Summit Racing did some testing at Magnaflow that intrigued me. In the newest On All Cylinders podcast ( share.transistor.fm/s/ee5ba4e5 ), Justin and Dave from Summit sit down with Rob Waitas from Magnaflow for questions surrounding exhaust systems.
Can a Muffler Outflow a Straight Pipe?
“That’s probably one of the biggest misconceptions out there. People are so used to seeing a race car that has open headers-that dump right after the collector. And the idea is that ‘high performance’ is noisy and loud, and made with the least amount of parts.
“But as we’ve seen on the flowbench, the straight piece of tubing actually flows less than a perforated tube, straight-through muffler.
“It is counter-intuitive, but counter-intuitive doesn’t make it not true. Folks say they want a straight pipe because that’ll make the most power, but if we’re talking about power generated from flow capacity, that’s not necessarily the case.
“The common thought is that a muffler equals restriction, but in some cases it can even enhance the airflow.”
The guys do a test on a Flowbench with 18” long piece of 3” straight pipe vs - the first picture is the straight pipe at 635 cfm of flow. The second is the straight thru perforated muffler at 669 cfm. This is way over my head but really makes me want to do alot more research, lol.

If you are new to drag and drive style events, think of it like Two Lane Blacktop (you know, the old movie with the horrible ending). The participants of these events will drive their car from track to track, on public roads/highways, allowed only to use the parts/tools they bring with them in the car or in a trailer towed by the racecar. You must be self sufficient to compete in this type of endurance drag racing! There are no trucks with trailers that are following you to pick you up when you break.
