In his score for the 1989 "Batman," Danny Elfman only had one main theme. However, we was able to vary and mutate it to fit the story's needs without running the original theme into the ground. Find out how he did this and more in this episode of Composer Toolbox!

I own nothing.
Enjoy!

The entire score is almost a masterful set of theme and variations. Amazing.

Great analysis as always! Those small details are the reason why we love Danny Elfman!

The love theme opens with the same phrase (e.g. at 12:38) as the Raiders of the Lost Ark theme.

What is the difference between the Batman theme and the Love theme?

HELLO !!! Congratulations for your great work, I appreciate it very much, I am learning a number of details that make me very very grateful with all your analysis of the soundtracks that you put on your channel. I have loved Danny Elfman music since I was little, and it would really be a dream if you could ever do an analysis of Edward Scissorhands (Ice Dance). From Spain, Thank you very much!

Interesting that you posit that Joker doesn't have his own theme. I'm no professional musical analyst, but I always considered his theme to be the twisted variant of Batman's theme heard most clearly in "Waltz to the Death", with his motif being the one heard at the end of "The Joker's Poem". This is why I was confused when in Lego Batman 2 - and the movie adaptation thereof - Rob Westwood gave him his own theme, most clearly heard in "Carnival" (WACKYJOKERACT.OGG, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-27IbFlUeBPM.html), since LB2 more commonly uses and builds upon Elfman's themes (and Williams's, to a lesser extent). "Waltz to the Death", while certainly derived from the Batman theme, is very much its own theme, similarly to the relationship between "Anakin's Theme" and the Imperial March. Derived, but not a mere variant.

Good job! This is really interesting. I know the music pretty well, even though I've honestly never seen the movie. I also read in Emilio Audissino's book "John Williams' Film Music" that this is considered a neoclassical score.

You should watch it. IMHO best cinematic Batman film. Plus, it's one of the most comic accurate adaptations - an homage to the first 11 issues that introduced Batman to the world!
