If you've been into collecting mushrooms as long as I have, you probably have found a few cases where the Latin names have changed, even as the common name has been pretty reliably stable. I first found blewits over fifty years ago, and even then, different mushroom guides had them assigned to different genuses.
Yes, DNA in particular has lead to taxonomic changes in most groups. Mostly, this has been a good thing, but it can be hard to know without a deep dive into the scientific literature (not every proposed change is a good idea).
The scientific names of funga (the correct term, as not all are latin) can be difficult to master, but very helpful when remembering qualities and identification. Good job on making this video. I trained as a tree surgeon back when you had to know all species by their scientific name. Another good video, thanks.
Best production I've seen in a very long time. Everything out there is mind numbing and idiotic, this is by every means, the complete opposite. Thank you for giving my brain the first nutrition its had in months on RU-vid.
can you do a series where you try different non-sterile growing techniques to see if they work? one I've tried that worked pretty well is the ben's-brown-rice-tek by '90 Second Mycology'
I feel its important know the latin names of anything because common names unfortunatly can be mixed up with commonly known species of animals, plants or fungi. So i completely agree with your stance on the importance of Latin names
Would be nice if you went through the different genus' and discussed the characteristics of each one. Maybe a video for each genus and the common species or top 10 of that genus. Love your videos. Need to make more, lol.
Nice video! I wanted to point out that some of the terms used in the binomial nomenclature do not come from Latin but from other languages. Rhododendron and derma are Greek words, for example
Found a white dapperling in my back yard this past summer and took a beautiful spore print for my collection. Leucoagaricus leucothities if your interested lol
Hey Tony, I hope that you can help me: My main RU-vid Channel (Another Perspective, 38k subs) has receives 3 strikes in 2 days claiming that "mushroom growth time lapse" shows illegal content (drugs). A review of RU-vid brought no solution. I got another strike for a video about shiitake mushrooms. Any idea why youtube is starting doing this? I have upload mushroom time lapse for 8 month now getting 5k-30k views and now it seems as all mushroom content is getting taken down and channel are striked out of the youtube game/business. This very small channel also got 2 striked for mushrooms video: RU-vid deleted them by saying it shows "drugs". This might harm all mushroom channels earlier or later: I guess you have not gotten any strikes yet?
Great informative and funny contents in this video, just as for all of your videos. Just one glitch...the genus name is Canis not Canus. Just being picky, though.
I had 8 years of Latin in School do I have an Easy Time to remember the scientific Names. Also im sorry to say your pronounciation is very Bad like Most english Speaking People.
