Thanks Tommy. I'm a retired watch and clock maker your videos always brings back fond memories. Reading the comments below if maths is not for you there are web sites where you just put in how many teeth and pinions on the wheel and it is worked out for you.

Whilst the physical work is fascinating so is the maths. After all, a clock is a means of calculating numbers into something we understand without thinking about each time we glance at one. Great video.

I've just begun my journey into thw world of horology, and your videos have been fantastic for getting to grips with the mechanisms involved. So far I've only had my mitts on relatively simple 20th century movements, so it's nice to get a real look inside some of the more esoteric varieties of timepiece. Textbooks are nice, but seeing the real thing is much more informative. I wonder If anybody has any recommendations on good books on the subject, Laurie Penman's handbook is the best I've come across so far, and while it IS very good, It's always nice to multiple sources of information, especially when learning a new skillset, it can save a lot of un-learning later on!

Tommy, what is the maximum possible degree of accuracy attainable on a long case pendulum Grandfather Clock ?

It entirely depends on the quality of the clock, it’s condition, it’s environment and how it is handled. A top quality regulator with temperature compensation etc is going to be seconds per month, a standard longcase in top condition will be seconds a day, but with a large variation based on temperature.

@@TommyJobson One does wonder, that with the modern day benefits of CAD and computer calculated, laser cutting C & C machinery, why would it not be possible to manufacture a mechanical watch or clock with accuracy equal to a quartz movement ? Surely someone like Roger Smith or the other gentleman (Sorry, name escapes me at moment of writing) are trying to make some sort of "Superlative Accurate Chronometer," which can attain this goal. Why not at least be able to make a clock and a watch which operates free of the need of any lubrification ? Did not Harrison use lignum vitae wood in a clock which is self lubricating back in the early 18th century ? Why can't someone not follow that lead ?

It’s been done and will be done again, Watch this space for the regulator I am planning to build in the future. Your original question was to do with the accuracy of a Long case clock, that’s a totally different ball game to precision regulator territory.

@@TommyJobson Fair enough, but I must admit I am completely unaware of any mechanical time piece which has an accuracy equal to a quartz movement (???) 😳😳😳Can you name the model and make of watch that has such accuracy ? I should think this should be possible with today's tools and technology. I also look forward to your regulator design and build project Tommy.
