Join me as I take a mudlarking trip to the River Thames in London and search for historical artefacts from the past. On this outing I am particularly fortunate and find 3 coins. I recognise one as being Victorian but the other two are mysteries until I get home and clean them off! Can you ID them before I tell you what they are?
It's amazing what you can learn from the objects you find in the Thames mud. In this instance, I learned some interesting bits of info about the Monarchs on the coins! There are also a few other artefacts which you might be able to help me to identify!
You can follow me on twitter and instagram @tidelineart to see more of my mudlarking finds.
Thank you for watching and if you would like to buy me a virtual cup of earl grey tea (with lemon) then you can donate via my KOFI account which is here:-
ko-fi.com/nicolawhitetidelineart
If you are tempted to try mudlarking on the River Thames then you need to have a permit from the Port of London Authority and you can find out all the details you need here:-

Thank you.

Thank you for all your wonderful comments. If you would like to see some of the stranger things that I have found in the River Thames over the years then you can check out this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rVxncipNvvY.html

Thank you Nicola. I have seen that video before but much of it was forgotten, like the turtle rib. No way was I gonna name what that was. Such an unusual find. The Fiolet pipes stir curiosity so plan to look them up searching first through the Great Exhibition. One thing leads to another. Just as a side comment.....if you ever come to Melbourne, we have a large house with two spare rooms. You may use them to keep your accom cost down if you have a mind to. Aussies are a very friendly bunch and love to help out where we can. Our Yarra river is not much of a search area but there are lots of creeks and streams around the old gold mining areas where relics may be unearthed. Nothing as old as in England of course.

Unbelievably, Walter Whiffin is one of my relatives. As soon as you said the name I knew he was in my family tree. He is my first cousin x5 removed. My 5th Great Grandfather who was Richard Whiffin b 21 May 1769 in Westerham Kent was Walter’s grandfather. I am an amateur genealogist and have been researching my family tree for almost 20 years so have managed to do quite a lot of research in that time. I can’t believe you found a button belonging to/made by someone in my tree. Simply amazing!

That particular French coin was made from melted down old naval guns. So the metal in your coin was a naval canon from a ship of Louis the thirteenth or even earlier.

Hi Nicola! the "mystery coin" is a 6 deniers piece (nominal equivalent to the English "sixpence" but bronze), this type is called "dardanne" and was struck only under Louis XIV of France (1643-1715), I think in the few last years of his reign. In the center of the triangle there is a letter, it is the mintmark, it seems to be "K", which is Bordeaux mint. They are rare in high grade but common in worn condition. I recall a "dardanne" was one of my firts "ancient" coins when I was about 10 or 11 years old, my aunt bought it for me in a flea market here in Buenos Aires!

I love seeing these videos from England. I have never been able to travel there. But I am 1st generation born in the United States. my mom came from England. After World War II she travelled here. with her mum and dad. The history that you can touch in England. is so much older than anything we can find here. It is so exciting. The antidotal information that you shared. Totally puts it at the top of all mud larking videos I have seen. 👏👍🌞

Nicola, This was an excellent video, I loved your finds and your information, it added so much to the presentation. I follow the Mudpies from Bristol, Father and Daughter, I commented on their new mud christened shirts and how the mud was able to preserve so many things. Josie wrote back and said it's really more a clay rather than mud, but claying the Thames or Thames Clay larkers really doesn't work:) That poor Cormorant, I wondered if it would be able to ingest that Flatfish, but I wasn't surprised the enterprising gull got it! It's a bird eats fish existence. Cheers, Rik Spector

Love all your videos which, along with the videos from all the other mudlarking community, have turned us away from the "BOX". Hope you continue for years to come. Another wonderful video, Nic 👍 Those coins were amazing. Also, St. Louis, MO, and (pretty sure) Louisville, KY, were also named for Louis XIV. On a side note, I want to thank you for continuing to take us on your mudlarking adventures, especially during this past year. Yours was the first mudlarking channel that I found and followed years ago, and you’ve taught me so much about the hobby just by watching your vids. They’ve been a wonderful and welcomed distraction during this crazy past year for sure - I love how you point the video at the foreshore and encourage us to look for the finds. I think I can speak for many of us that your videos have allowed us to escape the immediacy of our daily reality and feel like we’re in a real adventure. You’re providing a real service, and I thank you very much.

love your contents with a mix of history on the treasures you find. FYI, use a bright flashlight ( torch to you) hold it at 90 degrees to flat surface, may show some unseen details. over here in the colonies I'm a metal detectorist and this works on most coins or buttons. unless it's a Slick Rick or his brother Blank Hank then forget about it. I'm amazed at the amount of treasure you find looking at your studio which if you think about is a sad statement about how Human's got rid of their trash through out history, chucked it in the river, for how many years? 1000+ best to you this coming year, has to be better then last year. keep looking down, be safe.......

Always enjoy the 'can you spot' moments - and can virtually never see anything! It's so different looking at mud rather than pebbles on a beach :) You tend to train your eyes for different environments I guess... Take care, Nicole & Craig

Hiya, I'm laying back in bed watching yet another one of yr amazing videos. I'm so jealous, I'd love to go mudlarking but sadly, I live in Australia and nothings very old. 234yrs old would be the oldest find you could make of anything Anglo Saxon. Of course there's artefact from our First Nations People but finding them are hard and removing them illegal. Youve taught me about clay pipes which amaze me that there 2,3 or 4hundred years old bloody amazing. So thankyou for yr entertaining videos and the wealth of knowledge you empart on us all. Cheers ✌🌻😊

The only intact pipe bowl I ever found looks nearly identical in size and shape to your 1700's one, but mine has no heel. I found it on the shore of my local town, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Canada, near the 1700's English Fort Anne. If I've correctly identified it, based on yours, it is a rare and very early find for here.
