I'm 29, single and don't have $300 to pay a brake shop to change my rear brake pads and rotors, so I'm going to do it myself. Your video showed me what to expect and purchase, so I feel confident that I can do it. Thank you for making this video. I'll let you know how it all turns out.

Forgot to mention to open the cap on the brake fluid reservoir so the pressure doesn’t build up when you spin the piston back on the caliper. Good video though!

You watch these videos sometimes and the people suck at explaining the details. I mean, some folks are just the worst teachers. Yeah, they get an E for effort but, that's where it stops. I'm having a lot of trouble putting the caliper back on. It seems as thought the piston is back as far as it will go, since no matter how much I spin it, it doesn't seem to be making any more progress and It's back as far as yours seemed to be. However, when I put on an old brake pad on the front, since it is much thinner, I am able to fit the caliper onto the rotor. I have been working on this for hours. Any help??
@TheRykerDane
@TheRykerDane 9 лет назад
4thatdude1 the rear brakes are tricky because you have to spin them. But as long as you get the piston back in far enough to put the pads in they should go on, unless somehow you have the wrong brake pads. Make sure the piston is almost flush when it is spun in. I hope you get it.

@hpygolkyone
@hpygolkyone 9 лет назад
Ahhhh.......makes sense. Thanks for that little nugget. When you mentioned something about some instruction manuals suggesting using *needle nose pliers*, I thought to myself: WTF?!? Then I realized they were probably needed so that you could jam them into your skull and end it all after you realize that these rear brake cylinders don't just retract straight back with even pressure.............but that they screw back into position .......now that DOES make me wonder how they *unscrew* themselves to make contact with the brake pads when pressure is applied to the brake pedal. I will investigate this phenomenon further........as I have no life and am waiting delivery on my 2002 premium convertible to arrive from NJ.

Do you need to bleed the breaks doing this?
@humansvd3269
@humansvd3269 5 лет назад
It's easier to depress the piston in by opening the bleeder valve and let the brake fluid go through a funnel and a bottle. Otherwise you're pushing the fluid back into the brake lines.

@djoftha213

Yeah.. The breaks were done on mine before I recieved, about 14months ago. There's been a squeal? when I breaked, so I greased everything up. I decided to hit the break to compress the piston, th@ was not the best idea. I could not reset the piston for the longest time - bled the TOP Valve, & WA-LA! My last car (GP) only had 1 bleeder! 😅😩 Now I'm rollin' great!

Good video. It looks like you forgot to install the little butterfly plate thing that clips into the caliper casing. You point to it and even pick it up at 3:55, but you don’t install it. It is needed to allow the little wires coming off the pads to slide against smooth metal instead of the rough caliper casting.

I have a 03 mustang gt.. I just recently installed a SR performance cold air intake. Also, looking to buy a short throw shifter, possibly stage 2 cams to give it that classic muscle car sound.

oh cool! Good mods, Yep I am trying to decide on what to do. Probably get a cold intake too, and maybe a chip. I have to see what the best bang for the buck will be.

What's the name of tht tool u used to put in the brake caliper tried twisting it but didn't go in with big plyers
@TheRykerDane

Ruben Mendoza It's a brake tool kit that you need to rent from your auto part store. It can be done with a needle nose pliers but it is very hard.

TheRykerDane so what happens if you dont use this tool? I didnt know it turned when pushing in so i used a clamp and hammer and eventually got it to go in but I'm guessing I ruined the caliper?

The420Smokey420 Its just a lot easier with the tool. It will also take a lot of time and aggravation out of the job too. As long as its not damaged and you got it in, you should be good.

TheRykerDane Yea it went in fine, but I did have to unhook the brake line so I had to bleed it, which isnt hard. But now for some reason it smokes and gets really hot when i drive. I've taken it back off a few times and tried to resolve it, but it still does the same thing, and it cracked the pads from getting so hot.

The420Smokey420 Are you sure they are not rubbing? Is the caliper tight on the pads? Does the wheel spin freely when you put everything back together? I hope the piston is till working ok

Did you forget to put the metal clip in where brake pads spring glide on .will cause uneven wear if don't install
@TheRykerDane
