Trigger warning, LOL. This isn't a slick video. It's a start to end (with some gaps) of how I did the mod to a gen 3 MT09 exhaust.
It was constructed over 4 separate days and my focus was on the mod and not the filming.
You can hear the outcome here • Yamaha MT 09 SP Gen 3 ...
This was done using tools I mostly already had and without cutting the outer shell of the stock exhaust. The total outlay was less than $300 AUD for the spare exhaust and consumables plus extra for some tools that will last me for decades.
I also set out to make it in a way that would allow me to pull it apart and modify it without a huge amount of effort. That's why the main parts are riveted together and not welded.
I don't feel that it was necessary to make it be able to be disassembled though. I did that as a precaution.
Now that it's done I feel that this is a mod that could be done properly by an exhaust fabricator pretty cheaply and given how successful the outcome I may re-make some of the components and get parts of it welded for a more professional finish... except that would mean removing the exhaust again...
Yamaha did not make that easy which is a surprise. There's no room to get to half of the bolts without removing the radiator and even the kickstand switch is in the way of one of the bolts.

hi, great job, could you make a video while you use the bike? I would like to hear the shifting sound. Thank you

Hmmm. I probably should try and record the sound when riding. It's pretty good from my perspective when riding. It's about as deep as a triple can be. Even the missus stated that it was really loud in a 2 lane wide road tunnel when she was in the car behind me.

I've seen videos of someone gutting a Multistrada exhaust. They cut the box open and gutted it, then welded it back together all neat and tidy. You did a good job though

Back in the 90's when the VTR1000 had just been released we were all putting open pipes on our big twins (I had a TRX850) I ran into a guy who's VTR1000 sounded a lot louder than it should have. He'd even been pulled over by the cops and they couldn't tell that it wasn't stock because it was actually the stock exhaust so they had to let him go. This guys welding skills were such that even though he had cut the exhaust open and removed half the wadding and welded it back up it looked like it hadn't been touched at all. Needless to say it was something I always wanted to emulate. Unfortunately the coatings and terrible welds that they put on the stock yamaha exhaust are so bad that there is no way you could cut and re-weld it and still make it look stock.

Nice outcome. How did you make the outer facia panels from sheet? Do you have any templates or models that could make it easier for me? Cheers

Just clocked that they're still the standard facias.... Nevermind 😂

Finished mine a while ago now. Turned an aluminium bung with a centre hole to fit the original pipes and guide the hole saw, saved a lot of time. Used two 45 degree stainless bends off ebay for the new pipes. The leg lengths of the pipes were more than enough

why not just cut the whole top off the muffler on the rear side and remove the tubes completely. re weld back together.

should have just welded the pipe to the cosmetic plate some exhaust paste then re rivet
@davidb3925

That's an option but one of the main requirements was that the flow be the equivalent of a single 50mm exhaust. Also I wanted the opportunity to modify it again If I need to. Welding to the cosmetic plates is a one shot only exercise.

Sooo much work ....why not just get a black widow?

1. more than 2 times the price. 2. Sticks out the side and ruins the clean lines of the bike. 3. Wrong tone. It's too buzzy. 4. Looks cheap compared to other exhausts 5. Will get me defected by the cops for excessive noise. At least with this mod I can claim that the cops hearing must be a bit off because it's the stock exhaust.

Well done. Tickets to you and you keep the stock exhaust that has the best sound just not deep enough. Really it's designed remarkably well and a feat in its self. Now come do mine haha.
