I have a non-gpu related request for you Jay. As a fellow Crosshair VIII Extreme owner, but 1 with way more experience than me & contacts @ Asus, could you maybe do a vid about the optional addons mentioned in the manual that have to be purchased separately, & where/how to get them. I looked on their site, both UK and international versions, & couldn't find anything. Edit: I don't mean SSDs, I mean stuff like the USB 3 headers on the motherboard, that the manual says you need to buy some sort of addon for. I'm familiar with the old straightforward USB2 headers that older mobos had, but I got the feeling that this is something new/different. 🤷♂️ (I mean more than just 1 to 1 port extension type things)
@@Pony375 agreed. My 6800 xt I was able to undervolt and remove 100mhz and with the memory tuning I gained performance and dropped 21 degrees with my hotspot. This greatly improved the fan noise and made it go from noticeable to silent. Undervolt guide would help so many be happier with the noise output of their PC!
One thing I realised moving over from Intel to Ryzen 3700x is that the cpu temperature in afterburner is wildly inaccurate. Ryzen Master seems to be the most accurate reading.
So it should be no surprise that I forgot to do the timestamps. My wife and I are currently on a mini vacation for our anniversary but as soon as I can get back to a PC I will update them, sorry about that.

Would love to see a AMD 5000 series PBO2 guide using curve optimization, PBO limits for PPT, TDC, and EDC, how to find those optimal values, and how to make sure the BIOS sets those limits correctly!
Can you please do an updated beginners guide on overclocking? Not talking about wanting to see a specific card's speeds, but a very detailed general guide targeted toward those that may have a more budget friendly build and are starting out. Last video i can find like that from your channel is from 6 years ago. And im guessing most of the principles haven't changed. But i dont think we need to know how to overclock with SLI in mind anymore.
Do an undervolting guide! I undervolted my FE 3080 and am basically getting the same FPS for way less power and heat. Overall really happy with it. Saved 10-20C on my GPU temp while gaming.
Sidenote as a photographer/videographer... the lighting on this and the previous video is absolutely top-notch. Using the kicker almost as key provides a near-cinematic look, and it adds a whole new layer of professional appearance. It's also THE best way to shoot a live subject in-frame with a flat panel display.
I know Jay said in his last msi afterburner video he didn’t like how the overlay wouldn’t put names next to the different stats for diff categories, etc. But you can do that. Takes a little fiddling but you can name each individual stat or setting on the overlay so they all have their own lines and names, if you want. Think he should make a video on how to do that.
yea you can do alot through setting up a profile on rivatuner and their profile editor but its not super simple and it can clash sometimes with the AB overlay
I have it set up so it says "GTX1080" instead of gpu, "R5 3600" instead of CPU, "SYS MEM" for the RAM and "GPU MEM" for the vram. Got the font changed aswell and all, except where it says what the graphics api is and the Frametime one (I have the graph) are a nice ocd friendly block due to equal lettercount (including the spaces). All native msi internal settings, and no profile set up anywhere.
quick tip as well as it wasn't mentioned in the vid. gpus operate on a "pull not push" typa logic. it will only take (pull) what power/voltage it needs to hit a certain speed. you generally speaking can't force feed (push) it power. so those voltage/power sliders are (generally speaking) safe to max out. the gpu will only take what it needs from what the sliders allocate. most of the time it won't use up those maxed out sliders. those sliders are effectively saying "the gpu can use 'up to' this much"
I want to throw this out there as well. Undervolting your GPU is also something you can do in Afterburner. I did it because I wanted to lower my temps. Weirdly my frames went up slightly.
Undervolting is definitely going to be more gainful than overclocking on the RTX 30xx series. They're already going as fast as they can out of the box. The reason you saw an improvement when undervolting is because temperature is one of the variables that GPU boost takes into account. If your card is running cooler, it will be allowed to boost higher, and for longer ;) This goes for the Ryzen 3xxx\5xxx CPUs as well. Overclocking will only raise temps with margin of error improvements. Undervolting is the new OC.
@@badnewsbruner Also helps to have proper air tunneling and cooling. My 3060ti sits at 63 degrees at 1080p high on most games and around 68 degrees on 1440p without boosting or undervolting. Case is a Corsair 4000D airflow. Great cases
I think there is definitely higher gains to be had undervolting the RTX 30xx series than attempting to OC them. They're pushed as hard as they're going to go out of the box. Unless you're on GOOD water cooling, you're not going to get anything gainful out of them. Good thing about undervolting is you not only get better temps, but since GPU boost uses temperature as a variable, you can even get higher boosts because the cards running cooler.
@@badnewsbruner Yep, i get a higher average fequenzy when beeing undervolted on my 3080@ 937mv for 2055mhz in curve ( could go a little higher but it is 100% stable like that). before that undervolt i could reach 2100 mhz but frequency was swinging all over the place due to powerlimitations. so the average frequenzy was lower as with an undervolt. so was the performance. Also that Optimum Tech tutorial was realy good. just dont be as conservative as him. can get higher clocks and lower powerdraw over stock at the same time with 30-series

I realize the video is meant to be Afterburner specific and accessible to a general audience, but if you want to remove the mystery of what's limiting the card, reading the PerfCap field from GPU-z's Sensors tab is a much better method than guessing and checking by changing sliders and looking at fluctuating figures.
Afterburner is such a treasure. Related to this, I have a buddy who just got a 3080ti from the Newegg shuffle, but when he started using it, it would crash after only a few minutes of gameplay on any game. He was very upset of course and felt RMA was his only choice. Considering the GPU landscape at the moment, that made him even more upset. After lots of troubleshoot and research, we used Afterburner to see that his card was boosting all the way to 2100 and then crashing. We used it to limit the boost, and he's been stable ever since.
@@EfrainMan I know he's probably good now that the card is power limited, but if they ever want to fully unlock the power of the card, I know some types of PSUs out there are known to fail with 3080Ti cards. My 3080Ti (EVGA) had issues until I changed to another PSU brand.
I think the limits is less thre boost and more the high segmentation of cards now days. Any card u used to have decent OC to is now turned into a TI Super super Sque
I would say this was another one of those videos that you think you do not really need, but then when you need it, it never exists so thank you Jay for giving us content that maybe won't be the most viewed one instantly, but will definitely be really useful over time and time stamps are really appreciated.
As time goes on im really starting to like the AMD Master software. The fidelity is amazing. I've used both NVidia and Radeon cards and im really leaning toward the AMD cards more and more. The NVidia cards are really starting to get to the point of needing to tune the settings to such a degree that its getting tedious to do it all the time. The Radeon cards just do it better and seem to just feel better. Sure, NVidia cards are more advanced, but Radeon cards just, I dont know, feel more smooth. I dont know how to put it but I prefer and lean more toward the Radeon cards now.
Allright Jay i gotta ? for ya. I have a RTX 200 Super and the options i have in Afterburner are as follows..... Core Voltage %....... Core Clock MHz....... Shader Clock MHz (can't change this one"....... Memory Clock...... and the Fan speed slider......... What i'd like to know is why i don't have a POWER LIMIT slider?????
I think it would be interesting for many if you showed the "CTRL+F" graph of Afterburner in a seperate video. How you can configure the shown voltage/frequency range in the config files and how you can actually fine tune there to find your real top end of your specific GPU/VBios combo. IMHO in this diagram lies the real hint to properly understand how the settings in Afterburner actually work and how they apply considering the Nvidia log applied to the settings.
I use the Radeon software for my 6900 XT Liquid Devil. 2660mhz Core, Fast timings on ram at 2150 and +15% power limit. It’s very stable, but I’m going to try and up that a bit more.

Hey Jay been a long time viewer and went from a console gamer to PC builder because of you! You helped me so much in building my PC... with that said a video request/ recommendation I have is how to safely deep clean hardware inside the computer. I would love to see how to deep clean graphics cards and the CPU cooler and the like. Or what NOT to do. Love the videos man thanks for all you do!

One thing to note for AMD auto OC... what I've found is you can only do 1 of the three options. So say you set overclock gpu, then set overclock vram it will drop the GPU back down. I've just done through and done the auto, noted it down, then set both settings to what the auto oc showed.
I think I prefer the Nvidia offset way of doing things. Much easier to maintain a point of reference to know how high or low you are going. If I type in 2000MHz on memory clock, that tells me little. Going +200MHz tells me how much I'm overclocking without having to look up the stock speed.
My evga 2080 2 fan edition was hitting 80°C all day long, but i mounted the rajintek morpheous 2 and 2 noctua industrial 3000rpm fans and temps are in the 50s°C. Now i'm happy
Hi Jay. I noticed that you have an iCUE NEXUS mounted on your keyboard. Just added one to my keyboard. The fact that it monitors so many system parameters is incredible. I'm still playing with its features. The learning curve is somewhat high, but then so is the just plain iCUE. If you haven't made a video on how it works already, I'd like to see you make one.

You should have talked about undervolting and core curves and how they relate to power load. I know you talked briefly about voltage and trying to get a high freq if the voltage isn't enough but it would have been a more complete video.
Glad someone finally explained the Core voltage % properly. I was always unsure on what it did exactly, even though i know it's fully safe now i'll probably only use on specific occasions. Update i'm rank 1 in 3Dmark in my specific hardware now (not that special but it's something) c:
Nice video on setting video card performance parameters. I usually underclock my video card in the summer to reduce the chance of heating up my room when gaming. For the most part, I leave the defaults on, unless I think a game seems not ideal for the current options set from the video card.

Dang it, I don't have boost and I'm on mobile. All this can do for me is adjust clocks. Well since I'm stuck at 900 millivolts (resets every time I apply), I might as well lower the clocks and monitor the temps.

For the GT 1030, I can confirm that core voltage control is indeed a placebo. I slid it all the way to the right while I was watching GPU-Z but there was still no significant increase to the core voltage, even under full load. Edit: ok seems like I did not look hard enough lol! I slammed the voltage slider all the way to the right, and the "VRel" in perfcap reason in gpu-z went away at 100% gpu load, replaced by "Pwr", and more of the offset I dialed into the core clock slider is now actually manifesting in the clock counter.
I cranked mine up to max and I got some EXTREMELY terrifying screen tearing and I heard a POP sound come from the inside of my computer. I immediately reset the voltage slider, turned off my pc, and checked the inside of it. as far as I know, nothing was damaged and it's working fine now but I'm never touching that slider again lmao.
I found much more gains by doing undervolting than straight up overclocking on my 2070S. Started by doing it because it's an Aorus model and that thing already has an aggressive OC by default and it just bakes. (Yeah, Gigabyte does cool looking coolers but not that effective it seems) As it turned out, it now reaches boost clocks of 2050mhz at 975mV, never goes beyond 73C under full load, and all that with power limit capped at 90!
Thanks for this Jay. I bought a new Aorus Master 3070 for 1049.99 CAD (849 USD, literally 50$ over original msrp for that card) in store yesterday, but the fans would max out at the slightest of load. I uninstalled Aorus Engine, installed Afterburner and it fixed my issue. Aorus engine would not adjust fan speeds, no mater what I did, it just wasn't working.
