Just a friendly heads up to people. The free to play character seems to switch on a weekly basis. Shaggy, Jake, Harley and probably some other characters I'm forgetting were free to play last week Edit: way too many people have read this and got confused and I straight up got something wrong. It's every two weeks (sorry I didn't know when I wrote it I had only been playing a week) and if you unlock a character for any reason they are permanently yours. So if you unlock Shaggy for example you never have to worry about him being rotated in or out. As of the time of writing this I don't believe there is any way to actually unlock a character if they are on the free rotation and so you have to wait for them to be rotated out. Fingers crossed I'm just straight up wrong on this or that they fix it soon.

Holy cow this is surreal! I'm a dev currently working on Multiversus and seeing a game I've worked on have its own "Before you Buy" is an absolute dream moment.

When comparing this to smash, you gotta remember, smash has had 20+ years to refine and improve. This is the first Multiversus game, and its still in beta. I went back to play smash 64 again a few days ago, and it definitely feels more chunky and unrefined than ultimate.

I've been really enjoying this game. It does a great job of differentiating itself from Smash by adding in enough aspects to give it a unique feel in gameplay. Definitely needs a little love but you gotta remember it's being compared to a company that's been doing this for like 3 decades. I'm hopeful and will continue to play after the beta ends!

I love the tom and Jerry moveset and how it looks like Tom is just tryna attack Jerry the whole time

I see big things coming from this game as long as they listen to their audience and work with what we suggest to the best of their ability. Super excited to see more characters and stages as they update this game

To add onto the pricing for the Founder's Packs, it basically breaks down to $40 for a sort of "basics" pack, $60 for the full game plus a few extra characters, and $100 for the full game plus a season or two of character releases. When I consider what I've spent for other fighting games like Smash Ultimate, Guilty Gear Strive, Dragonball FighterZ, or King of Fighters XV, the pricing isn't too unreasonable. The netcode is top notch, match making is simple, and the game just works, which is more than any of the games I just listed can say.

The gameplay is great and manages to set itself apart from Smash while still being accessible to hardcore and casual players. The only downside here is that the cosmetics are overvalued; for example, the Batman: The Animated Series costume costs $20. Anyone getting into the game should avoid the founder's pack. The value just isn't there for any of the three tiers. You can unlock new characters pretty quickly just by playing, so save your money for when you see a skin that you really want or get the battle pass when the season starts.

This is my first time ever being excited about a platform fighter. I generally like the more hardcore fighting games but this entire roster makes me smile and I love that it's free because it's keeping a constant player base.

I think the reason for the stages being so basic in terms of their layouts is because of the game's focus on competitive play, but it would be nice to have some more creative chaotic maps for some kind of casual game mode maybe.

The game is really good with a lot of charm. I'm really enjoying it and even bought one of the founders packs to support the game. They might not be worth it from a financial point but its nice to not have to grind for characters for a while atleast. Really recommend this game!:)

I got this game just because the Iron Giant was a playable character, ever since i was a kid I have wanted an iron giant game. and this is as close I'm gonna get

A few corrections. When you talk about the modes available, you forget the free for all, wich is the standard smash affair with everyone fighting each other. Also about the perks, you unlock the ability to equip whatever perks your ally has pretty early on, so it's not that much of a disadvantage if you don't have many perks yet. And lastly, the characters available are on rotation, so the ones that are available now might not be available next update, its not great that they don't mark them as being free for a limited time, but be aware of that, only Wonder Woman is truly free.

I think you missed a lot of things. Offline this game is fully unlocked with all perks. The unlocks are only for online play. The $40 founders pack is a great deal to unlock every character for online play with the tickets. The 300 glem is for a battle pass since you have all the characters. $40 for this game is a fair price. The netcode is amazing and consistent. You failed to mention how the movesets change in the air to make a more diverse move set than smash. This game is much more technical which will be seen in competitive play. Every character in this game has a unique move set that is tailored to them with every single move. Tom and jerry is probably the coolest character made for a fighter I have ever experienced. The skins in the game are expensive but they also have different voice acting attached to them as well. The F2P aspect is standard and not that predatory at all. It takes a small amount of time to actually unlock a character. Also there is a free rotation if you want to try them online too. I know from a casual perspective this doesn’t matter, but the competitive aspect of this game is so much better than smash. The company has already made a huge push for tournaments. Nintendo has actively hindered competition for smash and that difference is huge. Mutliversus is more comparative to brawlhalla except it has actual IP’s.

FYI a cool feature is that if you do local custom matches, the whole roster is available. So you can play with any character in couch coop with your friends or kids (you still have to buy the cosmetics though).The only bummer is that there is no AI/bots for the local matches (hopefully they add that after the beta)

I was just playing this game for the first time with some friends last night and we had such a great time with it! I’m a huge fan of the game as its free and is definitely casual while still being competitive!

I like that MV made the option of changing the UI layout! Also more characters please!! What did everyone else like about it?

This game is great! I played it in the Alpha and in the Closed Beta and it’s only improved since then.

The character tickets in the founders pack permanently unlock fighters so the base founders pack gives you 15 fighters not just 300 premium currency also the top tier founders pack has 30 tickets so you will unlock 30 fighters as well as getting the 1st 3 battle passes ontop of the premium currency so they give more value then you have them credit for

I believe this can one million percent rival smash (character wise) i rlly want them to go into the vault with this one. Gameplay feels a bit crunchy but im sure it’ll be ironed out soon

Been playing a ton with friends and it's definitely fun! Not predatory at all, not hard to unlock more characters. Really impressed with all the audio dialogue between characters

I downloaded this, didn't pay for anything, and saw that it has a local four-player offline mode and that all the characters are available to use in that mode. So if you don't want to play the online modes, you can download it and just play with your friends.

I like how it’s still before you buy when it’s no cost

Y'all might not be in love with the gameplay but I certainly am. No platform fighter has ever hooked me like this game has with it's gameplay.

The founders pack is to "buy" the game with all the characters + DLC characters. It just has additional things attached to it, like banners and glemium

On the free to play aspect I think context matters. Where I'm from most people don't make enough money to be buying games outrightly and so stuff like this is pretty welcome. It allows us to actually try out games and genres we would never take the risk on because we can only afford to buy 1 game a year

I've got 50 hours into this game so far and I adore it. Going the free to play/Games as a service route does mean that things will be drip fed to the community, but I honestly believe that is to its benefit in the long run. Fighting games often just front load with all the content and drop 4 characters in 5 months. This game is going to be adding stages/characters/perks and more rewards for progression at a pretty steady pace. The fact that Lebron just dropped a few days ago, and Morty is coming on August 8th with a Rick & Morty stage is just awesome. I truly think this is a special game and has a chance to really stir up a necessary change in the fighting game genre. Positives: Team oriented gameplay Cross-Play Cross-Progression Character classes Perk system that stacks with teammate A huge pool of characters to add and play with from WB A new Dev Team full of some super awesome veterans and amazing character animators Free To Play - means you can get your buddy in to try it with ease A full lab mode that lets you play with characters you don't even know yet or try on costumes you haven't purchased. Great net code as well. Also, all characters are unlocked for local play as well. Tutorial and Advanced Tutorial available

So far, I am loving Multiversus. I have brought 2 friends to it already and they love it too. I am happy this is F2P because that is a low barrier to entry for players. Those who choose not to invest money can enjoy it, but there will always be those who invest money and time into the costumes and extra cosmetic stuff that helps the company fund the future characters and content. For it being new, the game came out more polished than a ton of games nowadays. I mean heck, there are like 20 new characters confirmed which they will be releasing periodically. My body is ready! Give me Peacemaker character and Rick and Morty! Haha.

I'm not much for fighting games, but I'm really excited to just watch the character interactions. Giving me Iron Giant getting Superman and seeing how many of the original voices were in it is what sold me (hearing so many of William Hanna's screams when Tom is KO'ed certainly helped)

Bought the founders pack to support the devs, Hoping to make my first content on this game.. hard to break through as a creator these days without some niche gotta fix my channel and twitch but such a great game to try and start with. Even if it's just streaming

Its very good and fluid and has smooth animations and graphics and they already gave me my most wanted on the roster from doing training lol. So all i need is more stage variety more meaty hit feel at least a bit, and more characters but ofc smash will be untouchable by this competitor but smash is exclusive and not free

I love this game and would have gladly paid full price for it… but alternate costume and animation prices are egregious.

Make sure to research who you buy with the gold you get at the start, if you can splash the cash and get the founders edition you get character tickets (15 or more depending on level) This will sort you out for the next character releases

I've played the game since the closed apha and I can tell you, the perks help,but are not that OP how you made them sound, is all about skill, I had so many matches where I played a lvl 1-2 character with no perk and still beat lvl 13-14 characters, all you need is to understand your character,,range, abilities and everything in between

Can’t stop playing this! Definitely give it a try. High replay value with good characters so far . Game has so much potential. This could definitely be a game that stands the rest of time if the love is poured into it. Rick and morty being announced is great. Definitely looking forward to the future of this game. Finn and Garnet main btw lol

I bought the premium founders pack. Not because I wanted it but to support these amazing developers. Absolutely amazing game. I hope and pray it lasts as long as smash bros does. :)

I love this game so much it rewards good user combinations and aggression punish spammers with attack decay and nk blocking and throwing so no more block and counter like smash slow build tactics for a fighting game unlike multiverse where it's all out brawl having to dodge and hit left and right

The character tickets unlock characters so each pack has x characters you unlock as well. It's permanent as well across seasons they have said all progress and unlocks carry over

I think the real perk is all of the Tom and Jerry dying sounds

I was kind of excited for this. I'm a huge smash fan, but I'm always open to competitors to play with my friends who don't own the switch. Sadly, I have yet to have a match that didn't lag out and disconnect me.

This seems like it can be a success. Started playing overall fun so far movesets fun, just personally I wish there was a bit more I dunno like zippyness to it. Like overall it kinda feels I'm moving and attacking with a rock tied to my feet weighing me down. Maybe it's just something to get used to, but for me a bit heavy feeling.

Free to play is 100% the way to go with this game. It's currently in beta and I know people that have more than half the roster unlocked just from playing. The skins being expensive sucks but that seems to be the only way they'll make money so I can get past that. Most people only play 1 or 2 characters in a fighting game Max. So just people won't even bother unlocking some characters. Also all the offline modes are FREE. All the characters, future characters included, are fully unlocked in offline modes of any kind. Practice or playing with friends. That gives you a chance to figure out what characters you like and don't like. Now you know who not to spend your coins on. This model just makes sense for fighting games.

Love the continuity of the artstyle, really smooth animations, and voices for the characters. It's really exciting to think of who could be added here. And speaking of that, if Reindog IS part of the Neverending Story universe, than we better get Falkor!

It feels so damn floaty to me. And I feel like hitboxes are really hard to tell, might just be me. But there’s fun to be had with this for sure

I played the " early access " and found it to be pretty fun, I did run into some issues at times but overall enjoyed the game. I definitely hated whenever anyone played as Taz though ( before the nerf )

Great BYB, Jake. I just wanna chime in here and say I never would have played this if it was full price, or even $20. I typically avoid platform fighters all together, even smash, as big of a Nintendo fan as I am. I usually just suck butt at them and find them overly complicated. However, because this was free to play I gave it a shot, and loved seeing the roster. Yeah, it's weird and doesn't feel as cohesive as smash, BUT, it's so cool to have connections to all of them across various forms of media, and see them and the (few) stages realized. I actually prefer the Steven Universe and Adventure Time treehouse because they're just as iconic as the Batcave to me. Guess my 25 year old is showing? Haha. Last thing: The music, especially in the aforementioned stages, is breathtaking. I love hearing some of the themes from the show orchestrated into these epic tunes. Oh, and one MORE last thing: praise be to any game that allows you to buy announcer packs. Seems so silly to me as a long time League fan I still can't purchase anything like that.

9:15 the founders are mainly about character tickets which is pretty damn cool, you can save the tickets for future characters and unlock the ones you want immediately.

I want this game to be good because even though none of the current characters are enticing to me, WB has such a huge portfolio of characters that they can use and would make this an insane multiverse game if they steadily built the roster up in the coming years, which I'm sure is the plan

I have high hopes for this. It plays decently for a beta tbh, graphics are atleast fun and entertaining, and obviously I want more characters. But I’m rarely competitive but I find myself loving to hop on a run a few matches atleast every couple of days if I have time too. As long as you can still ACTUALLY play free and get good in time I’m happy with it.

I think the F2P model fits a fighting game like this pretty well honestly. I never really like it in anything, but for something like a fighting game, it's great to be able to pick it up & play it for free to see how you feel about it. I am pretty competitive at these so when I felt it was buttery smooth I was all in. They did a really good job at a first attempt at this

Gotta disagree about the 40$ version being a bad deal, true you don’t get enough gleamium for a full character, but you get 15 character tickets which is enough to unlock all playable characters right now. The gleamium can then be spent on the pass, and you can save up gold for characters coming out in the future

I love how tom is always trying to get jerry whilst also fighting his opponent

Batman is so fun in this game he plays so well and the fact they got Kevin Conroy too voice him is the cherry on top

I really enjoy playing this game if you have four friends it very fun to play against all of each other and watch the other person rage😂

It's very fun, of course the pay with real life thing is annoying but the core foundation is solid.

They REALLY need to make it so pushing up on the analog is a jump. I might be the only one who feels strongly about this, but I can’t wrap my head around the controls without that yet 😂

I like that it's free to play. And you can get all characters from the cheapest founders pack (around $30) and it's quite easy to get gold to unlock characters. Yes, spending $20 on an alternate outfit is too expensive but it doesn't make EVERYTHING bad.

I hope they do more for the game and thanks for the review. It seems like you guys did miss that the founders packs gives you character tickets so you can unlock the current and future characters with out the currency.

The fact that they decided to go free to play rather than launch a full game kinda reveals their motives off the bat actually. Why fall for it?

Not just a couple..there’s literally 17 to start with after James was added. I’ve noticed a few glitches here and there. But over all I’ve been digging it. Once more levels and characters start rolling out this is really going to be lit.

I think the thing we have to accept about this is that this is going to be the closest we get to smash bros on other consoles (excluding the emulators on a pc) and it is just something we will have to deal with

I was never a big fan of knockout games like brawlhalla or smash, but this games pretty addicting and fun while also being unique. I can seeing it last for quite a while.

Honestly, I love it. Its a great pick up to enjoy with friends and grind for the character you love playing as.

I was kind of disappointed they don't seem to have any FFA game mode that counts lives down instead of knock outs.

Couple of things left out. There’s also a 4 way 1v1v1v1 mode and there’s a mage class which only includes bugs and tom and Jerry so far.

***FOR ANYONE CURIOUS ABOUT ACCESSIBILITY OPTIONS*** . . It's actually surprisingly versatile. You can see in some of this footage of 2v2 matches, there's three colours on the characters. One for you, a separate one for your ally, and a shared one for the enemy team. Each of these colours can be changed around to whatever's more comfortable for you. I personally make myself cyan, and my teammate a darker blue, with my enemies at yellow. You can also change each player's outline thickness, because this game may look a little confusing in tight fights, it really helps to know where you are. As for the HUD, I'm gonna reference this footage again. You can see the icons with the names all on the top, and the damage and names on the characters. You can have all these attributes in the one place, or in both places, or you can just pick and choose. If you wanna keep the names out of the way because your chosen colours and outlines are already good enough, you can just set them to the icons, or not show them at all. If the damage numbers get in your way and you wanna be able to see directly under your character, you can just set it to show on the icons. Additionally, the entire upper HUD can simply be moved to the bottom of the screen too. As for audio, you have your standard Master/Music/Sounds/Voice bars, but you also have subtitle options. Similar to that of Overwatch, you can show all subtitles, or just the battle indicators, or just the fun banter between the characters. The controls, which you could expect, are very decent. I don't play many fighting games, so I don't know how standard this is, but you can change all controls. While there is a button each for Dodge, Attack, and Special, which can all also be pushed to the left and right, there is an optional bind for any of them to force it to be neutral. Meaning if you wanna run and attack, but you want it to be a neutral attack, you can instead use whatever you bound the forced neutral, so you can stay on your movement button as you do it. Hope that made sense. You can choose to tap-jump, and there's also two separate checkboxes for if you want to swap the neutral and side special in either the air, and/or on the ground. I haven't used that one, but some characters make me feel like I should. That's about all I can remember, but I'm happy to double-check if anyone has more questions. Otherwise, the game is free and when it asks for your WB account, they do all the connecting work for you, so go ahead if you don't mind seeing for yourself. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, anybody else.

Definitely some good SBMM going on. These games look FAR less hectic than the ones I get into. First day, I was kicking butt, second day games got turned up to 11.. I'm honestly pretty sweaty when it comes too brawlers and watching this I could tell what was going on, in my games everybody is strafe dodging and pumping out combos every move lol we're just flying and throwing each other across the screen.

I was excited. I heard "microtransactions" "free to play model" and they lost me

I've played about four hours in 1v1 on Xbox, and it's fun. Wonder woman has been a great starting character. I need more time with the game to form a critical opinion, but it doesn't feel generous with the earnable rewards and unlocks, and the pricing is all over the place.

With the price being so high it is understandable because just the 40 dollar edition comes with 15 free charcter unlocks and if you do the math that's 10,500 worth of gems (just make sure if u buy it to unlock the cheaper characters with gold and use the unlocks to get the expensive ones)

I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoy this game. Definitely excited to see who all gets added.

I actually like the stages so far tbh. I like simple stages that give big space to fight and aren't moving or small platforms. The more detail or things going in the stage, the less attention on the fight imo

I played an hour and a half of this and I'm totally impressed that people are finding this any fun. I really hated everything about it.

It's worth mentioning that those character tickets in the founder packs are the entire reason to buy them. The lowest tier is 15 character tickets in a roster consisting of 17 fighters, soon to be 19. You can save the tickets as well for future characters. I would hope that nobody is buying them for any other reason and really I only see value in the lowest tier. I think that's a good value. My only complaint personally is that the pricing for skins is a bit too expensive. They do the traditional thing where a skin is $15 USD but they only have currency packs in $5, $10, $20, $50, which effectively means you need to spend $20 to get the skin unlocked.

Good review. But a few things. First of all, im not the biggest fan of platform fighters like this, however, this has been pretty fun aside from the server lag. Next thing, I truthfully don't get why people complain about buying skins, battle passes, etc. The game is 100% free. You can obtain every character simply by playing. I haven't spent a dime, and have all the characters unlocked already. I don't even play much, I work 80 hours a week with 3 kids and still have all that unlocked. Third, to address your complaint about this business motto. Selling a game for a price tag isn't too viable anymore these days unless you're and insanely large AAA studio with 10000 employees and an insane amount of funding, this team is not, player first games is not a giant studio. I know a lot of people see the publisher is Warner Bro Games but Warner Bro Games DOES NOT = player first games, a disconnect a lot don't seem to understand. Again, I truthfully don't understand the complaining when it comes to purely cosmetic transactions, NO ONE is forcing you to buy it, this is just a way for the game to have a long life span. I can promise you this, if Fortnite cost $20-$60 (yes im aware originally it did since it was a PVE game and not a BR) But if the BR cost money, and didn't have cosmetic micro transactions, the game would of fully died YEARS ago, and thats from EPIC. Just my thoughts based on some facts.

this game is absolutely great, I love this game even with the small bugs, I know it will improve down the road but it's a blast to play! I think it's better than smash brother

Didn't have a hard time getting characters I want. Just make sure to use the lab to test the characters you want. I really like the f2p model.

Really don't like how difficult it is to unlock characters. Plus after a game it prompted me to buy toast, but I thought I was awarded toast (not knowing what toast was) and spent about 2000 gold on that thinking that it was something I had to claim. Other than that I thought the fighting was super clunky and weird feeling. I'll probably try it again after a few updates.

Fun game but stages are terrible balancing is nearly non existent the hit boxes in this game are horrible and the community so far seems like this is there for first fighting game there getting into and there crying about annoying spammey like attacks but I haven’t seen any one say a word about Harley Quinn being able to press X over and over and get a infinite combo

The controls n gameplay take some gtn use to but once u start gtn the hang of it, gameplay gets smoother n smoother the better u get. I'm actually having a lot of fun with this game. It has MAJOR potential.
