We've all heard it before, stick to one sensitivity to get good aim and if you change it you'll ruin your muscle memory. If this is true though, how can the best players change their sens all the time and still aim well?

Especially after all the comments I got on my accel vid telling me that I was wrong actually because accel ruins muscle memory. Musclememory exists. But specific to aiming, it can hinder your progress. So it helps shape skill when we train on different sens-ranges.

honestly always beat myself up about changing my sensitivity so much. I think I got so obsessed over the fact I keep changing sens that it overall made me worse because I focused more on sensitivity than the game and this REALLY helped me realize that. for something that's pretty "common" in this community it's something someone newer to it like me really needed to hear. I appreciate it viscose you never let us down:D

Keep at it. A lot of it just comes with repetition. Aim trainers are helpful too, but I also hit global in CS just playing the game. Always liked death matching though, so my aim got a good deal of practice and so did my other mechanics.

I have recently plateaued with my aim, and I’ve thought about messing with my sens but didn’t want to mess with my “muscle memory.” Thx for giving me the push I needed. This was very nice video. I don't play competitively but I've always had the thought that sensitivity was a sort of compensation for an individual's mouse movement. The idea to switch mouse sense to train weaker areas while being consistent to what you're doing is a very solid idea.

great video! I've been considering making my own video about the topic. but more specifically how having good aim isn't about having perfect muscle memory for every possible flick, it's more about training your hand eye coordination and i really want to emphasize the eye portion. I think a lot of what makes a good aimer is having sharp eyes and the ability to tell your hand to click when the crosshair moves over the target

Interesting points I'm glad I was shown this perspective. I was actually looking at this software which is similar to kovaaks, but it has a major feature which would fine tune your settings each training level inorder to find your most comfortable fov and sens. But now I'm considering on just training arm wrist and fingers accordingly instead

And i have a question should we use 3 sens for training like one high for some specific tasks and one slow for an another ranges of tasks and the one actual in game we don't really change ? or should we just change the sensitivity higher or slower randomly while aim training ? i hope i don't confused you on what i ask ^^"(sorry if i make some mistake on my writting, hope it's readable =) )

I agree, for pure aiming like you do in aim trainers it's completely fine to change the sens all the time. I used to be hesitant about it when the belief of aiming being muscle memory was prevalent a couple years ago but actually doing it and changing sens every couple minutes while aim training made me realize that it only takes a few seconds to adjust to a new sens. But in actual games that are not just about aiming it does take me longer to adjust to a new sens so i avoid doing it and if i do it i stick to the new sens for at least a couple days. Games are so much more coplex than just aiming. After being on the same sens for a while i'll know exactly what motions and timings i need for a specific rocket jump so i can do it without even looking and instead I can check the game UI do get information on what my team is doing for example. On a new sens i could still do that jump but it would require my focus to not screw it up so I wouldn't be able to check on other stuff while rocket juming. And also knowing your sens and optimal engagement rages is helpful. On a high sens you'll do better up close and on a low sens you'll be more precise at long distances. And intuitively knowing what ranges give you the highest chance of winning a fight is valuable. The strat of rocket jumping behind a player and then moving around them to make them run out of mousepad won't work if you play low sens because you'll run out of mousepad first. So you'd have to change up your playstyle if you change from high to low sens and that takes time. I feel external factors like skate wearing down and humidity don't really affect the aim much. Humidity, maybe on some pads but I use a hard pad with a sleeve there shouldn't be any difference. And my skates do get slower as they wear down but that process is so slow that I automatically adjust to it without even noticing. Only when I put new skates on the difference is noticable but in that case only the friction changes, not the distance i need to move the mouse. So how far i can aim with just the wrist, fingertips or before i run out of mousepad space doesn't change which does not require me to change up how i play. Maybe in games that are more about just aiming and in which you can't pick your engagement ranges as freely, changing sens more often is fine but in Diabotical and other area fps i always feel like i need to relearn the game on a new sens for a couple days despite me constantly changing sens in aim trainers.

Imo it depends on how skilled you are at the game that should determine whether staying on a consistent sens is better for you or not. there are still benefits to maintaining consistency, though knowing aim theory should help massively at determining what's best for you, especially in the long-term. As the more skilled you become, the less it should matter. having the same settings in different games may not necessarily be a bad thing if those settings closely approximate to the average sens across those games overall, i rock a ~55cm/360 setup on average and for me it's actually a perfect universal sens however i do have a comfort range too in case i might be better off changing it eg on ow i use 50cm/360 although im only good at valorant and in that game i use 65cm/360

@@TechSupportDave she wasn’t really trying to disprove it. (I know that’s not what you said). She’s saying that it’s not dependable as different factors can affect your aim, in a fighting game or while playing instruments, this isn’t really an issue because things will always be in the same position and require the same amount of pressure relatively. If you’re on a mousepad on a humid day, movements will require more force than they will on an average day. Basically practice low and high sens for better control overall.

@@Kay_OC In an aim trainer, for sure! It has been over a week but IIRC the video goes over the benefits of changing your sens in aim trainers, while the purpose may be to develop muscle memory, due to the dynamic aim requirements in pretty much every game, improving your overall mouse control will prove to be far more useful over only focusing on improving on the sens you play in-game. It's kinda like with chess theory - knowing the theory isn't exactly bad, but you may not be able to apply certain aspects of it due to how rarely they may occur.

i learned to 'recalibrate' from steel, change up your sens by going to the range getting some reps in on high & low then go back to og sens. helps get rid of that doubt and makes it feel 'fresh'

Great video, it just confirms things I’ve noticed in my own aim. I’m super consistent and comfy with low sens (60ish cm) and playing on a high sens (20cm) has actually improved my aim with the lower sens. I’ve found my wrist activates more now on low sens and I move more fluidly even in games like apex. I used to use Brax’s Sens 81cm w/ default csgo accel, but now I can change anywhere from 25-60cm and still be comfortable

You helped change an idea I acquired through people in voltaic which was that I should run tracking at 25-35 switching and dynamic at 30-50 and static 60-80 I still think it’s good to train at those and I have seen drastic improvement but I know I am weakest on 25-30 and maybe I should train that on all scenarios for awhile to see if I gain improvements

Are there any guides for training with different sensitivities? I use around 69cm and since I mostly play CS and Valorant it feels comfortable but this makes me interested in trying a variety of sensitivities when training to improve in different areas.

Do you put any pressure on any part of your arm against the desk? I find that this kinda makes my mouse control better but adds more friction. Do you think this is a good aiming method? Or should I just rest my arm lightly on the desk?

I've been waiting for this video ever since you mentioned it on twitter a few weeks ago 😭Love the quality content as always, I have two questions though: What do you think about higher sens requiring a longer warmup, and more frequent playtime in order to keep up in consistency with someone who is on a lower sens? For example, if there were two VT GMs, one at 40cm and one at 50cm, and they both got busy in life and started having less time to play, would the 40cm player have a much harder time staying consistent? This is the main thing that is preventing me from switching to a higher sens range in general, because even though I enjoy it more, I'll have points in my life where I'll have a lot less time to play compared to now. Also, do you think posture and arm/elbow placement starts mattering more the lower your sens gets, due to needing much more stability and flexibility in your whole arm?

thank u! the first question is interesting and I think it depends on the game + how they trained, I think the one with better overall mouse control and more playtime in general would remain more consistent, instead of it being dictated by sens. and probably! i developed my current odd style of using armrests as a pivot point bc of how low i used to play in cs

my reference point is the following. place the mouse in the middle of the mousepad, moving the mouse to the left or right edge of the pad results in a 180°, which means I'm able to look behind me quickly at any given time. I had similiar thoughts after a 7k hrs of cs, and then playing for fun other games, like cod ( with faster movement etc ), then obv got into aim trainers but not really for long - I just prefer to train in game itself. But you used a good words to describe that! Today, my sens doesn’t matter that much, I can play between 80cm/360 to 35cm/360 and the adaptation time is really short. I watched also Bardoz take on similiar topic, where he says about sticking to one sens, it might get you more consistent, but it all comes to overthinking mid-game I guess, and focusing on that aspect apart from match. That’s a good video and thank u for that, will come back def. XD

Well thought out and comprehensive point of view, just as the rest of your aim related series. Another aspect of aiming is making the right decisions, having back up plans, escape routes, traps, physical and mental preparation, like visualizing your plans before the competition, or not blaming self or other factors, but instead focusing on figuring out the mistakes while playing, finding a balance between aggressive and relaxed playstyle, etc. I'm in my 50's and I overcome my last plateau by switching to fingertip grip and ultra-light mice, I change mouse pads more than the average player and I've used accel on and off, but mainly if my setup wasn't ideal, and if it couldn't be fixed with a different mouse pad, skates, grip style, or a brand new game :P

as someone that’s only 20 ive always worried that i would get a lot worse at the game and lose most of my reaction time as i get older. As someone whos older and still into gaming what is your opinion on this?

@@Slidy_ You get slower with age, but one hardly ever plays against pro players in pub games. Reading the game is just as important as pure aim and reflexes, you have to find out what works best for your unique blend of ever improving skills, so it's dynamic, and imho, half the fun, especially if one also applies it to his mental and physical conditioning and in general life balance.

Good video other stuff worth mentioning is how demon1 apparently did his aim training on a different sens and hes regarded as having the best aim of all the pros.. also you might laugh but I have a theory about ADS/scoped sensitivity like what if its a form of like "bio hacking" or whatever because in the study wasnt it said that the changing of the mouse sens was like making the brain more engaged and focused on top of reinforcing said motor skills? So wouldnt constantly going between different sensitivities (hipfire/ADS/scoped) just be "proccing" this "effect" in a way?

I some how have always been one to change around with my sensitivity, not because i felt bad or uncomfortable, but because I felt the change in the amount i needed to move the mouse made me focus harder on actually doing the right movement which then lead to me just performing better than usual. I do the same with resolution. I also love playing around with extreme values like a very high or low sensitivity, which doesnt neceserely make me play better but when i return to a normal value my aim is always on top. And everyone i play with always says that i should stop doing it because it is hurting my true performance i could have if i was just sticking to one sens. But from my experience that just isnt true and my aim isnt destroyed just because i play around with my settings.

I've noticed that in like 2014 while playing CS:GO. One day I decided to change my sensitivity and I adapted to that super quickly and it felt really good. Every so often I change it when I feel like I can't relay on my aim anymore

I think most accurate way to call this phenomena is neuron connection developmet, basically repeating a task makes it more automated and faster to do trough muscle being more "connected to brain". So it doesnt matter if you change your sensitivity, as neuron connection is still there, and it'll recalibrate to fit your mouse sensitivity after a few minutes

Changing sens from game to game has been the best change I’ve made to my aiming since I started aim training. Forcing myself to play 27 CM on every game tanked my performance in TAC FPS games like Valorant. Now that I’m fine w using a lower sens in Val, my performance shot up drastically.

Love the content first time seeing this i knew this was a good video its casual and informative originality i thought that this gonna be person that show some bs script you told us the issue and explained it first and then gave answers a big mistake that people do is assuming they know the basic of it or do a reallg long this explaining way longer then it should but you provide a problem in a short distance of time and still had enough to still explain some answers and show proof and linked so we know its not bs and from other people stand points

Personaly the problem i have is that i put way too much pressure in my hand so reactive tracking a target is pretty hard on battlefield meanwhile i don’t put as much in other games like the finals or overwatch so i will have to work on this a lot

Solid video and thoughts. But I think there is an obvious winner since the top players in pretty much all fps,es do not change their sens at all. The only one doing it is basically tenz.

I never thought about it that deeply, but I still use a og sensei and it has a button that let's you switch between 2 cpi presets. I use 400 for CS and 800 for basically everything else (Cod, apex, battlefield, etc)
