i see a Jarrod Video, i press like. Love your content. Cant wait to get my hands on the gs66 during summer(now that i know(thanks to you) that you can undervolt ist)
Probably just MSI try to clear up stock for 2666mhz, most of the time memory speed won't matter too much when the laptop is severely GPU bottlenecked, just make sure its dual channel, even 2133mhz can go a long way.
now imagine 3200!!! thanks for doing this, been wondering forever. the reason it cant go higher is due to default voltage for VCCIO and VCSSA. Dell wanted to offer the precision with 3200 memory in 2019 but had to settle for 2933 after their internal testing. some laptops like msi or clevo will still take the 3200 XMP profiles are apply them
Yes, it's just suboptimal, once the 16gb stick uses more than 8gb it's back to single channel speeds which can result in inconsistent performance. 16gb is plenty for games today and will probably give more consistent results going 8+8.
Jarrod, can you repeat this but with 32gb (2x16)? I keep seeing a huge difference on other benchmarking videos compared to 16gb(2x8). If you do it, please make sure the timings are low and the same, and also both on dual channel to be a fair comparison as 2x8 and 2x16. Thanks!
You sir are truely in every sense of the word "genius" when it comes to laptop reviews...Never have i seen such professionalism and clear, detailed reviews...
I own the MSI GL65 leopard SFK with RTX 2070 graphics And considered changing out the 2666mhz memory to 2933mhz. I'm always doing some type of upgrade to my computers.
Hey jarrod,Should i get gaming laptop with Rtx 2060 and intel core i5 or with 1660ti and i7? I dont no what is better Ty fór answer. Btw.. you are awesome. :) :)
I'm annoyed that this brand-new laptop still has to reboot to activate the GPU switch. Didn't Nvidia literally just release a version which didn't have to do this? Why, MSI?
TheGoat It does automatically switch. OP is talking about the mux switch, disabling the Intel graphics so that the dedicated graphics are directly connected to the display (improves performance).
Yeah not sure why they missed advanced optimus, they did show it off at CES well before the Nvidia announcement, maybe they developed it too soon or something.
Hey Jarrod a heads up, I bought a new 10th gen Ge75 raider and it does have Samsung 2933 modules in it despite the official MSI spec sheet having 2666 listed so I am wondering if msi is multisourcing and some GS66s are also getting it :)
@Jarrod'sTech, when you say: " You don’t have to tune the memory, but by default most DDR4-3200 kits will run with slower timings than the 2666 sticks MSI are using." what do you mean the kits will run with slower timings? I have the 10sf-005us/GS66005 model and want to upgrade the ram from the installed 16GB of ram to 64GB of ram, specifically: Crucial 32GB (x2) Single DDR4 3200 MT/S CL22 SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT32G4SFD832A. Thank you!!
Hard to say as there are so many 10th gen models like Aero 15/MAX-15/Triton 500 refresh, so far it looks pretty good but would have preferred advanced optimus/nvidia dynamic boost.
Interesting video. Somewhat lackluster results, but the frequencies are pretty similar afterall so that's to be expected. Still good to know! The laptop I had before my current (Aero 17) was an MSI GL-72, which left me with a bad taste in my mouth after the keyboard went out twice and dead pixels were appearing in the screen. It looks like things have improved with the GS66, but I can't say I'll buy MSI again. The MSI replaced an Asus ROG laptop I had from 2011, which lasted a good 5 years of near daily use. Needless to say, the MSI only lasting 1.5 years was a bummer. I got the Asus used and the MSI new.
it was honestly a little faster than i expected my 8th gen went from DDR2666 CL19 single channel to 2666 CL15 dual channel and had an improvment under 10% in most cases
jesus jarrod is inlove with that thing maybe i should get one myself :p. also is the i9 core worth it? im checking the prices and the price difference from the i7 and i9 is huge so should i get the i9 or the i7?
@@JarrodsTech with about content making like Photoshop work. Would it be worth the bigger CPU and faster memory? And is it correct that the MSI gs66 didn't have g-sync?
@@JarrodsTech That too, yeah, but also because, let's say, I have an Intel 8th gen processor, and I'm "stuck" with 2666 MHz RAM frequency, and only RAM upgrade that is possible (in terms of performance), is to buy memory with tighter timings. These laptops almost always come with CL19 memory out of the box, but there are certain "aftermarket" memory kits that go up (down) to CL15. On paper sounds like significant difference, but it would be nice to know what it looks like in practice. Nevertheless, keep up the great work!
is something strange, in the msi web specificacions said up to DRR4-3200, but in intel its just support DRR4-2933. then why msi are selling ram with DRR4-3200?
I think production of 2933 ram is more inferior than the production of 3200 so that's what they did because it works both ways and it's a cost-effective strategy
My 2 cents on this is how much it bothers me that they put the Ethernet port on the right. I wanted so much to buy this until I saw that and it’s not smart with the mouse so close
Hellooo, just want to say u make amazing content and also I have a question. Would u say the gs66 build quality is similar to the Razer blade or is the blade way better built? Thanks in advance :)
Hi Jarrod This might be a silly question, but is it worth investing in a gaming laptop like the GS66 (or similar) for day-to-day use (not video editing or streaming) but heavy multitasking in order to get fast responsiveness while also being future proof? Will the cooling system of a gaming laptop be noisy and get to a point of being annoying? Thanks! 👍
Sure, gaming laptops generally means good performance, so good for other tasks, more info on the topic here: jarrods.tech/are-gaming-laptops-good-for-everyday-use/
Hey Jarrod (or anyone else reading this), I’m planning to upgrade in a similar fashion, just because the price of more memory in 3200 is basically the same as 2666 in my store. Did you only have to change the Real Time Memory Timing and Memory Profile settings? That’s all you have to do to get the timing to match? And it’ll run at 2933 automatically? Thanks for anyone who can help.
Upgrading the ram to a higher frequency can sometimes result in higher temperatures. This happened to me once when I upgraded an old gaming laptop ram from 12GB 1333mhz to 16gb 1600mhz.
do they have a 3200mhz for this laptop as well. also i have this laptop as well thanks to you my friend but if i upgrade the storage does this void the warranty. also can u do a detail video how to undervolt pls
My GS65 came with 16gb Samsung cdies and they ran 3200 just fine. I then bought some Samsung bdies (no brand) 2133 32gb kit and ran them to 3200 just as well. Could probably tighten more but too lazy 😁
That's pretty decent throughout really, I wasn't expecting much I would've thought margin of error for the most part. Does timing make as much difference? I have CL 18 2666 but wondering what CL 15 2666 would be like in comparison.
Awesome! Jarred, haven't you thought about creating a Discord channel where all the community could interact with each other? Also, I am looking forward to buy a Zephyrus G15 but the gpu 60watts scares me for future performance. I'm not a high specs gamer or will I be using overclocking etc. But I appreciate longevity, work performance and some casual games like final fantasy por cod. What would you recommend? Is there any other laptop for $1400 with the same value? Thank you
Thanks, yeah I'll probably set one up in future. Hard for me to say given I haven't tested G15 yet as it's not available in my country, I looked into importing it from the US but it was way too expensive so I think I just need to wait :(
hey jarrod i just got the gs66 and i am having an issue with the rgb keyboard it will not work the keyboard works fine but the rgb does not if i press function then the F keys do not light up like they should i have tried reinstalling the steelsieries engine app but it still does not work pls help
I had that happen randomly the other day, it eventually went away, no idea what caused it, reboot didn't fix, it just came and went 🤔 thought it was a one off issue with my unit.
I was excited for intense gaming during this lockdown. Now my laptop is over heating and needs re-pasting of thermal compound. Now I cry everyday and wait for this lockdown to end.
Hi thanks for the comparison . I have a MSI GE75 raider 8se, shipped with 1x16Gb 2666 cl19 ram. (my brother bought it from canada, send it to me in IRAN). later I add another 16Gb 2666 cl19 (chinese fake ones with crucial sticker on it) and it works fine. I wanna upgrade everything in my laptop to get the highest performance (repaste, add 2 ssds and faster memory). my problem is: can not find a 32Gb memory kit with low cas latency, 1.2v and dual rank in any brand. what should I do for memory upgrade? there is no information available about single or dual rank modules in their specs sheet. the only option I found is hyperx 2666 cl15. could you please make a video comparison of 2666 vs 3000 or 3200 with gaming ram kits like hyperx or g.skill with more info about memory rank and lower latency in 8th or 9th gen intel laptops. P.S. sorry for my bad English.
Please do review on another MSI 10th gen lineup. My request is GL65 Leopard with RTX 2060. I need some comparison between new GL65 Leopard vs HP Omen 15 RTX 2060 because the price is slightly interesting in my country. and because MSI is the first brand that bring the 10th gen lineup in my country store. I really appreciate if you do the review and comparison. Thank you
Jarrod...I've been watching a lot of your videos...I was wondering if you could add Ark Survival Evolved or Rust into your benchmarks. Just do single player then tell people in the video, depending on the sever fps may vary. Just a suggestion
Not related to this video, but I would like to know whether the following improve the performance of M.2 SSDs, since high-performance SSDs can get really hot? 1. M.2 SSD heatsink (not sure whether it will fit in the laptop) 2. M.2 SSD with a thermal pad that sticks to the lid (assume it is made of metal) of the laptop
Depends, you need to keep the controller cool but believe the actual memory itself runs better warmer, haven't done any testing myself one way or another though.
Hello. I'm going to be starting college, and I need a new computer. I don't have a very large budget, and I have found that the MSI GP65 seems like a good fit for me. Would you be able to do a review of it at some point? Thanks!
I have laptop gtx 1060 and in minecraft i get like 40 fps. But with my uhd 630 i get more. Its just in minecraft. Do you know if its something wrong with my gtx 1060 or minecraft?
Interesting my new may 15 u can overclock the ram to 2933 though more voltage may be needed for stability . The one thing I have is the 80 watt rtx 2070mq :( if I knewi would of got something else it's kind of annoying that they don't have the info on they're site .
Btw just a heads up, if they are still using the same 2666mhz samsung dimms they used in their earlier laptops , they are very easy to OC. Mine was running @ 3470mhz in my old GE75
@@JarrodsTech I don't have the exact model right now, will update today after I check some old screen shots (I don't own the laptop anymore). But basically went with the ram oc part of "the take control of your 8750h" guide on notebook review, copied it to the number and then went a little further with tighter numbers. But as I understood most of those Samsung ram were able to hit those numbers easily.
Be interesting to see the difference between running 16GB in duel channel VS 32GB in duel channel to see if it would be worth getting more than 16GB for gaming.
32gb is too much ram. Windows 10 OS alone uses around 2gb ram. So we are left with 13-14gb of ram which is more than sufficient. Even the biggest triple A title games do not require more than 8gb of ram. After that you are left with 5-6gb of ram which plenty to run other apps in the background like discord, some recording software and a bunch of chrome tabs.
James Bond in my experience 8gb is definitely not enough for triple a games, especially since windows running actually takes up more like 3.5gb of ram. 16 is good but it’ll probably be outdated in 2 years from now
I tested it briefly and saw no difference so cancelled the video as I didn't feel like wasting the full day it would have taken to test all the games, maybe some day just to show people the difference but eh, it was pretty boring.
Jarrod what gpu use that model? Rams boost its depend of gpu. Rtx 2080 model get huge boost at "cpu" games like bf5. I got 15% boost at frames compare 2666mhz vs 3200mhz. At my msi laptop. GPU load with 2666mhz 70%. Gpu load with 3200mhz 85% 90%. So that the rams helps the cpu bottleneck when we use strong gpu. If use 1660ti 3200mhz rams its useless
@@JarrodsTech well really will be very helpfully if u can share some information about gpu load at that heavy games u tested like bf5. And I thing the real step of upgrade will was 2666mhz vs 3200mhz. Stock rams of my ge75 worked perfectly at 3470mhz. The real upgrade was the 3200mhz. Just uncore +125 ,TRFC 570 TREFI 12500 and ratio x12. All the other settings stock.. Really huge boost to 8750h.. BF5 from 120 140, WWZ from 140 to 180. Anthem from 65 to 80 frames. I have some videos with the 3200rams. Ofc temps increased compare to 2666mhz cause cpu it's more effectively..but dont know if that gen 10 th cpu need that help from memory.
Hey Jarrod, I have the Alienware Area 51m and Dell has updated the bios and there is a 2933mhz option (Via XMP) . Should i buy 3000Mhz ram or i must go for the 2933Mhz ? Or should i go for 3200Mhz for the futur?
Is there even 2933 memory? If there is, it's probably pretty limited, 3200 kits would be more common, it will just run at a lower speed, so get what ever is available.
@@JarrodsTech yup there is 2933Mhz. The 3200Mhz Memory has a bad timing ( CL19- 22) . I wanted to buy Corsair 3000mhz with CL16 . What do think ? 3200mhz CL20 or 3000Mhz CL16 ?
Hi Jarrod. Hope you are doing well. Would you be reviewing MSI WS65 and Asus Proart Studiobook Pro X ? Which among them has better performance and thermal?( i9 with quadro 5000 64gb ram is my preferred model )
Honestly not sure on that one, I asked ASUS about the studiobook range a while ago but didn't get a response, at this point I might as well wait for 10th gen refresh 🤔
@@JarrodsTech I found that Msi Ws65 provide the best bang for buck in the workstation competition (Razer in not available in my country else I would also compared razer studio laptop).
I asked a question on the last two videos Jarrod, never got a reply. Do you think the rtx 2060 version will be much better temperature wise? and what would you choose between msi gs66 rtx 2060 model and razer blade 15 9th gen 2060 16gb ram, 144Hz.
I am no longer able to answer every single comment on the channel unfortunately, to do so would mean I would have to make less videos :( it might be a bit better, but keep in mind it probably has the same 80W TDP so probably not that much difference. I'd get this, likely cheaper than Blade (haven't checked) plus you can disable optimus which gives a nice performance boost.
@@JarrodsTech Thanks for the reply. I was just looking for a thin and light gaming laptop which can be used for casual gaming as well as school work. If you have any other suggestions. please let me know. Thanks
Can you please review Aftershock Vapor 15X with 10th gen CPU and 240Hz screen with new RTX 2070 Super. Cause i am gonna buy this and bit confuse to choose RTX 2060 115W or RTX 2070 super 115W. Thanks
Hi bro, I am having Acer Nitro 5 and it only supports 2666MHz RAM maximum. But in my country, 2933MHz RAM it's just 5 dollar more. So I think 2933MHz should be more worth it. But there is one thing I am worried of, since my laptop only supports 2666MHz RAM, if I put in 2933MHz RAM, would it damage my laptop or make the performance even worst? I really need your help here, if I were you, would just take the better deal or just take 2666MHz RAM to prevent any risk. THX a lot bro
Hey Jarrod, when you do your ASUS TUF A15 review can you please do a response time check. BOAT mentioned that the display has a very low response time but didn't have any measurable results.
Maybe. I literally just spent $500 to buy the tools needed to test response time properly, it's why no one tests it, you need custom expensive tools. I'm still trying to work out how to use it, but might be ready by the time the A15 arrives.
@@JarrodsTech noice. I watched your QnA for this month and the effort, quality and time you're putting into your reviews is getting really highly. Well done Jarrod and soon you might even need to hire people and become an official company that does laptop reviews. Seems like you have a big future ahead of you. Wish you all the best.
Do you know what might happen if I mix one 16gb 2933 with one 16gb 2666? I have a spare 16gb 2666 running around. Thanks for the video, just the information I needed.
I have a msi gs65 I7 9750h Gtx1660ti 16gb ram 512gb ssd Should I sell and upgrade for msi gs66 or new amd laptops this year, or hold on. Leaning towards something that can have better battery life for school work than the gs65, while capable for gaming .
I don't think it's really worth upgrading between single generations personally, but I will point out how the GS66 compares to the GS65 in the full review tomorrow which might help you.
GS66 review early next week, no G14 comparison at this time as my GS66 costs double the price and has a 2080, no point, maybe if I get a more reasonable spec.
I’m thinking about upgrading the ram on my GS66 to 32Gb however I’ve not done ram upgrades on laptops before. Would basically any 2666mhz or 2933mhz sodimm rams work? Are there any potential compatibility or stability issues?
Should be fine, very few laptops seem to be picky about RAM brand, Gigabyte Aero is one of the few. If you google it you might find other brands people have used in theirs if you want to know for sure something will work, people often post that stuff on laptop forums.
