nearest airports. I think you then turn the Large knob to move between pages. Once on the correct page, press the toggle select button to start the cursor. Once it is blinking, you can use the small or large knob to move between the items on the displayed page ( I don't remember which one). Once the cursor is on the item you wish to select, you can press the DIRECT TO button and it will ask you to activate? Simply press the ENT (Enter) button, and what you selected will now be active.
Great great video I love these videos. I do have one question where do you get your ILS frequencies I go to the VFR map on my phone and go to the airport to get them but is there another way in the game
You have to tune NAV 1 radio to the ILS frequency, and then press the CDI button on the PFD to bring up the ;green course pointer. The G1000 can display 3 separate courses. Simply press the CDI button to display the one you want. You then need to adjust your course pointer to the correct ILS heading. You can use a website called AIRNAV where all US airport info is available. You can then view airport diagrams, download SIDs, STARs, and ILS or RNAV approaches. Both the Airport diagrams and, RNAVS, and ILS diagrams will show you the correct runway course heading for the approach. Also, if you load and activate an approach in the G1000, eveything will be set for you. (I think)
So that you can tune in 2 stations and switch between them with a single click. Useful when transitioning from one to another. Same goes for voice radios.
Great information as usual. But also, as usual, I have a really hard time listening to your narration - too fast and grating. So if I really want to watch, I slow the video down to .75 or even .5 speed to get a more human sounding voice.
Your narration really really annoys me you talk to fast and the tone is not suitable for radio. and the talk about the Garmin is just ok. You also may want to lose your cynicism.
