This is some of the best musicianship I have ever heard. Ever. And I'm not good enough to completely grasp just HOW good they are! I cannot think of any other group that uses such complicated rhythms and changes. The dynamics. The vocals. They all possess a level of mastery that is rarely found. The artistic thoughts they have in any given moment come out of their instrument instantly. Great reaction to a stellar performance!
@@SteveOGRock ..we are excited to see you get hurt! (OFFCOURSE not..) - but you are in for an awesome ride. Its an amazing piece of work. Again: looking forward to it! (hint!! ;-P)
I'm amazed at the fact that I've played this song almost every day for the past year and I'm not sick of it yet. It has me in quite the chokehold. Everyone is amazing in their respective roles and parts. BUT THAT BASS, THOUGH!!! I really don't think there's much Henrik can't do or any style he can't play. He'd probably disagree with that, as he often talks about stuff he doesn't think he's good enough at and I'm just over here like "dude, you're a wizard". One of the other things I love about him is his level of chill when he plays. He may pace back and forth on stage, and maybe a slight head bang here and there, but for the most part, he's chillin'. He makes it look so easy. I love that about him.
Right there with you, Jamila! I've listened to "Next To You" HUNDREDS of times since it dropped two years ago and I've yet to grow tired of it. I continually marvel at Henrik's bass playing and how incredibly in-sync it is with Aron's drumming. It's like they're psychically connected!
@@DougRawady yes, identical twins-style connection 😉 , uncanny. Henrik once said that he and Aron used to practise together for hours… and it makes all the DL pieces sound so tight!
Jamila, totally agree, that song is so endlessly listenable…. And Henrik playing chill, yeah it’s uncanny especially when he’s rippin off those crazy runs and riffs. I think it might have to do with hours and hours of practising and technically being on top of his game, whether what he believes (that he sucks in so many ways) is true or not ;) It sure helps being relaxed when playing fast. Yeah, he’s one of the world’s most humble and musical bass players, I reckon.
@@DougRawady When they were in college, they used to practice together for 5-6 hours/night, 5-6 days a week. They were legendary for their insanely disciplined routines of picking two new grooves every week, and practicing each of them 3 x 30 minutes every day they practiced together. I listened to a Swedish podcast, where they said they took turns being the one who had to get up early on Mondays, when the new practice room booking sheets for the week came up (it was paper based back then), and book them their 3 allowed hours each, back to back, for the whole week. The interviewer, who went to college with them, said that when he came to book, there were always 6 hr slots booked for them, and it was always the same handwriting booking for both of them that week. 😂 I guess that kind of practicing does tend to get you very well synced to each other. 😊
I agree with your observation that, given their just off-the-charts musical ability and staggering technical prowess, they never--none of them--seem to be showing off. They play what fits so immaculately in the song--what the song begs for. It's a gift of just immeasurable magnitude that each and every one of them has. It really is lightening in a bottle. Thanks for the GREAT reaction!!
Steve, you might agree with me in the fact that there is nothing that sound like this guys in the music market... great reaction bro, I would like to see your mind blown by reacting to the song **work shit out**
So fun, played Next to you for my dad today, first time he heard Dirty Loops. He got instantly loopified and when i told him they play in our city on may 30th he just said "let's go!". So we're going to our first Dirty Loops concert then 🤩
It is always such a treat to watch you reactto great music. The first thing you said when the song was over was the same thing I said upon my first hearing this tune...."fuckin' elle" What else can you say????
Oh yeah. Fun music is back!! These guys are next level. Stupendous musicians, songwriting and production. Steve, thanks for opening my horizons to this group. Nice reaction, dude.
WOW. I must have missed your other videos for these guys because I would have remembered this! Holy hell... I'm hearing Prince. I'm hearing Yes. I'm hearing Duran Duran. The drummer is giving me all kinds of Stuart Copeland vibes. Just such a rich and vibrant tapestry of sounds happening in this song. I'm sold. This immediately made my playlist. What's most impressive is that as crazy and wild as they're getting, it never felt show-off-ey or corny. Does that make sense? It never felt forced. They're playing at such a ridiculously high caliber but it seems so effortless that you can allllllmost forget how hard that shit must be in the moment. Just wow. This is killer.
@@danielstromberg7260 just gave Dave Weckl a listen and he's really something! Ghost notes for daaaaays. Incredibly clean. Don't see many people play with a traditional grip nowadays. It always catches me off guard. Thanks for sharing! I def hear the resemblance.

Really love what you are doing with these DL reacts...... This was pure joy..... Now we need you to feel pure HURT. .... BEEAKDOWN should be next...... Amazing.....
Trying to verbalize the feelings I get every time I listen to anything by the Dirty Loops is a fool's errand! When you think you've heard the pinnacle of their virtuosity and musicality, you hear a new piece by them and realize you'll always just be scratching the surface. I get such a thrill whenever I see/hear someone just getting into their music and having similar reactions to mine when I first heard them is as much of a joy!
I saw them on TV about 8 years ago and was instantly hooked. They played in the middle acts in a program called Melodifestivalen (Eurovision Song Contest) but the competing songs were so simple compared to them. Since then I have followed them and hoped to see them live, and now I get to do it in May in Stockholm 😀. @Steve, you should also listen to Aron and Henrik's hobby project "Songs for lovers". Jonah is partly involved to.
I played drums 40 years ago and couldnt do anything near what he does! I seen ELP in Philly a few times and thought Carl Palmer was great but this guy it right up there. Go Birds!!
Delightful reaction! :D That choir is indeed just them. Or actually, just Jonah. Henrik (the bass player) said the following about writing Next To You, in an interview in BassMagazine: "That song took forever to write. Aron and I wrote the chorus in 2016. We found it in a drawer and tried a bunch of new verses with it until we got the right one. Then at the last minute, Aron wrote the gospel choir parts. He sent a very funny demo in which he marked where all the different gospel parts come in and what kind of voice they had. When Jonah recorded them, he had a chalkboard with all the different characters in the choir, and he distorted his voice to match each character and so none of them would sound like him. The groove has our typical, swung-funk, triplet feel, but the key is the Bootsy funk formula of having a heavy one to make all the subdivisions after it work. Aron wrote the chorus bass line, which is keyboard bass-like, and it worked best with a combination of fingers and slapping." If you want to read the whole interview, which gives a wonderful insight into their process and the creation of the EP Phoenix, just search for "Henrik Linder Songified", and it should pop right up. :)
Oh, and I'm looking forward to your reaction to Work Shit Out. If your'e amazed by Aron (the drummer) in this one, Work Shit Out is going to blow. Your. Mind! :D
@@SteveOGRock The whole Phoenix EP is worth checking out. World on Fire and Breakdown are the two other songs that you haven't (unless I missed it) mentioned from that one. They are just as stellar as the rest of their works.
Lotta, as always super interesting! Thanks for that. There’s nothing like a bit of history and perspective to any piece of music… will definitely check out that interview! And it shows again how all of their pieces are such intensely collaborative enterprises, which in itself is wonderful… Thanks again 👍
Was anxiously waiting for this reaction, Steve, and it's a brilliant one! Can completely relate to the joy you felt listening to it for the first time. For what it's worth, I feel that way EVERY TIME I listen to it! It's the personification of "feel good" music. You'd have to be a corpse not to be positively impacted by the performance these guys deliver here.
Thanks for the reaction. I just love these guys so much.... listening just makes me happy. Check out Old Armando had a Farm - it's an instrumental w/ just Henrik and Aaron - so funny, so fun. (And do read the credits, if not with us, then later. They're almost always salted with really funny stuff.)
Yes, Aurora, and the credits for this song also showcase some of Jonah’s beautiful backing vocals and harmonies. I always love listening to them in particular xx
love this song too... I teach music, and this music makes me cry with joy.... I'm not in the same universe in regards to talent, but I can definitely appreciate DL... so amazing... comment on 'having fun': some musicians look too cool when they're jamming, but these guys are having fun!
Big thanks for a brilliant reaction and great breakdown. This makes me happy! Looking forward to Work Sh-t Out. Thanks again, and have a great weekend.
Could'nt agree more 🙂. This is 8+ minutes of Gods wisdom, in terms of musicianship... This is the vibe and Joy missing in a lot of productions nowdays. So, Bro, next in line to check out must be Work Shit Out or Breakdown!!
"My heart is filled with joy"... you said that when reacting to Band-Maid "Dice". And now I feel the same watching this amazing band/song for the first time. Thank u! Btw... Fly Eagles Fly!
oooh..I love this. Supert tight and the musicianship is insane. The 90'es vibes are strong for me, and it is great. The snow is melting in northern Norway, the sun is out, and your reaction is charming and joyful. (See what happens when you steer clear of the depressing screechy stuff?) Have a great day!
You got yourself another subscriber! Absolutely awesome reaction, and I especially love how you manage to react during the song without even interrupting the flow or talking over it. It's a joy to see your reaction to these songs, keep it up! Cheers from Sweden :)
You have an amazing ear and point out things that I didn't notice even after listening to this song many times such as the sound off the snare. You also have an excellent and unique way of expressing your thoughts describing their individual talents as well as their overall vibe as a band. Since you obviously are blown away by the awesome bass riffs, you also need to add to your list World on Fire and Bitten by the Kitten. I am just a simple drummer but can't get enough of the Hendrick and Aaron combination.
It’s that groove and sweet, sweet funk that got me. They are so ridiculously good. I’m not quite sure how many genres I just heard, but they were all amazing!
Dude, your involuntary noises have propelled you to the top of the list of reaction content creators. I also love your knee jerk "delicious" comments. I taste sounds too, bro. Keep em coming.
Hahaaaa! I enjoyed this comment immensely. The good news is that, as you pointed out: these noises are entirely involuntary so you can expect more of them in future lol. I try to be articulate where possible but sometimes my skeleton gets tickled by sounds haha.
Your reaction was exactly how we all felt the first time as well. So many tasty musical nuggets here. Keep going! Check out World on fire, Breakdown, Rolling in the deep.
Apparently these guys got together when they were in Music College. . . I sure hope that these three were the BEST students in that college. . . Because if they weren't, I want to hear the ones that WERE the best students!!!!
What a great reaction. You have informative commentary while sharing your infectious, very genuine joy in the music. Nice. i'll mention a couple of things that undoubtably will get mentioned a few times but those of us lucky enough to have been on the DLoops train for a little while are very fond of the Loops canon. First off all the vocals were done by Jonah, while much of the vocal arrangements came courtesy of Aron the drummer. The credits at the end while supplying a bevy of information, frequently have little demos of the bands quirky, yet wonderful sense of humor. I was a drummer for fifteen years and I feel like Aron consistently has one of the best snare sounds ever. All the songs you have lined up are great. Recently I've really been enjoying one of their older songs -"Wake Me Up"-. It starts in one really nice spot and ends with...well you'll just have to give it a listen. Great work and thanks!
I've had the luck to discover them before their first album (back then they became famous via covers on RU-vid) and could see them live here in Berlin 2 times. They really are astounding and my absolute favorite band!
”He’s plucking my soul”… Yes!! They are lifting my spirit, over and over again. By the way, your eyes looks just like mine feel: slightly tearing up - in a great way. That was a delightful reaction! Thank you!
Love your reactions, correctly placed F bombs and always something technical I've not seen/heard yet. Looking forward to some shit being worked out....
Looks like they’re playing a festival in Guildford? Not sure I can spring for that sadly. If they play a concert venue in London I’m there for sure though!
Subscribed! This reaction was as joyful as this piece 😊 and what gets me is how I’m discovering new things every time I’m listening through someone else’s ears… I had this piece on repeat on my playlist, along with all the other DL stuff ;) Just loved how you picked up on the little sounds and sound effects, on all the technical stuff going on in there (honestly, to me this starts feeling like a masterpiece already after the first few seconds!), as well as reacting straight out of the middle of your heart… This piece, to me, is the perfect combination and delivery of flawless technical mastery (love the video visuals itself as well!) and emotional content… Judging from other comments, there is a lot of gospel going on in there. I always thought that the sound gets brighter with every chorus, and really starts brightening up towards the end and that climax, -not just modulation-wise but also sound scape-wise, - it always feels as though the heavens are opening up in the best possible way…. 😊 Your comments “this is pure joy”, “he’s plucking my soul”, “dude can sing”, lol! That drummer, Aron, to me he always sings, if that is the highest compliment to any drummer… yes, he adds colour to absolutely everything, whilst providing such drive - in the pocket, on fire whilst playing with so much engagement, subtlety and beauty. Henrik, he sings!, whilst being super percussive and virtuosic. And again, always the right thing at the right time, what can you say… Jonah? Forget it. The dude not only can sing (btw, he did all the of the backing vocals ;) but also harmonize and play those keys, holy….! All three seem to be on an equal footing when it comes to mastery of their skills and also to crafting those pieces together, which I think is always the case with Dirty Loops… (as an aside, someone recently said that Aron, the drummer, had a hand in writing that very rhythmical chorus melody…) This piece, to me, is like a happy tornado: it sucks you in and then spits you out at the other end, dazed, confused and totally happy 😃 Absolutely CAN’T wait for you to do “Work Shit Out”! 👍🔥👍
Lol! Love this comment! "Happy tornado" is a great description, (except now I'm picturing all the characters in The Wizard Of Oz being flung out of a Dirty Loops tornado, including the flying monkeys & the wicked witch), which of course would have drastically changed the whole plot. I'm taking this opportunity to thank you for your delightful comment as part of my ongoing effort to deter my frantic, happy brain from its apparent mission to drive me crazy with imagery that would have surely changed the course of cinematic history. Next up, Work Shit Out! Apropos, yes? 😉🤔😂
@@lavenderbluemama953 😂🤣😅 lol! Thank you 🙏 Our brains work in similar ways, by the sounds of it: everything is translated into imagery. Something wrong with the wiring in there? 😉 Well, I just can’t help it…. Btw, I always enjoy your comments, too ☺️👍
And for the second time dropping in to listen to this tune with you, Steve -after you’ve seen them live and captured some moments with Henrik on camera. W How is it that listening to this song time after time, it keeps getting better and better?? Apart from the phenomenal playing and musicianship of all three of them, the writing is just sooo good! Have you had a chance to listen to their earlier song ‘Where’s the Beat’ yet? As far as I know, it has been reacted to only once before on YT… I’m sure it would go down a treat ☺️ Link below. Cheers 👍

so good. came back and listened again after listening to todays. Wonderful. Love them so much. Enthusiasm, expertise and excitement - what more can we ask for? Great reaction.
ROFL… My list of things to do: learn to play like Henrik, learn to play like Aron, learn to play & sing like Jonah, learn how to style my hair like Henrik! 😂 Excellent reaction, thanks!
Absolute GREAT reaction my guy. Please put "Bitten By The Kitten" and "World On Fire" on your Dirty Loops list. I gotta give you a sub as well. Killer job.
I cannot wait to see you react to 'Work Shit Out!' next! The bass... THE BASS! The drums, keys, and vocals aren't bad either... Haaha... Okay, they're incredible as well!
Great reaction! Been following these guys since they posted their first video 10 years ago. Check out zildjian live with Larnell Lewis. Totally insane performance. He is the drummer on Lingus with Snarky Puppy. Cheers from Norway! BTW Jacob Collier might be worth checking out as well.
Every damn song is just locked, and their caliber, both individually and expressed within the band, are mind blowing. Along with bands like Polyphia, I'm beginning to think fusion jazz just hid for a couple of decades, waiting for us to mature into it...and then returned with stupid new monikers but amazing musicianship and stunning compositions.
Regarding your question. Please note that Jonah arrange and sing ALL vocals, also in the "choir". Here wonderful example in Jonah's solo album with his accapella song "Last farewell". Jonah sings all vocals, from bass to the "soprano". Headset on please: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iJ2S7Rp1sZg.html
Except, in this one, it was actually Aron who wrote the gospel parts, according to an interview with Henrik in BassMagazine. :D As I've understood it, they co-write almost everything, and noone does any type of writing exclusively.
@@lottawiklund8606Truly? Very interesting information👍🙂 I am getting more and more impressed of Aron. I understand Aron is also doing the video work for DL's videos. Very creative! Amazing that those 3 uniquely talented individuals found each other, in same school, no less...
@@LageB12 Yup. If you search for Henrik Linder Songified, you’ll find an interview from BassMagazine where he talks extensively about the creative processes of the Phoenix EP. Really interesting. And they’ve said, in multiple interviews, that they typically write in pairs, in any constellation, and different parts of a song can be written by different pairs. Really fascinating way of working, and they say that’s how they’ve been working since the start. 😊
@@lottawiklund8606 Simon Petrén, another musical marvel. I saw a video with him and another musician, where he explains the way he works (also had worked with Dirty Loops), and it was just so interesting! He worked/works a lot for K-Pop now, as did Jonah Nilsson, for a while.
Fantastic reaction. These guys are so talented. But don’t forget they work a lot. Henrick practises minimum 5 hours a day since a very long time. The talent with no effort not exist. Bye from france
@@SteveOGRock Oh my goodness......at least you guys can play! You're waaaayyy ahead of. most of us......but it's great to see your respect. It makes me like them more because of it.
In addition to the ones you mentioned, I would also like to see your reaction to the remaining videos from the Cory Wong / Dirty Loops collaboration: Turbo, and Ring of Saturn. Those were uploaded under Cory Wong’s account…
Hmm. That’s not beyond the realm of possibility, but looking at it again I think he’s just triggering some other rhythmic tones with his left hand. I do think the snare lead-in is done in post-production. But you’re right that in theory this could be triggered. You’d want to be rock solid with your timing though otherwise there might be a gap between the end of that sound and the hit of your snare if you lag which would be jarring.
