MTG Lore: Gideon Jura 

Whoa Gideons Spark igniting was not badly written or a missed opportunity. He challenged a God and Failed, the very people who have followed him died because of his recklessness that he's always had since childhood.

Gideon is actually a much cooler character than I thought at first. Without this videos, I never would've known how awesome he is! Thanks, seiben!

of all my search, this is best MTG lore teller on youtube who know his stuffs, and most important, with clear voice and easy to understand explanation.

In Ancient Greek, the iota is pronounced like a soft J. Also, the 'io' is what's called a dipthong where two vowels make a new sound. When pronouncing 'io', it's more of a 'yuh' sound. Therefore, it wouldn't be 'Ee-or-uh', as you pronounced it, it would be more like 'Yur-a'. Hence why it gets confused into Jura on Bant.

Thanks for the video! I really enjoyed Gideon's backstory and his tale is a pretty classic Greek tale of the hero who brings his own downfall (thinking be could take on erebos causing the death of his irregulars)

I just started watching your videos a week ago and I can just simply say that I love and am grateful for what you do I love the amazing storylines and the vast universe of MTG and you bring a lot of the questions and amazing background to light with your videos keep it up!

I overall really like his new origin, but you made exceedingly good points. There are some major oversights, not just nitpicks, but with things like the origin of his signature weapon, that is a real disappointment to fans of the lore. Great video as always. I appreciate your perspective as well as summarizing the stories in an interesting way for those of us with short attention spans (i.e. Me). Keep on keepin' on!

Well we actually got to see a little more of Gideon in the story "Project Lightning Bug." Apparently he planeswalks regularly to Ravnica to check on the Boros and the events there (which leave Ral Zarek and Jace Beleren a little uneasy) most likely from Zendikar when the Eldrazi aren't trying to kill some place (just speculation there though). I do have to agree though, I thought it was a very nice story (Young Kytheon is pretty entertaining), but it was a missed opportunity. The three battles back to back seemed rushed and repetitive and it is kind of a let down that his spark didn't ignite from at least killing the Titan. Of all the Origin stories, his causes the most confliction with past lore (Chandra's a close second). My biggest hope though is that each of the Planeswalkers get a continuation to each of there stories through the rest of July-August. It feels like there's still more to uncover about their pasts.

The new story was pretty interesting but from what you told us at the end about his old origin's story, I like that one so much better. It would have been amazing to include a fight with a god in his new story. His friends deaths leading to his spark just seems like the same situation that lead to a lot of planeswalkers sparks (Liliana and her brother, Chandra and her parents (along with almost being executed). Still was nice to finally learn a little bit about Gideon. He was one character I did not know a lot about so thanks for the video!

Good video. BTW, there was a lore in uncharted rhelm about Ral Zarak and Jace with their Niz drama. Gideon made a cameo. Correct me if I am wrong, Gideon is still in Boros at the time.

I was surprised to find out the white planeswalker for origins was gideon and not ajani, i have a feeling they're hyping him up for zendikar.

I think Gideos is gonna die on Amonkhet, I remember seeing his official lore and that begins with him saying that, laying on the floor shadowed by Nicol Bolas... And you know what happened at the end of Aether Revolt's story? They decided to go confront Bolas!

When they originally released that they were using Gideon as opposed to Ajani as the white planeswalker for origins, I was slightly disappointed. But after reading this story on uncharted realms and hearing it here, I take it all back. Gideon is a beast!

I agree with this video completely about his storyline , but I feel it was changed so that it would be better flowing rather than just epic . Anyhow great video I knew almost nothing about him beforehand

I feel like Gideon could have easily fit in with the noble people of Bant. Him coming from Thereos was a neat touch. Although he seems like he was never really tied down to any plane and I would have rather had wizards focus his later lore more on a single plane. I hope they make up for his lore in the new zendikar set.

Gideon's lore is really sad, and I like how they made it so his name wasn't Gideon at first, but I think that really added to his lore.

I've never used Gideon in a deck, for white i usually prefer Elspeth. But, its interesting to hear the back story.

i thought he meant his home as gideon "reborn" on bant, his adopted name and plane, not the home of kytheon from akros. its still mostly the same, the changes are alright, just made it easier for new people to understand i guess. nice vid :)

Gideon's story, particularly his Spark ignition, was meant to reflect Greek hero stories, particularly how many of them die because of their hubris. Icarus and Belerophan are perfect examples.

i do like that he gained his spark after such - Tragic Arrogance - was such an emotional moment and am sad that his weapon was changed and unmentioned :(

Hey Siben great video This one has been your favorite out of all of the your plasewalker Origins video. The length of this one was amazing . I feel like it was the most disappointing thing Wizard's has written of the 5 I felt like the theory of the Green red god. Love your video's and hope you have a great 4th.

Regarding the lack of a red-green god: WE see the lack of a red-green god, but it's not like the Therans see that there is a lack of anything. They just see 14 gods. Also, regarding the similarity of the planeswalkers: Remember that the spark is ignited by an intense moment of emotional/physical stress. It's not surprising that they ignited similarly with "someone close to them died"

Actually he is theros but the company that did the game did not get actually info from wizards wizard however did apologize for the misunderstanding

What if.... The reason the back stories are different because of the events that happened in the last block? With the time line changing due to ugin living this could have changed to happenings on all the planes a butterfly effect if you will.

Please do one for Tezzeret? I know we haven't seen him since Mirrodin Besieged, but he is interesting

I wonder how the author of Purifying Fire feels about this retcon of Gideon since he was her creation. This new Gideon feels like a male copycat of Elspeth.
