Muscle Recovery: How Effective is Collagen Protein- Thomas DeLauer… Collagen plays a critical role in building new muscle and recovering from whatever workout it is that you're doing. Whether you are hitting the gym because you're trying to put on muscle or whether you're going to the gym just because you're trying to stay alive, you are still asking a lot of your body. You're asking your muscles to build new fibers to grow, to actually accommodate the training that you're doing. You're asking all kinds of different things to happen with your connective tissue. That's why I want to look at collagen and the role that it plays in muscle recovery and overall muscle growth, as well.
You see, far too often we look at protein in general. We just look at whey protein, pea protein, vegan protein, whatever. We just look at protein and we think that that's all we need to recover from a workout. But the reality is that we have a lot more going on in our bodies than meets the eye.
All right, so let's get into the science of what happens. First of all, we have to look at when you work out, you are always eliciting a little bit of a microtrauma to the body. What does that mean? It means that you're breaking down muscle fibers to a certain extent. You're asking the body to basically tear muscle fibers so they can regrow a little bit stronger. But a lot of people don't realize that collagen plays a much bigger role in that than what we really think. We usually think that collagen just plays a role in our cartilage or our connective tissue and things like that. But if it wasn't for the collagen, we could never actually build the muscle properly.
See, two things are happening when you're breaking down muscle fibers. You're having a regeneration of those muscle fibers, kind of a replication of cells, which I'll talk about in a second, and then you actually have a production of scar tissue, connective scar tissue, that allows this to happen. If you've ever gotten a massage before, you know that they're working through some scar tissue. A lot of times the masseuse will tell you, oh, you've got a lot of scar tissue buildup here, et cetera, et cetera. If you're someone that works out or you've just been through a lot of stress where your muscles are tense, you develop scar tissue. And although it seems like a bad thing, it truly is just your body doing what it's supposed to. It's supposed to be trying to protect you, so it makes your muscles a little bit tougher, a little stronger, and sometimes they build up tough and strong in the wrong places and you end up with these bad knots, plain and simple.
But collagen is a huge co-factor in that process happening and what allows us to actually recover. There was a study that was published in Europe PMC that took a look at how the body uses collagen in recovery after an intense workout. What they did is they put subjects through an intense workout, and then for three weeks they measured their collagen synthesis levels. Not their collagen levels, but their actual synthesis levels, basically looking to find out how much of a demand there was for collagen.
What they found is in the first week, there was a huge demand for type III collagen symphysis. What this means is that type III collagen was there to actually stop the trauma, to help the healing process, to start the muscle on its road to recovery so that it could be healthy. Then, the rest of the time of that three week period, there was an increase in type I collagen synthesis.

Thomas I really enjoy your videos and I appreciate the amount of time and work you invest in your channel. I would love to see you produce a “getting started” series. I feel you give sound advice backed by science and personal experience. If a person in their 40s or 50s found your channel & they wanted to improve their health. What steps should they take? Intermittent Fasting, Ketogenic Diet, Working out, supplementing? Your video on the Lymphatic system and keto is the only one I have ever seen that discussed this link and I have watched a lot of videos. Thank you for sharing your wonderful experience and life changing story.

Cut out processed foods, carbs, and sugar and becuase your older I would say the workouts need to be low impact so it wont be so hard on your joints. Swimming exercises and a light weight lifting program might be good. Running and jump rope are hard on the joints so stay away from those. Also mix it up and find something that you enjoy to do and dont see it as working out. I practice boxing and kickboxing and Im focused on technique instead of getting tired and its fun for me so it doesnt feel like im working out.

Also yoga is really good for any age. I know guys tend to see it as for women but over the years soometimes you do the same motion for your job and start to build scar tissue in your muscles and yoga helps with that. Something to look into as well since your older

I also add Collagen Type 2 - hearing that it plays a critical role in connective tissue development (ligaments, tendons, cartilage, etc.) I too would like to see him present on the various collagen types!

@Thomas, I have just watch a Ryan Raynolds RU-vid video where he said he trains 3-4 hrs a day. I have heard other actors also do 3+ hrs a day training sessions, while 'normal' people are told 45 minutes/day is enough and more than that could be counter-productive. Could you, in some of the future videos, shed some light on what and where the difference in training and nutrition is?!
@MrBurakOzel
@MrBurakOzel 6 лет назад
no need for a new video. body adapts toeverything. i know a woman can workout 20 hours with 1,5hr sleep and eat literally nothing being in great muscular shape. ofc they (those actors and who works out everyday) dont jump into that kind of torture. they gradually increase the frequancy of their workout days and lengths and load to the point they have no problem whatsoever doing it every day for 4 hours. anyone can adapt to that, and thats where trainers fuck up sayin *"you need to rest this much days between w/o's and that amount of sleep mendatory and you gotta see this kind of dreams for max gains blah blah"* bull. shit. just dont jump into training everyday with heavy shit.

Working out everyday is effective. You have to consider what your lifestyle and occupation is and how much energy that it takes. A-list actors have more financial resources to buy the cleanest food they need and supplements. If a film requires they need to be a certain physique, the training is worked into the schedule. Filming has long days too. When off-camera, they have more time on their hands, outside of business meetings trying to push projects and stuff like that.

hi tom, im curious if there is any information about "how much" autophagy one might be looking to aim for to "fully" clean out "all" the crap in your body? that is, if we are saying autophagy is eating up and cleaning out and recycling old/damaged/dead/whatever crap in our body, and lets say for sake of conversation that fasting for 3 days equates to cleaning out 5% of the total amount of crap you might have in your body, so then maybe you would aim for 20 such fasts in some period of time? or maybe it would be more like 50% or...? and i wonder what kind of time frame we are actually looking at for this for how long it takes crap to build up again? and then i guess the other question would be if constant intermittent fasting is good enough to keep you tip-top at 100% ? any data on this sorta stuff?

Collagen has its benefits both as a pre-workout and a post-workout supplement. Collagen in your pre-workout shake can protect your muscles, joints, ligaments, and bones, boost your endurance, flexibility, and performance, and help you reach your daily protein goals. It is also highly beneficial in recovery, as it helps you're muscles, bones, and joints to recover faster. Collagen is also rich in the amino acid glycine, which helps you to sleep better and is key after hard workouts. Collagen also plays an important role in lean muscle building, Many people find collagen helpful in weight loss since the extra protein keeps you feeling fuller for longer, which minimizes hunger pains.

I use a powder, mixed with distilled water. The colder the better with the water so that it doesn't gel too quickly in the glass. Amazon sells it. Bovine Gelatin by Bernard Jensen (I buy this one because it's kosher). smile.amazon.com/Bernard-Jensen-Bovine-GELATIN-14oz/dp/B00014EO2A/ref=sr_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1535113939&sr=8-3&keywords=bovine+gelatin&dpID=41owFgJuX%252BL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

Sip a good cup of real bone broth (chicken or beef) after a work out and your done. No pills or powders to buy and if you make it at home you know what in it and more importantly what's NOT in it !!

I am 55 years old. I train hard 2 times a week and do pretty intense hot yoga 3 times per week. I take 1 tblsp. Of collagen powder in the am with my coffee. Is this enough/ is their such a thing as taking too much. Skin,hair nails and joints are great - been taking this for two years. Thoughts?

Dont fix what isn't broke. Yes, there's the possibility to taking too much collagen but you certainly dont come close to that even if you used 8 spoonfuls every day.

@Thomas Delauer do a video on Tribulus Terrestris i am really curious as to what you may think of it. As for me it works quite well and in 3 weeks of using it im already up from 85lb dumbell presses for reps to 105lb dumbbells i also feel my testosterone pumpung just hpurs after taking it. As a side note i take 3 pills at each time sometimes twice a day instead of the serving size of one twice a day.
