Includes AM5 motherboards. If you find the video helpful please consider liking it so others may discover it as well.
This should work on any MSI motherboard that supports Flash BIOS Button (BIOS Flashback) You can update the BIOS without the CPU installed with this method. You do not power up the PC at any point when doing this.
If you found this video helpful please consider leaving a Super Thanks or a tip with BAT if you use the Brave browser. It helps us to invest back into the channel more. But even if you don't we will still try to answer as many comments as possible. Thanks for watching.
The most common solution to problems updating usually is solved by trying a different USB drive. These systems are really picky about what drives will work and sometimes even a fresh format is enough. And don't forget to rename the file to MSI.ROM.
In this video, we show how to update the BIOS on an MSI motherboard using the Flash BIOS Button method. This should work for most MSI motherboards including Z790, Z690, B660, H610, Z170, X299, X570, B450, X670 etc. Pretty much any Intel or AMD motherboard that supports BIOS Flashback. Just be sure that you download the correct version of the BIOS for your specific board.

hi i have a question im building my first pc i bought a msi z790 edge wifi the box says it supports 13th gen will i still need to update before building my pc?
@KLEEBZTECH
@KLEEBZTECH 11 месяцев назад
@@esmerodriguez4030 hard to say for sure. The board may support it but need updates to the BIOS. What you can do is look on the support page for the site and see if the CPU you are going to be using is supported and what BIOS is required. It should be under the compatibility section of the support page for your motherboard. I know for mine it is under the Results column and will show a zip file name which that name shows the BIOS version.

I have everything in the tower fully put together, I just haven't turned it on yet cuz im worried about messing something up so I wanna get my steps in order and give myself best odds at doing it right first time. Should I start the pc at least once b4 doing my bios update? Do I turn my psu power on when doing bios update cuz I got everything connected so im confused about that.

Not too shabby of a video. I am building out a new PC using the MSI MPG Z790 Carbon and will be using an I9=13900 Raptor (13th Gen) CPU. Even though the board states 12/13th Gen ready, I decided to flash the BIOS after looking that the BIOS update frequency on MSI's support page for the motherboard, every couple of months. Typically motherboards don't have the latest firmware revision, and depending the particular scenario, it may or may not matter if you first flash it before inserting the CPU, RAM, etc. The only time I would think it would necessary is if you're installing a new gen of CPU, then having the current BIOS revision would matter. I just put the MB on the box, hooked up the motherboard power cable, and only used one CPU power cable, even though there are 2 CPU power connect ports -- I'll use both when I'm assembling it into my tower case. A few points to mention: - I used an older USB 2.0 thumb drive that lights up when being accessed that way I can tell if the motherboard flashing process is accessing it. A USB 3.0 would probably work too. Make sure to format it with FAT32. - After downloading the appropriate BIOS update file from MSI's website, make sure you Extract All (uncompress) the .zip file. Then I would recommend to look in File Explorer at the View settings tab, and make sure Details, File name extensions are ticked. - Fully rename the uncompressed BIOS update file to MSI.ROM and copy it to the now formatted, empty USB drive. - There is a USB port labeled on my motherboard for MFLASH which is where I inserted the USB drive into. - I powered on the PSU, verified the motherboard had power and then pressed the labeled Flash BIOS button. It started blinking and I also noticed the USB drive was being accessed. - Ultimately the LED for the Flash BIOS button stopped blinking and went off. Total time took around 6 to 7 minutes of time. I won't know for 100% certainty if it it worked until I get my system fully assembled and a monitor hooked up -- still waiting on the CPU to show up, but I'm assuming the processes did work.

Clear instructions, although slightly different from mine - still great. It stated itself up after the 3 second press followed but the flashes on the bios button, about 5 mins and it shut down, but booted back up. I would give it at least 20 min before assuming it could be done to be safe. Each board is different when it comes to the lights and how it acts. But 20 min should be the max needed for it to update in my experience. But if the USB was flashing for that long then a good sign it probably worked.

@@KLEEBZTECH I finally did it lol. I used 6 different USB drives and it actually finally worked with a micro SD card into an adapter wtf lol. Thanks for your replies and guidance. You’ve helped tons of people. Edit: and yeah the flashing was exactly what you mentioned. When the light stayed solid it usually meant it failed.

It is a test bench. You can find them in many places like Amazon. They are designed to make it easy to work on systems without needing to be in a case.

Hello, This was a great tutorial and process explaining everything but I have came up with a problem so basically I used the usb I got with my motherboard and that usb made the motherboard turn on and there’s a red light flashing where the USB ports are I can see it through the side kind of so I’m not sure if it’s not working or not but after 7 minutes the lights all turn off and then turn back on except for the flashing red lights and my motherboard still has a red dot next to cpu so I’m not sure what to do now as well as I tried another usb that I got from Best Buy and I asked them if it would work with my pc and they said it would but when I tried it sadly didn’t so now I’m very confused on what to do. I was wondering if you could give me a quick explanation on what I should do if your not sure I might have to take it to Best Buy, the reason I’m saying Best Buy is that my cousin works there and she said that they have a very good team that’s helpful with stuff like this so yea. But I don’t wanna keep spending money so I just wanna Finnish this myself.

Heya, nice vid! It is specific and yet to the point, which I like. I'm thinking of building a pc with an MSI MAG H670 Tomahawk Wifi DDR4 (it has a Flash BIOS button based on the manual). So once it updates to the latest BIOS using this version it should be able to run a 13th Gen CPU out of the box right? Asking because I'm worried I might run into some issues where a 12th Gen CPU might still be required (and I don't have access to one unless I buy it). Some motherboards (like the Gigabyte B660M Aorus Elite AX DDR4 BIOS version F20) requires an Intel VMD Driver update, otherwise the system might crash with the 13th Gen CPU, which isn't cool.
@KLEEBZTECH
@KLEEBZTECH Год назад
If you want to be sure I would look on their support page for that motherboard and see if any of the BIOS updates added support for 13th Gen. If it does you should be good.

Really appreciate the video - thank you:) I never updated the bios before I inserted all the components (including a new 13th gen i7) on my new Z690 Edge WIFI DDR 4 and keep getting a red CPU light blinking. Could not updating the bios be the issue? If so, should I remove all the components before I do the update? At the end of your video you say to not turn on the power if all the components are on the motherboard. Cheers
@KLEEBZTECH
@KLEEBZTECH 6 месяцев назад
You could look on the support page to find out if that CPU was not supported by early versions and might give you a clue but that is a good possibility. You do not need to remove the components. Just turn on the power supply but do not boot the computer at any point. You will just have the power supply in the on position so when you push the Flash BIOS button it will do the update.

When it comes to choosing the latest update, you are talking about the latest non-beta update, right? For my motherboard, there are two betas that have been released sooner but the latest non-beta update was released back in '19.
@KLEEBZTECH
@KLEEBZTECH 7 месяцев назад
Usually I would avoid beta unless there is specifically something in that update you need. Usually you don't need to update the BIOS unless there's a specific reason

Followed the procedure to the letter. I only got flashing lights on the board and the USB drive for maybe twenty seconds. I didn't want to disturb anything just in case it was still processing the bios update but just not signaling it was doing so. I left it alone for about 10-15 minutes before turning the power off and unplugging everything. With that relatively brief signal from the process could something have gone wrong?

I've waited 12 hours after flashing my bios, my pc is still on. I came to this video after following the steps laid out in another tutorial which near identical. The only differences between the videos was that I was not plug anything else into the board except the power cables and to not turn the PC on, well unfortunately both of those things were done. So when I press the "flash bios" button on the back of my motherboard, the light started blinking on both my usb stick and the flash bios LED. About 10 seconds later, the rest of the pc turned on without me pressing the power button with the red motherboard LED on, and it's been running nonstop with the flash bios LED blinking. I don't want to turn it off without making sure I don't brick the board. It's been 12 hours of it running constantly I'm very worried something is wrong. Hopefully I didn't ruin anything!

If it's been more than 30 minutes I can almost guarantee it didn't work. The only option is to cut the power and see if it worked or try again. I would probably try a different USB drive.
